Sizing vFabric GemFire – VMware’s Java-based, Spring-Enabled, In-Memory Data Platform

Capacity planning in the enterprise is no easy task. In this post, we provide an overview for sizing VMware’s elastic, in-memory data management product,

vFabric GemFire and a link to an in-depth, technical article.

Setting the Stage for Memory Sizing

How to Leverage Existing Application Director Templates in the New Beta Release

vFabric Application Director has been getting quite a lot of attention recently. The success of our own internal IT project and how they

reduced application provisioning time by 90% and costs by 30% has spread and customers are trying it out. It’s been getting such good adoption that VMware decided to make it even easier for customers to use it by

including it into the newly expanded vCloud Suite, announced at VMworld earlier this month. Additionally, the Beta Program for Application Director has been underway for a couple months and customers are testing out the upgrade paths from their current deployment to their beta deployment.

VMware’s Serengeti – Virtualized Hadoop at Cloud-scale

Not long ago I covered the topic of

Big Data adoption in the enterprise. In it, I described how Serengeti enables enterprise to respond to common Hadoop implementation challenges resulting from the lack of usable enterprise-grade tools and the shortage of infrastructure deployment skills.

Helping People Sleep at Night: 5 Reasons to go for Continuous Deployment

Why do continuous provisioning? Some smart, successful companies with great engineering teams are certainly benefiting from it (see list further below), but what is it doing for them? And what can it do for you?

After talking to our customers at

VMworld about the possibilities of

vFabric Application Directorbeing

part of their vCloud infrastructure,  and last summer’s

explanation of continuous provisioning with Application Director and Jenkins CI Server, we decided to list some good reasons on why continuous deployment is worth pursuing.

ROBLOX: RabbitMQ, Hybrid Clouds, and 1 Billion Page Views/Month

Online video games have amazing software architectures, particularly when they support millions or billions of transactions.

One of the most interesting companies in this

growing industry is

ROBLOX.

If you haven’t heard of ROBLOX, they allow users develop their own games – creating players, 3D worlds, and objects from

first-person shooters to genres like military and sci-fi. They are able to share these games with others, and, of course, play them. The ROBLOX application also has a built in advertising system, social network, and virtual economy with currencies. According to their

website, they generate:

-                              Over one billion page views, 29 million in-game hours, and 10 million unique visitors per month.

-                              Players created 5.4 million games and spent over 250 million hours of game-play in 2011

Finally! View 5.1 now supports a newly patched vSphere 5.1

It’s been killing me!  As you’re no doubt aware, VMware vSphere 5.1 came out several weeks back and everyone’s been asking “where the heck is View support for this thing?”  It’s quite frustrating to have two great products and have to hold back.

Well, the wait is finally over!  Last night, the vSphere team released an important patch for ESXi:

vSphere 5.1 Auto Deploy Overview Videos

The VMware Technical Marketing team has produced a series of short videos to help introduce and show off many of the new features and capabilities of vSphere 5.1.  I’d like to call your attention to the Auto Deploy videos that I helped put together.  There are three separate videos.

Stop vs Pause with vSphere Replication

Something to be aware of with regards to vSphere Replication is how we handle stopping vs pausing replication.  With a pause we temporarily stop shipping differential data to the recovery site, but with a stop we completely stop the replication, remove it from the UI *and delete the recovery data*.

VMware vCloud Networking and Security 5.1 – Evaluation Videos

VMware vCloud Networking and Security is the leading software-defined networking and security solution that brings the flexibility and operational efficiency to the networks and network services in a data center.

In an earlier post

here, I described the main components of the solution and discussed the concept of logical networks using overlay technology and different network services that are offered as part of the vCloud Networking and Security solution. We have put together the following three evaluation videos that will provide more details on how to deploy and configure the solution in a typical environment.

vCloud Director 5.1.1 Released!

Today, VMware has released vCloud Director 5.1.1.  This minor release has a few important updates, including:

Update to vSphere vCenter Server, version 5.1.0A released

A new version of the vSphere vCenter Server has been released to address some of the issues encountered with various scenarios of deploying and operating the 5.1.0 version. This release is a full version and you can upgrade from 4.0-5.1GA to 5.1.0A

I’ve listed some information specific to the issues resolved however do check out the full release notes for install instructions and a list of known issues with workarounds.

VMware Go Blog: This Week in Patching – 10/26/2012

The highlight of this week was Adobe releasing a new security bulletin on Tuesday.  Adobe Security bulletin

APSB12-23 addresses six vulnerabilities that could lead to remote code execution and is rated critical.  Administrators should look at applying Adobe Shockwave Player 11.6.8.638 to their affected machines as soon as possible.

Office of the CTO Blogs: Our Elephant Grows Up – New Serengeti Capabilities for Hadoop

Since the

release of Serengeti, VMware has learned a tremendous amount from our customers about using virtualization as the platform for big data workloads and Hadoop. These customer conversations provided us with solid reasons to virtualize Hadoop and other big data workloads.

Office of the CTO Blogs: Towards an Elastic Elephant: Enabling Hadoop for the Cloud

In his joint presentation at Hadoop Summit 2012 titled

“Hadoop in Virtual Machines”, Richard McDougall talked about  the benefits and challenges of virtualizing Hadoop. In particular, he introduced the idea of separating Hadoop’s compute runtime from data storage  on virtual infrastructure and touched on why this architecture is both desirable and feasible in a cloud environment. In this blog post I hope to examine this topic a bit further and present some initial performance results.

VROOM!: Turbo-charge View Video Performance

Link Aggregation and VLAN Trunking with Brocade FastIron Switches

In this post, I’ll be sharing with you information on how to do link aggregation (with LACP) and VLAN trunking on a Brocade FastIron switch with both VMware vSphere as well as Open vSwitch (OVS).

Updating CA SSL Certificates in vSphere 5.1

Over the past few weeks I have been working behind the scenes with a team of people at VMware spread around the globe on the process to successfully change out the self-signed certificates in vSphere 5.1. With the introduction of Single Sign-On in vSphere 5.1 the process is somewhat more complicated than vSphere 5 (ok quite a lot more complicated). But now I’m able to bring you some of the solutions you’ve all been waiting for.

VMware View 3D Gaming Experience

For those of you who

follow me on twitter you may well have seen me tweeting about the View 3D Experience over the duration of both of this years VMworlds.

Myself and a colleague Tim Federwitz (

virtuallygeeky.com) had been tasked to showcase VMware's vSGA (Virtual Shared Graphics Acceleration) that will be released in the next release of VMware View at some point in H1 2013.

Distributed vSwitch Rollback

I’m a big fan of simple vSphere network configurations, one vSwitch with a small number of fast uplinks.  This has been my stance since ESX 3 and I think it’s still a good starting point for a network design.  I have had some concerns about the vNetwork Distributed switch (vDS) with it’s management through vCentre and the inherent ability to make a mistake that break the vDS for every ESXi server that uses the vDS.

Monitoring Storage I/O Control activity with new vSphere 5.1 counters

There was an interesting question posted recently around how you could monitor Storage I/O Control activity. Basically, how would one know if SIOC had kicked in and was actively throttling I/O queues? Well, in vSphere 5.1, there are some new performance counters that can help you with that.

Technical White Paper - Customizing vm-support in vSphere 5.0

The vm-support tool is re-written entirely in python framework from vSphere 5.0. This allows for a plugin type framework and users can run individual modules without the need to change the tool, it gathers and triggers commands to get diagnostic data across different components of the ESXi server.

Free VMware SRM Videos Available

There are some great Free VMware SRM videos available at VMware.

Those videos are provided free from the product page. Even if vSphere Replication (VR) has been introduced recently as a part of

VMware vSphere 5.1 Free of charge, to automate the failover and orchestrate the failover and failback you need SRM.

VMware Mirage Available for Download Now

VMware Mirage offers a unique solution for endpoint management and recovery that combines image centralization and local execution. The images of the endpoints are cloned into the datacenter to enable the benefits of centralized management and recovery while leaving cached copies of the image on each endpoint for local (and offline) execution thereby preserving an uncompromised user experience.

You can use this handy application to watch installation videos, access helpful demos, read product whitepapers, and benefit from expert advice. We ensure that you stay updated on the latest happenings at VMware and have access to useful information.

Clustering Support on vCloud Director and vCenter Databases

It was good to read recently on Duncan Epping’s blog Yellow Bricks that

database clustering support for vCloud Director is added in version 5.1. vCloud Director now supports both Oracle RAC and also Microsoft Cluster Services or Microsoft Failover Clustering for MS SQL Server for it’s database. This was previously not supported in vCloud Director 1.0 and 1.5. But what is the support situation for all of the other components when it comes to database clustering, including vCenter Server?

vCloud Director 5.1 & Storage DRS

Another feature which was introduced in vSphere 5.1 & vCloud Director 5.1 was the interoperability between vCloud Director & Storage DRS. Now vCloud Director can use datastore clusters for the placements of vCloud vApps, and allow Storage DRS do what it does best – choose the best datastore in the datastore cluster for the initial placement of the vApp, and then load balance the capacity and performance of the datastores through the use of Storage vMotion.

How to file a Support Request in My VMware

Hey, just a very quick post here to let you know that the My VMware

portal was updated this past weekend. As a result, the process for filing a support request in My VMware has changed ever so slightly. VMware Knowledge Base article Filing a Support Request in My VMware (2006985)

has been updated to reflect these changes.

Mac users cannot upload files through the My VMware portal

We have recently been made aware of an issue that may impact our customers’ ability to  upload files through the My VMware portal.

A recent Mac OS release has removed the Java plug-in. The Java plug-in is a requirement to upload files on the My VMware portal. Apple decided to remove the Java plug-in for Mac OS 10.7 and later, as explained in their KB article,

About Java for OS X 2012-006 and here. Engadget also covers the story:

Apple says no Java for you, removes plugin from browsers on OS X 10.7 and up.

Collecting diagnostic information from vCenter Server 5.1

We have recently updated KB article:

Collecting diagnostic information for VMware vCenter Server (1011641) with vCenter Server 5.1 information, says

Joel Yaross, Technical Support Engineer in our Broomfield Colorado office.

EPP: Enrollment, Overview, and Fund Management

VMware EPP enables customers to purchase software licenses in volume easily, and to benefit from cost savings in a flexible way. We have created three short videos, shown below, to introduce you to EPP and show you how to get started with it.

Implementing CA signed SSL certificates with vSphere 5.1

One of the most common things we see in VMware Global Support Services (GSS), regardless of product, version, or customer, is the need to implement

custom certificates. This could be for a number of reasons:

From the editors Virtual Desk
Hi everyone, well we are getting closer to vForum 2012 in Sydney and things are getting exciting. For starters the official agenda has been published this week. I am also confirmed to do a session this year and will be presenting on the first day after lunch. I will publish more details when I get them and I hope that many of you will attend not only vForum but my session.

It would also be great to meet anyone who is going to vForum who get’s the newsletter. I will supply details on my whereabouts for the event closer to the time as I know them.

I have had a lot of conversations this past week on certification and with the new VMware certification tracks that were announced at VMworld this seems to have gathered a lot of momentum and interest. I am also very keen on getting more certifications and the 2 most intersting to me right now are the VCAP-DCD and VCP-ITAAS. Because of this I will include more on these two certs in coming newsletters.

Spring Data release train arrived

Access Java Spring Data data access NOSQL

It's a pleasure to announce that we have just released the GA versions of a variety of Spring Data modules. With this release we continue to manifest the commitment of SpringSource to provide Java developers with tools to work with state-of-the-art persistence technologies. In this blog post I'd like to give you detailed insight into Read more...

Escape JEE Bloat: Implement a Lightweight App Server Architecture

If you follow this blog, you know we keep hearing people talk about simplicity when discussing app servers and architectures. We certainly heard this at

JavaOne and also at

VMworld, but it’s been popular for a

while.

Understanding the Difference between Spring Insight Developer & Insight Operations

Every developer knows Byte Code Instrumentation (BCI) is useful. It automates how you instrument your code, and let’s you see exactly how data is being transferred and manipulated within your application. The level of detail is essential to writing and debugging good code.

Deploying a Cassandra Cluster with Application Director

While

vFabric Application Director supports a variety of products out of the box (mostly

vFabric) and a growing number of products on the

Cloud Application Management MarketplaceBETA (like

Puppet Integration), it is easy to extend Application Director to support additional applications. Let’s take a look at how to use Application Director with Apache’s open source database,

Cassandra. If you are new to Application Director, you might check out this

5-minute explanation. Otherwise, this post will show you how to automate the provisioning and set-up of a Cassandra cluster with Application Director in two main steps: 1) creating the catalog service and 2) defining a blueprint. Then, we will look at an example.

vFabric Suite 5.2 Released

vFabric Suite 5.2 has been released and is now available for VMware customers to

download and deploy. Considered a minor release, this update fulfills VMware’s desire to update the 13 different application components that comprise the suite every six months.  The improvements across the products for this version focus on improving standardization and consistency across products, an important maintenance effort as several of the products are relatively new to the vFabric product portfolio. Customers will universally benefit from standardization across products on five fronts:

Understanding App Delivery Controllers in Hybrid Clouds

Many call

Application Delivery Controllers (ADC) the next generation of load balancers.  Same as load balancers, they sit in front of web servers. In addition to providing the balancing services, they now help improve scale, availability, fault tolerance, security, and routing. But, not all ADCs are delivered as pure software solutions, designed for cloud-based and virtualized deployments, or work in hybrid cloud environments—items which are becoming mainstream requirements for the

Software Defined Datacenter (SDDC) that VMware sees as the future of cloud computing.

vFabric VMworld Sessions available On Demand

For anyone that attended VMworld 2012, you can access

content for all VMware sessions here.

If you did not attend, you can

purchase a subscription to access the content online. Content from all previous years is free for all community members along with the 2012 General Session Keynotes.

Using VMware Mirage in Remote and Branch Offices

Desktop management at remote and branch offices presents a significant challenge to IT departments. The challenge is magnified not just because of how IT must accomplish this feat, but also how they must accomplish it within a reasonable cost structure, while operating centrally or remotely, but with as little disruption to their end user base as possible. This is where the

VMware Branch Office Desktop and specifically one significant component of this solution-

VMware Mirage- come in.

IBM and VMware Validate New Desktop Architecture Optimized to Deliver Desktops as a Managed Service to Branch Offices

Following the launch of the

VMware Rapid Desktop Program at VMworld in San Francisco, the global VMware and IBM teams committed to not only delivering a validated solution based on the Branch Office Desktop, but also creating and certifying an IBM Rapid Desktop appliance based on the

IBM System x and

IBM Flex Systems hardware families.

Better Management of End-User Technology for Remote and Branch Offices

When it comes to managing IT in branch offices, it’s not uncommon for organizations to look at centralization. Why? Because it simply isn’t efficient to maintain local IT staff and resources in each location, especially when the work tasks being supported in each location are near-identical.  Not only is the inefficiency of replicated and distributed IT management an unnecessary resource drain, it can expose the organization to greater risks of lost productivity and revenues by creating many more points of vulnerability.

Breaking the Shackles of Legacy Infrastructure in the Branch Office

Today’s distributed businesses rely extensively on branch offices for selling to, servicing and satisfying new and existing customers. Yet far too many of these remote locations remain hamstrung by legacy infrastructure, ultimately impacting the ability of the business to grow revenue and profits.

Making the Business Case for VDI for Small to Mid-Sized Organizations

In the last survey we posted with Spiceworks on the Trends around Desktop Virtualization for Small and Mid-sized Organizations for SMBs (published May 2012)- we found that over 60% of small to mid-sized businesses with up to a 1000 employees were planning to roll out or evaluate VDI this year.

vSphere Data Protection (VDP) and vSphere Replication (VR) Interoperability

We have been getting a fair number of questions regarding interoperability of vSphere Data Protection (VDP) and vSphere Replication (VR) both of which are included with vSphere 5.1 (Essentials Plus and higher). I spent some time in my lab with these questions and decided to focus on the two most common questions:

-                              Do VDP and VR interfere with each other?

-                              Can I use VR to replicate VDP to another site?

vSphere 5.1 – VDS Feature Evaluation Videos

As you start looking at the new features of vSPhere 5.1 release, you will find substantial improvements to the vSphere Distributed Switch (VDS). In the earlier post

here, I briefly talked about the new VDS features and also provided link to the

white paper.

To help you evaluate some of the key features of the VDS we have put together following videos:

Office of the CTO Blogs: VMware at the OpenStack Summit

It has been a very busy week at the OpenStack Summit. Unfortunately, I am not there but Quantum is.

What is Quantum?

Quantum is the networking-as-a-service capability and most talked about aspect to OpenStack’s Folsom release. Quantum has become a game-changer when it comes to enabling advanced networking in OpenStack environments, and the Nicira team at VMware has been leading the charge both in open source Quantum development and in deploying Quantum in production OpenStack environments.

VMware Go Blog: vSphere Essentials + VMware Go Pro = Worry-Free IT Management for SMBs

In its early days, virtualization was seen as a luxury for IT departments. Sure, it would save you considerable money on hardware and utility costs and improve overall performance for your IT infrastructure—but there was also a significant upfront cost and technical training required to get it up and running. At that point, it was essentially limited to the IT 1%-ers (come on, it’s election season – grant us that one terrible analogy…).

Spotted a RUN DRS t-shirt at VMworld and wondering where to buy them?

I had so many people ask about these RUN DRS shirts I had made in the last weeks… Unfortunately it was a limited print so I cannot offer them, and to be honest I don’t really want to sell them either. Frank created the design and I asked Frank if it would be okay to share it so that everyone who wants one can get it printed themselves.

vSphere HA fail-over in action – aka reading the log files

I had a discussion with

Benjamin Ulsamer at VMworld and he had a question about the state of a host when both the management network and storage network was isolated. My answer was that in that case the host will be reported as “dead” as there is no “network heartbeat” and no “datastore heartbeat”. (more info about

heartbeating here) Funny thing is when you look at the log files you do see isolated instead of dead. Why is that? Before we answer it lets go through the log files and paint the picture:

Database clustering support for vCloud Director added in version 5.1!

Those who have been architecting vCloud Director environments from the early days know that this has always been a pain point. I personally have had many discussions with product management and engineering to get support for database clustering like Oracle RAC or Microsoft clustering services for MS SQL. Unfortunately neither 1.0 and 1.5 supported it. So the big questions always was, when will database clustering support for vCloud Director be added?

New esxcli namespaces (incl. SMART disk monitoring)

With ESXi 5.1 there were several enhancements to the esxcli command that you can use in an ESXi shell, but also remotely, to get and set system configuration parameters. You can now e.g. configure VMkernel IPv4 and IPv6 network routes (esxcli network ip route ...) configure SNMP (esxcli system snmp ...) enter maintenance mode (esxcli system maintenanceMode) and shutdown/reboot the host (esxcli

The status of SMP Fault Tolerance

VMware FT (Fault Tolerance) has been around for a while an enables you to protect a VM in a way that allows for a seamless non-disruptive fail over to a copy of it running on another host. The execution of the primary and the secondary copy of an FT-protected VM is synchronized through the vLockstep protocol by sending all input data over a dedicated FT logging link to the host that runs the

Enabling vSphere Distributed Switch Health Check in the vSphere Web Client

The network configuration for the vSphere infrastructure is a two-step process, whereby users must configure the physical network switches to which the vSphere host is connected and then configure the VDS. There are key network parameters, such as VLAN, network adapter teaming, and MTU, that should be configured properly on physical and virtual switches.

Strange DRS behavior during vSphere 5.1 upgrade

This week I upgraded a customer running vSphere 4.0 Update 1 to vSphere 5.1 when discovering a strange DRS behavior. My upgrade path was to first install a fresh vCenter 5.1 and then move the ESX 4.0 hosts into vCenter 5.1. Next step was to put the first host into maintenance mode, shutdown, remove from cluster, perform a fresh install with ESXi 5.1 and then add it to the cluster.

After the first host was installed with ESXi 5.1 and added to the cluster, I suddenly saw DRS moving virtual machines to that first host. Not just a few but a lot of VMs. The host got loaded to 96% and then DRS stopped migrating VMs.

How-to increase the default timeout value of vSphere Web Client

The vSphere Web Client will become the main client for managing the VMware vSphere Infrastructures. There is a default timeout value which is 30 min, but it’s configurable. Think twice if you have a real reason, in production environment, to change this value.

vCloud Director 5.1 & Storage Profiles

In my 10 part series of posts on the new vSphere 5.1 Storage Features, I called out in part 3 that there was now even greater interoperability between features like Profile Driven Storage and

vCloud Director. The purpose of this blog is to highlight this particular interoperability in even more detail.

Link Aggregation and LACP with Open vSwitch

In this post, I’m going to show you how to use link aggregation (via the Link Aggregation Control Protocol, or LACP) with Open vSwitch (OVS). First, though, let’s cover some basics.

In the virtualization space, it’s extremely common to want to use multiple physical network connections in your hypervisor hosts to support guest (virtual machine) traffic. The problem is that modern-day networking is—for now—largely constrained by the presence of Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), which limits the use of multiple connections between network devices (especially switches). Since most hypervisors have some form of virtual switch to support guest traffic, and since users don’t want to be constrained by STP the hypervisors have had to find workarounds.

5 Scenarios and Best Practices for Running Multiple Instances of Tomcat or tc Server

With multiple Tomcat instances, each runs in its own JVM, with its own configuration, and can be started or stopped independently, while still running against the same core binary. There are a variety of reasons to do this in practice. For example:

5 Trends Driving Change in App Architectures

From mainframe to client-server to web-based to cloud-oriented, application architectures have evolved.  Now, the cloud services market will be

over $100B in 2012 (source

Gartner) and IaaS is set to grow 45.4% – extremely fast in a tough world economy. This growth means companies are prioritizing cloud services and evolving application architectures very quickly. From the viewpoint of our customers, we see five key themes driving change in IT application architectures:

Follow the Sun in Hyperic HQ Enterprise

For those sysadmins who manage 24/7/365, mission-critical systems, or global operations, a “follow-the-sun” model is part of the job.  But when you are NOT on duty, you would prefer not to receive any notifications.  So, an important function of alerts is the ability to alert different people depending on the schedule of who is on duty. Schedule-based alerts  are useful even in during a single shift as you can plan coverage for lunches, regular meetings or temporarily disable alerts to allow focused time to work on special projects.

New VSPP Management Bundle Provides Revenue Opportunities for vCloud Service Providers

Here at VMworld in Barcelona, the theme for the opening day is all about management. We’re focusing on how customers can deploy more automation capabilities to advance further down the path towards the

software-defined datacenter, a vision that was articulated at VMworld San Francisco a few weeks ago.

Announcing vCloud Connector 2.0 – One Network, One Catalog, One Cloud

Today, VMware introduced vCloud Connector 2.0, the latest version of our tool for reliably and efficiently transferring virtual machines and data between vClouds. VMware’s vCloud platform is unique in that deploying applications and data to any cloud is a core capability. Rather than building an application so it can run in just one cloud, your application can run without changes in any vCloud, whether your own, or from one of our

160+ vCloud service providers.

Cisco and VMware Team Up to Offer New Bundle to Support Branch Office Workers

Back in September-Cisco created quite a bit of buzz with the announcement of their new Cisco UCS-E series Server in the Branch-in-a-Box with VMware View . And today at VMWorld Barcelona, they have teamed up with VMware to offer a new bundle through the channel designed to make it easier than ever to buy and deploy this new all-in-one solution.

Memory Performance Counters – An Evolved Look at Memory Management

vSphere memory management has evolved over the years taking advantage of new technologies and techniques like using large memory pages, compressing memory, and using solid state devices (SSDs) for swap caching. This evolution has changed the way we need to look at memory usage and memory over-commitment in vSphere virtualized environments. To understand memory management and usage in vSphere we need to understand the metrics available to us, what they mean, and how to use them.

When monitoring performance, just knowing what performance metrics are available and what they measure is half the battle. A good place to see the performance metrics available in vSphere and their definition is in the

vSphere SDK documentation for the PerformanceManager object.

VMware Accelerate: Aligning our Cloud Vision to Customer Strategies

In our experience, enterprise customers the VMware Accelerate team works with are looking to a number of specific cloud-related initiatives to address these business and IT objectives and strategies, including how to:

-                              Drive to a more virtualized data center infrastructure

-                              Start a private cloud

-                              Address the increasing number of new client devices within the stakeholder community

Determine how to develop applications using a more modern, cloud and mobility capable approach

VMware Accelerate: IaaS, then PaaS, then SaaS, then… We’ll See

It‘s been a few years now since companies started to implement and use cloud computing. It’s been an interesting journey so far that is probably only at the beginning of what cloud computing can really mean to our lives, to the way we interact with each other, to the technology that will enable the creation and diffusion of applications and services.

VMware for Small-Medium Business Blog: Free Training Videos: Site Recovery Manager – with Mike Laverick

The one thing that always resonates in the SMB space is that special four letter word – the word

FREE. As you may (not) know, vSphere Replication is now included in the vSphere package. This kind of makes sense given the name “vSphere Replication,” it was never called “Site Recovery Manager Replication.” VR is great solution for the SMB customer because it comes baked into the platform. It literally takes minutes to download the appliance, register it with your vCenter and you’re away. It’s soooo much easier than the previous release which required a separate “management” appliance along side the VR appliance that did the donkey work of replicating the blocks around. In case you don’t, VR ships with so simple options to recover a VM from one.

The Console: ¡Viva Cloud Management!

VMworld Europe

kicked off today in Barcelona

with approximately 8,000 attendees. My keynote this morning

focused on the software-defined datacenter and our updated cloud management portfolio

. This management offering includes enhancements to the management products in the recently released VMware vCloud Suite

, and stand alone tools, plus the newest member of our cloud management solution: vCloud Automation Center.

Office of the CTO Blogs: Heterogeneous Cloud Management at VMworld Europe

In a

recent blog post, Steve Herrod outlined how VMware products are embracing support for heterogeneous environments. VMware’s Enterprise Management products are no exception. Heterogeneity is important because while many of our customers have chosen a VMware-first policy, the reality is that their environments may not be completely vSphere: there are pockets of physical servers that have yet to be virtualized, developers run around IT’s back and go straight to Amazon Web Services (AWS) to test their latest changes, or the company makes an acquisition whose datacenters don’t run vSphere. So any management solution must be able to support heterogeneous environments. This is exactly what we’ve designed our Enterprise Management products to do.

Office of the CTO Blogs: Application Management in a Software-Defined Datacenter

In a

recent blog by my colleague Kit Colbert, he outlined a number of implications that a transition from traditional systems to a cloud environment have on management. Traditionally dedicated infrastructure tied to specific applications lead to tightly integrated vertical silos and significant complexity in management tooling. With the move to software-defined datacenters these silos are turned on their side, applications are “unlocked” from their dedicated infrastructure and an opportunity to reap significant operational benefits is created.

Office of the CTO Blogs: Software-Defined Datacenters, Clouds & PuppetConf 2012

Just over a week ago I had the pleasure of speaking at

PuppetConf 2012.  PuppetConf is a great conference focused, somewhat unsurprisingly, around

Puppet, a declarative, model driven framework for automating systems and IT management.  The conference brings together a community of pretty hard core systems admins from the

DevOps world and beyond.  Automated management is clearly a key ingredient in building

software-defined datacenters and Clouds, and something that we, at VMware, have more than a passing interest in.

VMworld 2012 Barcelona – My Top 3 picks

VMworld Barcelona is a history now.

Mattias Sundling, a fellow vExpert from vKernel has asked me about which 3 was my top picks during VMworld in Barcelona. Difficult tasks, there were so many cool technologies and great atmosphere.

vCloud Connector 5.1 – What’s new?

vCloud Connector 5.1

which has been announced during VMworld 2012 in Barcelona

, brings new features and new user interface. This release of vCloud Connector brings also 2 versions – Free Basic Edition

, and Advanced Edition

(included in the vCloud Suites).

Some ESXi CLI Commands

Having not used the ESXi command line as often as I should, I logged in and found myself in an unfamiliar place. My objective was to enter maintenance mode, reboot the host, and exit maintenance mode.

VSA Cluster Service Considerations

Some changes have been made to the VSA Cluster Service in version 5.1. Previously, the VSA Cluster Service was installed on the vCenter Server – there was no way to decouple it. However in VSA 5.1, the VSA Cluster Service is a stand-alone entity. It can still be deployed on the vCenter server, but it can also be deployed outside of it.

VMware Mirage – VMworld Barcelona – Demo video

I passed by the VMware stand during my stay at VMworld Barcelona 2012, and I was able to record a demo of product called

VMware Mirage. A product that I have already wrote about in my article

here (see the architecture pic and video).

vCenter Operation Management Suite 5.6 – What’s new

vCenter Operation Management Suite 5.6 announced

The update or vCOPs was just announced during

VMworld Barcelona 2012. It’ one of the news which has been announced by Steve Herrod. Another news which I blogged about is the new release for vCloud Connector, and also vCloud Automation Center.

VMware Mobile Knowledge Portal–iPad App

Do you find it hard to locate the latest VMware documentation ? Wouldn’t it be great if there was an iPad where the documentation and videos could be synchronized to your iPad enabling you to take it with you and learn on the train or wherever you need it.  Want no more !

The VMware Mobile Knowledge Portal is now available and ready to download from the app store here:

Some questions about Stretched Clusters with regards to power outages

Today I received an email about the vSphere Metro Storage Cluster paper I wrote, or better said about stretched clusters in general. I figured I would answer the questions in a blog post so that everyone can chip in / read etc. So lets show the environment first so that the questions are clear. vCloud Automation Center Introduced by VMware

vCloud Automation Center – leverages vCD to provision applications to virtual datacenters.

VMware vCloud 5.1 Networking for dummies part 3

I hope you enjoyed

part 1 and

part 2 of my VMware vCloud networking series. At least I learned a lot from writing these posts and I have now much more confidence in being able to deploy a vCloud environment. In this part I’m going to explain how to publish a Web Site  from a vApp to the outside world (my home network) and since it would also be nice to manage that server remotely I would like a RDP connection to that Windows 2012 Server.

VMware vCloud 5.1 Networking for dummies part 2

In the first part I wrote on “

VMware vCloud 5.1 Networking for dummies” I showed an easy way to setup and attach VMs to an organizational network and give them access to the external network and the internet. In this second part I will show you how to connect VMs to a vApp network and protect them from the organizational network, but make it possible for them to access the external network.

After Microsoft Security Advisory update, connection to vCenter Server 4.0.x web services may fail

Base Management alert Microsoft Security

Earlier today, Microsoft released this security advisory:

Microsoft Security Advisory: Update for minimum certificate key length

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2661254

After applying the Microsoft Security Advisory:

-                              Connections to secure http (https://) web services such as the Managed Object Browser (https://vcserver/mob) and to WebAccess (https://<vcserver>/ui) fail if the vCenter Server certificate is 512 bit

-                              Redirection of communication from http to https fails and communication proceeds over the http connection

The patch effectively disables communication with any security certificate which is less than 1024 bits long. With vCenter 4.0.x we use 512 bit certificates by default and as such we see connections to https Web Services fail.

For further information, updates, and resolution to this issue, refer to KB article: After installation of Microsoft Security Advisory update (KB2661254), connection to vCenter Server 4.0.x web services may fail (2037082)

Embedding Socialcast into Salesforce via a Visualforce page

If you’ve ever done any development work in Salesforce.com you’ve probably come across Visualforce. Visualforce is a framework that allows developers to build sophisticated, custom user interfaces that can be hosted natively on the Force.com platform. The Visualforce framework includes a tag-based markup language, similar to HTML.

VMware vSphere Data Protection 5.1 – integrated email notification system

VMware vSphere Data Protection 5.1 has an integrated email notification system which, once configured, may send server error and status messages to a server that is accessible to EMC, the parent company of VMware and collaborator on VDP 5.1. Some customers may consider this information to be sensitive.

All messages received have been disposed of. Future messages received from this notification system will be immediately deleted.

This KB

provides a script to disable the notification function. Customers are requested to follow the steps outlined in the KB.

October 2, 2012 Update

VMware has released a new version of vSphere Data Protection 5.1 in which the notification function is permanently disabled. Customers should upgrade to this version immediately, see the KB

Last day of week-1 for Business Process Desktop bootcamp

In today’s session, technical experts from EMC Avamar team present a deep-dive storage focused session for backup & restore of desktop infrastructure with View Business Process Desktop. Join us for the session here:

http://communities.vmware.com/community/vmtn/desktop/view/bpdbootcamp/video_5

Here is a quick summary of the week-1 sessions:

Contact Centers Get a Boost with Cisco VXI 2.6 and VMware View

Desktop EUC Strategy View Business Process Desktop

It may be no surprise to you that over 30% of customers dealing with contact centers experience poor customer service (Forrester). Many of us have had to deal with the challenges of legacy call centers with long wait times, dropped calls and an endless tirade of prompts before we actually get to a live agent.

Cisco as the industry leader in innovative call center solutions, is transforming the agent desktop to deliver greater efficiency, agility and customer service. Cisco and VMware are partnering to take the agent desktop into the age of the unified workspace.

New VMware View Clients Simplify End User Setup

VMware recently updated the full set of VMware View Clients: Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS and Android, all available

here. New in the latest release of all VMware View clients (5.2 for Windows and 1.6 for all other clients) is support for launching the VMware View client from a URI link.

At the time of install, the View client associated itself with the URI scheme name “vmware-view://.” When a user clicks a vmware-view link, the user’s system will launch the VMware View Client. Administrators can specify many VMware View Client settings in the URI link.

Introducing the VIB Author Fling

I’m very excited to announce the new

vibauthor fling.  This fling is hot off the press and provides the capability to create custom vSphere Installation Bundles (VIBs).  Prior to this fling the VIB authoring tools were only available to VMware partners, this fling now extends this capability to everyone.

There are a couple of use cases for creating custom VIBs.  For example, if you are using Auto Deploy and you need to add a custom firewall rule to your host, or you need to make a configuration change that can’t be made using Host Profiles.

X-Large Edge Gateways and vCD

One of the outstanding enhancements provided in the vCloud Director 5.1 release was the ability to select between two different deployment models of the Edge Gateway.  It is now possible for you to deploy the Edge Gateway in a Compact or Full model, with the difference between the two being the performance they provide and the amount of resources they utilize.

Interesting Storage Stuff at VMworld 2012 Barcelona

Last month, I put together a short article on what I thought would be interesting to check out from a VMworld 2012 San Francisco perspective. On the run up to VMworld 2012 Barcelona, I thought I would do a similar post.

Disclaimer – Once again, the vSphere storage blog has to remain storage vendor neutral to retain any credibility. VMware doesn’t favour any one storage partner over another. I’m not personally endorsing any of these vendor’s products either. What I’m posting here are just a few vendors/products that are interesting to me from a storage perspective.

Have you seen the VSA 5.1 Evaluation Videos yet?

For those of you interested in a low cost shared storage solution, VMware now have a vSphere Storage Appliance (VSA). The initial release (1.0) came out last year. This year, we announced version 5.1 with a bunch of new features.

To get you started on your evaluation of the VSA 5.1, a number of evaluation videos were put together. These videos are now available on youtube. The first evaluation video, which covers the VSA 5.1 installation, is here:

Should I use das.failuredetectiontime or das.config.fdm.isolationPolicyDelaySec

Today I received a question around the use of das.failuredetectiontime and das.config.fdm.isolationPolicyDelaySec. Should you be using these advanced settings?

Short answer: no.

“vMotion without shared storage” API

My colleague

Frank Denneman recently asked me whether there was a new

vSphere API for the

new enhancement made to vMotion in vSphere 5.1, which would allow you to migrate a live running virtual machine without the need of shared storage. The simple answer is no, the new enhancement to vMotion operation has been integrated into the existing Storage vMotion API call which is the RelocateVM_Task method.

VMware Accelerate: Eight Simple Rules for Protecting My Corporate Data Assets

When my daughter was eight, she promised that she wouldn’t date boys until she was 30.  Now my daughter is 15, and it turns out that I didn’t have as much time as I’d hoped.  If you are a parent, you can probably appreciate how I feel.  We all want our children to be safe and there is no safer place for them to be than at home.  But the reality is that our children have to venture out into the real world if they are to ever grow into productive members of society.

Office of the CTO Blogs: Delivering Desktops as a Service (DaaS)

There is a lot of misinformation and FUD surrounding DaaS in the marketplace today. Some are the result of loose interpretation of licensing restrictions while others are more self-serving that the only DaaS achievable today comes in a form that a vendor has been selling for years and has decided to now attach the term ‘DaaS’ to describe it. We’ve heard all these claims and expect to hear more as the market continues to mature

We intend to dispel these myths and back it up by showing recent innovations that are making true-DaaS a reality.

VMware for Small-Medium Business Blog: Mike Laverick’s IT Hero Podcast: Virtualizing Desktops & Apps with Stu McHugh

I first met Stuart McHugh (Stu to his friends) at the London VMware User Group when I was still active on the steering committee. He’s been on my podcast the “chinwag” and he’s the co-presenter of our monthly “vNews”. In fact it was Stu’s encouragement that fired me up to start the vNews podcast after an extended sabbatical. So let that be a warning to everyone out there, if you come at me with a great idea – expect to step up to the plate and join me!  I really enjoyed chatting with Stu. As I increasingly move away from the front-line aspects of delivering systems to business, I think its ever more important to keep in touch with the “real world”. You see at times I feel I work in a media bubble of my own creation – and its important to prick that bubble at every opportunity to keep yourself grounded with what customers actually thinking, and actually implementing.

vCO Team: Create your own vCloud Download lossless vApp Template workflow in less than 5 minutes

vCloud Director 5.1 has some new features, one of them allows to keep vApp Templates information that are by default discarded. My colleague William Lam covers this very well in this

article. If you think this would be good to have this functionality as a workflow then you can have it in about 5 minutes with creating it on your own.

Office of the CTO Blogs: Big Data and Virtual Hadoop at VMworld 2012

VMworld 2012

has come and gone, and VMworld Europe is on the horizon. We had several big data oriented sessions this year, and saw a significant rise in the activity in this important area.

During the keynote, we demo’ed the next version of Serengeti

, which allows Hadoop to be elastically scaled on a virtual platform. We showed a scenario of mixed workloads on the same platform, allowing time-based shifts in the amount of resources assigned to Hadoop and other workloads. You can see the highlights from the keynote here

, and additional information on compute/data separation in an up coming blog.

Office of the CTO Blogs: HPC Performance in the Cloud: Status and Future Prospects

I spoke last week at

ISC Cloud 2012 in Mannheim, Germany about the performance of HPC applications in the cloud, citing results from several studies. I have summarized the talk below and my PDF slide deck is available

here. For full details of ISC Cloud 2012, I recommend the coverage at

HPC in the Cloud.

I gave my talk to share some specific data about HPC performance in virtual environments, but I first described what new capabilities can be gained by virtualizing an HPC environment. I felt this was necessary because in HPC discussions it is often the case that virtualization is only discussed in a negative context: how much performance is it going to cost me? That’s a legitimate question, but it is also important to understand what additional capabilities might be gained in return to do a proper cost-benefit analysis.

VCP-IaaS Exam Experiences

I just did the VCP-IaaS exam one hour ago, and wanted to share my experience right away while it is fresh in memory. I passed with a score of 409 (need 300 to pass). The Exam is 90 minute long, but I got 120 minutes because English is not my native language. During the time you have to answer 85 questions. To pass the exam you will definitely need hands on with the product. A lot of questions will ask you where in the vCloud GUI you perform certain administrative tasks. So lesson one: Know the interface. Most questions will be network related. You need to know your vCloud network by heart. External, Internal, Routed, vShield, NAT etc. need to be stuff you really know. You will also get a few questions in Chargeback. I would suggest especially looking into what default roles is present in Chargeback and what privileges they have. My best advice is to sit the vCloud, Install, Configure, Manage class. This class will be excellent for the exam.

To sum it up. Take the vCloud 4 day training class, get hands on with the product and read thoroughly on the vCloud such as pVDC, oVDC, vShield, External network etc.

The VMware Reference Architecture for Stateless Virtual Desktops on Local Solid-State Storage with VMware View 5

This document

provides the reference architecture for Stateless Virtual Desktops with VMware View 5 on local solid-state storage. A stateless desktop architecture is ideally suited for standard desktop environments where the desktop image is consistent from user to user; however with proper application design can be used in broad use cases. VMware View 5 allows specific placement of different types of disks to be re-directed, even to local storage, the I/O requirements on shared storage can be drastically reduced. The VMware View 5 Reference  Architecture for Stateless Virtual Desktops involves high-performing, solid-state drives within a physical host to offload the majority of desktop virtualization IOPS needed, while providing a stateless desktop virtualization design for planned and unplanned downtime.

Limit the amount of eggs in a single basket through vSphere 5.1 DRS

A while back I had discussion with someone and he asked me if it was possible to limit the amount of eggs in a single basket, in other words limit the amount of VMs per host. The reason this customer wanted to do this was to limit the impact of a failure. They had roughly 1500 VMs in their cluster and some hosts carried 50 VMs while other had 20 or 80. This is the nature of DRS though and totally expected.

VMware View Naming Pattern

Administrators can provision the desktops in an automated pool by manually specifying a list of desktop names or by providing a naming pattern and the number of desktops they want in the pool. These two approaches offer different advantages.

If you name desktops by specifying a list, you can use your company’s naming scheme, and you can associate each desktop name with a user. If you provide a naming pattern, View Manager can dynamically create and assign desktops as users need them.

DRS Best Practices, Advanced Concepts and Future Directions

VMware DRS is one of the best features of VMware vSphere. It gives you the possibility to automate the management of resources in virtual environments. There is quite a few parameters which one must take into consideration, but there is quite a lot when DRS can help you out. Like the automatic initial placement of VMs and load-balancing, depending on the load of a host, cpu utilization and ressource pools.

Configuring VXLAN…

Yesterday I got an email about configuring VXLAN. I was in the middle of re-doing my lab so I figured this would be a nice exercise. First I downloaded vShield Manager and migrated from regular virtual switches to a Distributed Switch environment. I am not going to go in to any depth around how to do this, this is fairly straight forward. Just right click the Distributed Switch and select “Add and Manage Hosts” and follow the steps. If you wondering what the use-case for VXLAN would be I recommend

reading Massimo’s post.

VMware vCloud 5.1 Networking for dummies

In April of this year I finally was able to take the “

VMware vCloud: Deploy and Manage the VMware Cloud“ course lead by

Mr. Eric Sloof himself. The training was based on vCloud Director 1.5 and I learned quite a lot and really thought I had this vCloud networking thing in my fingers. The exercises in class where easy to complete and made sense to me. Ok, Ok, I do admit I was sometimes struggling with the fact that I knew what I wanted to configure but didn’t always know where to configure it. Like creating a NAT rule to a static IP or opening some firewall ports. But in the end, it all worked. At home I didn’t get the time to play with vCloud and when I finally did get time, vCloud Director 5.1 was just released.

VXLAN requirements

When I was writing my “

Configuring VXLAN” post I was trying to dig up some details around VXLAN requirements and recommendations to run a full “VMware” implementation. Unfortunately I couldn’t find much, or at least not a single place with all the details. I figured I would gather all I can find and throw it in to a single post to make it easier for everyone.

Making a vCloud multi VM vApp template

As you’ve read by now I’m making my first steps into vCloud Director 5.1 and stumble across some simple things. One of these is the quest on how to create a multi VM vApp template. Had been searching for this and was afraid it wasn’t even possible, but luckily it is possible, you just have to look where you don’t expect it to be

From the editors Virtual Desk
Hi everyone, well I decided to take a break from the newsletter last week due to our end of quarter activities and ensuring that I could complete my obligations. As a result of course this weeks newsletter is really very long and I have tried to put 2 weeks worth of news into 1 so it might be worthwhile to archive this one.

I wont spend time on the intro this week and get onto what is surely a very good newsletter edition.

Have an excellent week.

VMware Accelerate: Infrastructure Independence – The Power of the Software-Defined Datacenter (SDDC)
Modern CIOs are looking to transform the way they provide IT services to their companies. The expectation is to provide elastic services to the business without sacrificing security and reliability; all while maximizing the use of internal assets and leveraging external providers as it makes sense to do so. At the same time, company executives are starting to compare their IT department’s services to those that are available from cloud providers and are questioning why their internal systems are not providing similar types of services.
The complication that CIOs face is that they have legacy systems that do not provide the elasticity and scalability required to compete with services providers in the industry. Trying to adopt cloud policies and procedures alone is not enough because ultimately CIOs will find themselves hitting limitations of the physical infrastructure’s inability to keep up with the demands that are placed on them. Physical infrastructure is extremely limited in agility because of the efforts required to make any changes to the environment. Traditionally, CIOs would attempt to improve these areas utilizing virtualization at the compute layer of the architecture. However, even in a highly-virtualized compute environment, the ability to ensure configuration and security management while trying to scale and maximize agility becomes a daunting task and exposes the CIO to undue risk.

Spring Insight “split-agent” Architecture
Spring Insight is a technology that gives visibility into an application’s runtime performance and behavior. The original design called for the deployment of an agent application at each monitored server instance. Furthermore, the agent used only an in-memory mechanism to process the collected data that was assumed to originate from Java code. Recently, a “split-agent” mechanism has been implemented that allows the separation of the collection stage from the analysis one. In other words, the data is (still) collected by the same instrumentation plugins, but can be sent via various mechanisms to an analyzer application that performs the analysis and generates the same data as before – i.e., endpoints, metrics, external resources, etc. There are several advantages to such architecture – the most important ones being

How IT Will Come Out On Top of The Cloud
Virtualization is about to change the game again in the datacenter. As the modern computing world has become comfortable with cloud computing, their appetite is accelerating for it, and doing so rapidly. In fact, Gartner recently reported that spending on public cloud services will be $109 billion this year, up from $91 billion from last year’s spend. And it will nearly double to $207 billion by 2016. That’s a consistent increase of over 20% each year, and the fastest growing area of spend according to their predictions

Simplifying the Move to VDI for Business Process Outsourcers
Chris Howard and co. at Gartner recently published an article on the benefits of hosted virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) for companies looking to offshore or outsource processes. Until recently, many BPO IT organizations have resisted the move to VDI. This has been largely due to the fact that they don’t know what they don’t know. And many BPO organizations have had questions around how to design for agentless security, how SLAs are impacted by the move to centralized management, how they can best scale out their deployments across sites and how they can build the business case to justify the move.

Identifying Non-Default Advanced & Kernel Settings Using ESXCLI 5.1
I recently came across a very cool tidbit from one of our GSS Engineers Daniel de Sao Jose about a new option in ESXCLI 5.1 which allows you to list out all ESXi advanced and kernel settings that have non-default values configured. This can come in handy when you are troubleshooting and trying to find out what advanced settings were changed on a host or if you need to capture the list of changes for documentation purposes or for creating a script to apply to other hosts.
To list all ESXi Advanced Settings, you would run the following command (4.x & 5.x):

ESXi Chronicles: vCenter Single Sign-On Part 1: what is vCenter Single Sign-On?
I was until I dived in and found answers which I will do my best to explain here.
vCenter Single Sign-On is a new feature of vSphere 5.1 that is not just an authentication broker but also a security token exchange providing a more secure way of accessing your vSphere solutions. What that means is that when you previously logged into vCenter Server, you were authenticated with the provided username and password against the Active Directory configured for vCenter Server. With vSphere 5.1 and vCenter Single SIgn-On you no longer log directly into vCenter Server but with a security domain defined by your vSphere environment. When logging in to vSphere 5.1 you actually pass authentication to the  vCenter Single Sign-On server which can be configured with multiple identity sources like Active Directory and OpenLDAP and on successful authentication, your username and password is exchanged for a security token which is then used to access the vSphere components like vCenter Server and vCenter Orchestrator etc.

VMware Virtualization Management Blog: Capacity Management and Planning Strategies in the Cloud Era
As a virtualization or cloud practitioner, you have been thrown into a new challenge and that is to address capacity management for your organization.  But what are some of the best practices to achieve this and how does capacity planning change in the new cloud-computing era?

Office of the CTO Blogs: Innovation at VMworld 2012
As I look back on VMworld in San Francisco, I can’t stop thinking about how the theme of Innovation permeated throughout the conference this year!  Things got rolling when Steve Herrod showed demos of new product and feature ideas we’re working on during his Day One keynote.  Following Steve’s keynote, I had the pleasure of sharing a behind the scenes look at how we innovate at VMware via a Spotlight Session.  My talk included three idea pitches that were presented during VMware’s internal innovation offsite – providing an inside look at the broad and novel ideas we encourage our engineers to pursue.  The pitches covered ideas on how to make data centers environmentally aware to account for heat, power and other challenges, several ways to leverage social media concepts for virtualization management and concepts around how to optimize calendaring via geo-location algorithms.  Cool stuff!

Office of the CTO Blogs: Low Latency on vSphere at VMworld 2012
I was excited to have one of our partners, Mellanox, extend a special invitation for me to speak at their Expo booth during VMworld 2012 in San Francisco. They had allocated a 30 minute slot for a Theater Presentation and promoted my presentation via nice giveaways and postcards distributed in nearby VMworld hotels.

How cool is it that an independent book hits the top of the chart two years in a row?! Frank and I are really pleased about this and we did not expect this at all. Especially not considering we also gave away a 1000 copies at VMworld for free. We want to thank our sponsors CloudPhysics and Fusion IO, and the MyVMUG people for hosting this give-away in their booth!

vSphere 5.1 All Paths Down (APD) enhancements
I’ve written about Permanent Device Loss multiple times but another scenario that some of you might have encountered is All Paths Down. All Paths Down already describes the scenario, but an example would be when for whatever reason the network between the host and the array fails. This would be result in an APD condition, meaning that the LUNs are unreachable due to the fact that all paths to the LUN are gone.

vCloud Suite 5.1 available
Server Storage 5.1 download vcloud vcloud director vcloud suite vSphere vsphere 5.1
No I didn’t set my alarm clock like Eric Sloof, just to be one of the first to post it… hence the reason this is “late”. But I got some more lined up for you though in the upcoming days. Now that the vCloud Suite 5.1 is available. Make sure to start your download engines and prep to upgrade. Before you start downloading, make sure to hit the launch page. I created a nice short URL for it

Back to Basics: Deploying the vCenter Server appliance
I am going to do a couple of blogposts with “basic” workflows using the Web Client. Let me know if you find this useful or not… I will start with deploying the vCenter Server appliance and will assume you all know how to install ESXi. I prefer using the vCenter Server appliance in my lab as I can deploy it in minutes without the need to pre-install an OS etc.

Back to Basics: Using the vSphere 5.1 Web Client to create a Datacenter object
I am going to assume you already have vCenter 5.1 up and running, if you don’t read this article. Once again, this is a “Back to Basics” series, so don’t expect deepdive info here.
First point your browser to the vSphere Web Client. The vSphere Web Client can be found at: https://<IP address or DNS name of your vCenter instance>:9443/vsphere-client/. Now you will see is a question if it is okay to install the “VMware Remote Console Plugin” as shown in the following screenshot.

What’s new in vSphere 5.1 for High Availability
As vSphere High Availability was completely revamped in 5.0 not a lot of changes have been introduced in 5.1. There are some noteworthy changes though that I figured I would share with you. So what’s cool?

Back to Basics: Using the vSphere 5.1 Web Client to create a Cluster object
We’ve shown you how to create a vSphere Datacenter object, next we are going to create a cluster object. Again, this is fairly straight forward:
Click on “Create a Cluster” in your “Getting Started” tab.
Provide a name for your cluster and tick “Turn On” for both “DRS” and “vSphere HA”.
Click “OK”.

Back to Basics: Using the vSphere 5.1 Web Client to configure a vSwitch
In the previous articles we created a Datacenter, a cluster and added hosts to it. Now that we have done that we can start finalizing the configuration. This is just one example out of the many ways to configure networking for an ESXi host, and I kept it really really simple. This is not following any best practices, I just wanted to show some of the steps. In this scenario I have 4 network cards per host and I have VLANs for each network segment. Separating traffic through the use of VLAN is highly recommended and is a best practice.

Back to Basics: Using the vSphere 5.1 Web Client to add an NFS share
If you look at the following workflow you know why I am starting to love NFS more and more… Adding an NFS datastore was easy with 5.0 (and prior) but with 5.1 it is even easier. Just a couple of steps to add an NFS datastore to your cluster:

Back to Basics: Using the vSphere 5.1 Web Client to configure iSCSI
In this article I will take you through the steps required to setup iSCSI using the vSphere 5.1 Web Client. In most iSCSI environment the VMware software iSCSI adapter is used, so that is what I will use. I had already setup a storage VMkernel NIC in one of my previous post, read that if you haven’t yet. Adding a software adapter can be done in a couple of simple steps:

MS Exchange Recovery Possibilities
Some thoughts about MS Exchange recovery possibilities.
I’ve done quite a few Exchange Server installations in my carreer. Both physical and virtual. The installation and migration processes are quite ok, but when it comes to possible recovery (recovery of DB, recovery of e-mail accounts or recovery individual emails) there are many solutions. I’ll try to outline some of them.

During my VMworld session presentation INF-SEC1282 Automating Security and Compliance with DR (VMworld account required to access recording) I gave a world premier glimpse of a prototype solution that will allow completely automated management of SSL Certificates in a vSphere environment. The solution is still under development. But if you’d like to peak into the future of an easy and completely automated SSL management world for vSphere then this article is for you.

The Case for Larger Than 2TB Virtual Disks and The Gotcha with VMFS
VMware Oracle Oracle RAC RDM SQL VHD VHDX VMFS vSphere 5 vSphere 5.1
Hypervisor competition is really starting to heat up. VMware just released vSphere 5.1 and Microsoft has recently released Windows Server 2012 and the new version of Hyper-V. A significant  new feature available now in Hyper-V / Windows 2012 is a new disk format VHDX, which has a maximum size of 64TB. With the new filesystem in Windows Server 2012 (ReFS) the maximum volume size increases to 256TB ( NTFS was limited to 16TB @ 4K cluster size). So how does vSphere 5 and 5.1 compare and what are the key considerations and gotchas? What are the implications for business critical applications? Read on to find out.

Back to Basics: Install, configure and use vSphere Replication
One of the coolest features that has been included with vSphere 5.1 in my opinion is vSphere Replication. (Make sure to read the what’s new paper) The reason for it being is that it now brings “advanced” technology to everyone (Essentials Plus and upwards). I have used vSphere Replication in 5.0 and it was nice, but with 5.1 the installation and configuration process has been improved. For instance the database is now included in the appliance and it isn’t as DNS sensitive as it was with 5.0. This makes installing and configuring it a matter of minutes.

vSphere 5.1 Storage Enhancements – Part 8: Storage I/O Control
Storage I/O Control (SIOC) was initially introduced in vSphere 4.1 to provide I/O prioritization of virtual machines running on a cluster of ESXi hosts that had access to  shared storage.  It extended the familiar constructs of shares and limits, which existed for CPU and memory, to address storage utilization through a dynamic allocation of I/O queue slots across a cluster of ESXi servers. The purpose of SIOC is to address the ‘noisy neighbour’ problem, i.e. a low priority virtual machine impacting other higher priority virtual machines due to the nature of the application and its I/O running in that low priority VM.

How to Disable the View Portal on VMware View 5.1
From a client system, users can open a browser and browse to a View Connection Server instance. The Web page that appears is called View Portal, and it contains links for downloading the installer file for View Client. Users can use View Portal to download the full View Client installer for both Windows and Mac client computers. Administrators can also configure settings so that the links on View Portal point to a different location than the VMware Download page.

Back to Basics: Install, configure and use vSphere Data Protection
Installing vSphere Data Protection is just a couple of steps. I downloaded the vSphere Replication virtual appliance. Note there are three different versions available and depending on how large your environment is you will need to select a version. I selected the 0.5TB version as I have a limited amount of virtual machines. This is how you import it and configure it, but before you begin I recommend ensuring DNS records are created before deploying the appliance!

Calling for the Best Storage Recommendations
The funny thing about technology is that there is rarely one answer that fits all situations. This is the root of the reason behind the all-too-familiar IT answer, “It depends.” Rarely is this challenge more evident than when trying to write a book that is applicable to as broad an audience as possible. The challenge is compounded when the topic of your book is a large, complex suite of software like VMware vSphere.

Protecting vCenter Server – HA or Heartbeat?
At VMworld during one of my group discussions there was a discussion around using vSphere HA or vCenter Heartbeat to protect the vCenter Server. Coincidentally it is something that we recently discussed internally on Socialcast and I figured I would give my thoughts on this topic. My answer was short and simple: It depends.

Technical White Paper - VMware vCloud Director Resource Allocation Models
VMware vCloud Director enables users to build a private cloud–based infrastructure as a service (IaaS) offering within their organization. By providing a secure, on-demand ability for end users to deploy workloads, companies can realize a level of agility previously thought impossible.

vMotion and SvMotion Details with PowerCLI
Today I was asked if there was a way to list the vMotions and SvMotions which had occurred in an infrastructure, not only this but they needed to know which hosts the VMs had moved to, the reason for this was licensing.
Firstly they needed to confirm that certain VMs were firstly setup with DRSAffinityrules as disabled, this one was straight forward in PowerCLI:

Say goodbye to the “Transfer LUN” aka “Swing LUN” aka “Stepping Stone”
Every once in a while I go through some articles and see if they need to be revised or not. As there are over 1400 articles on yellow-bricks.com that is not an easy task, I can tell you that. Today Istumbled on this article I wrote early 2010. This article discussed the use of a “swing lun” to limit the amount of LUNs masked to a single host. Let me copy/paste the part that I want to revise:

Can I protect my vCenter Server with vSphere Replication?
Someone asked this question last week when I posted my “back to basics” vSphere Replication blog. I guess protecting vCenter Server isn’t too difficult but how about recovering it after a failure?

Planning to Migrate Oracle from Unix to Linux on vSphere
VMware AIX HPUX Itanium Linux Oracle pSeries RedHat Solaris SPARC vSphere
A while ago with much fanfare Oracle announced it would no longer develop it’s flagship software and database for use on HPUX and HP’s Itanium platform due to its perception that the platform didn’t have a solid roadmap. This caused a great flurry of lawyers filing papers on HP’s side. But the end result right now after the lawyers got involved Oracle will still be supporting HPUX for the meantime. But who knows how long this will last. So now might be the perfect time to consider migrating your Oracle databases and applications off the HPUX systems (and any other traditional Unix platform) and onto Linux on vSphere. This article will take you through a high level overview of why you should migrate to Linux on vSphere and some of the important considerations and methods to achieve a successfully migration. This is based on the experience I’ve gained from doing a few successful migrations projects, some of which I spoke about during breakout sessions at VMworld US 2012.

vSphere Data Protection (VDP) – install, configure, manage
vSphere Data protection – a quick guide how to deploy and use
vSphere Data Protection is a new backup product, which does not bring an additional cost, but it’s included in vSphere Essentials Plus and higher VMware vSphere package. The product is based on EMC’s Avamar code and present an interesting upgrade for existing customers which are upgrading from vSphere 4.x where vSphere Data Protection (VDP) was bundled.

VMware vSphere 5.1 Documentation Center - PDF and E-book Formats
VMware really did an outstanding job with the availability of vSphere 5.1 information at the newvSphere 5.1 Documentation Center. It offers a wide range of documents in searchable HTML format but also offers all guides in PFD, ePub and mobi format. It even has a link to one downloadable zip file with all the vSphere 5 PDFs you need.

How to move vCloud Transfer Directory
VMware’s instructions on how to install multiple vCloud Cells are rather clear, you first create a NFS share and mount that to the location “/opt/vmware/vcloud-director/data/transfer”. Then install both vCloud Cells and you’re done. In a single vCloud Cell install, the cell will use the local disk for the transfer directory. For a multi cell environment this is not the desired configuration, but even in a single cell environment this could get you into troubles when importing large VMs. How to move from a local transfer directory to a NFS shared transfer directory?

ALERT: vSphere Replication 5.1 unable to recover protected virtual machines
VMware has become aware of an issue whereby when the Recovery workflow is invoked through the VR 5.1 user interface, the VRMS are instructed to sync to the latest changes from the primary virtual machine. However, since the primary host (or its storage) is not accessible, the sync fails, hence the entire recovery fails. Symptoms include:
