A Couple Questions on VMware vSphere 5 Image Customizations
A couple of weeks ago a service provider has some specific best practice questions regarding VMware vSphere 5 image customizations. The service provider is planning an upgrade to VMware vSphere 5.0 and is using Image Builder CLI to create a customization of the ESXi image for all supported hardware platforms (e.g. HP and Dell.) They wanted to ensure they had the smallest image possible without losing any functionality and ensuring all relevant vendor specific management functions.

New Webinar: Operational Efficiencies for the CloudOps and DevOps Era - August 16th @ 9am PDT
Software is a competitive differentiator in every market and needs to run on fast, flexible and reliable infrastructure to meet business demands. Learn how VMware is helping define new and emerging roles in the industry – CloudOps and DevOps – by increasing the benefits of virtualization at the infrastructure level through automated provisioning and predictive monitoring. VMware is preparing our customers’ infrastructures for modern applications where your own customer expects to access your products and services anytime from anywhere on any device.

2 Ways Fast/Big Data Impacts the IT Org Structure
Though my background includes time as both a developer, architect, and CTO, much of my time today is spent discussing applications with senior IT executives. I manage an application development division of a national VAR and focus on the vFabric stack from top to bottom. One of the challenges I face is trying to provide application-centric consulting services to operations/infrastructure teams who (a) don't really own the decision of app software infrastructure and/or (b) don't understand it and, (c) worse in some cases, don't care. Recently, I've come to love my job for two primary reasons:

The Spring Insight RabbitMQ Plugin
Spring Insight is currently bundled with SpringSource Tool Suite or vFabric tc Server.
Download STS
Download tc Server Developer Edition
RabbitMQ, vFabric’s message delivery bus, is widely used across n-tiered applications that require a reliable and fast queuing system. Message queues are a useful strategy in modern applications, helping to decouple application components so they can work asynchronously, while the message bus directs transactions between application components or external services. A new RabbitMQ client plugin for Spring Insight helps monitor your application’s behavior when communicating with RabbitMQ servers, and can help you analyze latencies and errors within your application that might not become immediately visible as no end-user interaction is made.

Middleware virtualization has three key trends that we are observing with our customer base: 1) Consolidation, 2) Elasticity and Flexibility, and 3) Performance.  In this blog, we examine each one of these trends briefly and invite you to come along for technical deep dive at this year’s VMworld session APP-CAP1426 - The Benefits of Virtualization for Middleware to be presented in both San Francisco and Barcelona.

Deploying vert.x Applications to Cloud Foundry
Developers can now use vert.x, a framework for highly scalable web applications, Cloud Foundry has been a leader in providing an open Platform as a Service (PaaS), which allows for polyglot programming with a choice of multiple languages and frameworks. With recent releases of standalone application feature and Java 7 on, developers now have a perfect environment to create vert.x applications, which can be written in any language that can run on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), and deploy them to run on the JVM at
Get Certified In VMware Cloud Computing
In my last blog post, VMware's First Cloud Certification, I announced how VMware was in the private beta stage of their first IaaS cloud certification, the new VMware certified professional - Infrastructure as a Service, or VCP5-IaaS. At that time, few details were available except that this was a more advanced certification than the VCP5, as the VCP5-IaaS required a VCP5.

VMware Provider Guide: Securing Hybrid Clouds with vShield Edge VPNs (Part 1)
The ability to securely interconnect physical and virtual datacenters with virtual private networks (VPNs) is one of the most important tools for customers and service providers alike. VPNs allow customers to securely connect their own physical, virtual, and cloud environments to virtual datacenters hosted by service providers, thereby eliminating the need to worry about loss or corruption while transferring data and enabling truly secure hybrid clouds.

VMware Provider Guide: Securing Hybrid Clouds with vShield Edge VPNs (Part 2)
In Part 1 of this series, we gave a brief introduction into VMware’s vShield Edge and how vShield Edge can help providers of vCloud Powered services securely interconnect customers’ enterprise datacenters with virtual datacenters in the cloud.  In this post we will delve into the logistics of establishing single or multi-site VPNs.

Government agencies get a ‘View’ into anywhere, anytime access
The government is not immune to the friction between demand for choices in devices and  requirement for security and control.  The variety of non-traditional devices is pushing the boundaries of the traditional four walls.
The once futuristic concept of teleworking and mobility is today’s reality. Given these challenges and opportunities organizations must imagine how the future can and will look.

Deploy ThinApp and AppLink packages together
There is no mechanism to deploy ThinApp packages together. When a ThinApp package is  dependent on another ThinApp (Applink), they have to be deployed separately, followed by adding the Applink path in the ThinApp package.ini (OptionalApplinks or RequiredApplinks). Further, it requires rebuild of the ThinApp to pick up the Applink path.

ReadOnlyData or readonlydata?
Should you use ReadOnlyData or readonlydata? With ThinApp version 4.7.2 it doesn’t matter! Many package.ini parameters have been case sensitive in ThinApp version 4.7.1 and older. With version 4.7.2 all parameters in package.ini are case insensitive.

VMFS Heap Considerations
By default, an ESXi host has 80MB of VMFS heap at its disposal. This is defined in the advanced setting VMFS3.MaxHeapSizeMB. The main consumer of VMFS heap are the pointer blocks which are used to address file blocks in very large files/VMDKs on a VMFS filesystem. Therefore, the larger your VMDKs, the more VMFS heap you can consume. This is more true on VMFS-5, where double-indirect pointers exist to allow the unified 1MB file block size back a 2TB VMDK.

Office of the CTO Blogs: Why VDI is more Secure than Physical Desktops
There has been some interesting conversations recently at both BriForum and in the blogosphere about VDI and Security, the premise being that VDI is not more secure than other ways of running Microsoft Windows. I want to address that comment head on and unequivocally state that VDI has quite a few security benefits. Now, let me state up front that VDI does not make the Windows OS more secure, nor is it a panacea for every possible security threat in today’s world of interconnected systems. However, it is well known that security is best addressed with multiple layers of protection with multiple defenses and VDI is one such technology. In particular it improves security by enabling better isolation and controls over the environment in which the Windows system exists. The View VDI environment running centrally in the data center on vSphere, in concert with technologies like vShield, has significant security benefits over physical endpoints, particularly mobile laptops running natively. These benefits accrue even when both are “well-managed”.

Accelerate Your Journey to Your Cloud with Application Modernization
Please join meon Thursday, August 16th at 8:00am PT as I talk about the Journey to full IT as a Service (ITaaS).Most people think that ITaaS stops at Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), the reality of this is that simply providing a end-user portal for rapid provisioning really doesn’t help us solve the problems of legacy applications and frameworks.Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is not the end of the Journey to Your Cloud. Although IT Automation and Orchestration is critical to a successful ITaaS deployment, you need to modernize applications to make your business truly cloud ready. Application mobility is essential for business agility, simply virtualizing your J2EE stack or legacy applications isn’t enough. Join me to learn to modernize your applications for mobility and for the influx of Big Data.

EMC – Using naviseccli to locate unused LUNs
I know I carry on like a bit of a pork chop when it comes to naviseccli – but I think some of the adulation is worth it. We’ve been trying to “reclaim storage” for a little while now (that’s code for not being allowed to spend money on additional capacity), and I’ve been looking for unused LUNs that may have been decommissioned and not unbound. To do this with naviseccli, use the getunusedluns command.

Zero Client Touch-Enabled Display Demo [Video]
Last week I blogged about my experiences using a GVISION 19?, a touch-enabled PCoIP Zero-Client LCD Display (Zero Client Touch-Enabled Display). Later on the week VMware SE Desktop Specialist, Bernie Cyplik, shared with me a video where he demonstrate how the touch enabled display could be used in a healthcare environment.

During a recent customer engagement for a Virtual Infrastructure build out I was tasked with deploying an Isolated/Air Gap Update Manager Download Service architecture. If you do not know what an isolated Update Manager Download Service is then read this article first before carrying on. I came across a few hurdles during this deployment and so i waned to create a quick reference of what I followed for my future reference and to hopefully help anyone who gets the problems I was getting during the setup

AutoLab 1.0 released
Hi everyone, it’s Alastair again with more AutoLab news.  Today we have released version 1.0 of the AutoLab which is a huge leap.  As you may have seen on my Demitasse blog the AutoLab has a sponsor, Veeam are helping make the AutoLab better.  In AutoLab 1.0 we not only have the complete vSphere lab in a box but now also the ability to add Veeam Backup and Replication and Veeam ONE into the lab. This allows evaluation testing and training on these products without deploying onto your production vSphere.

Technical Whitepaper - Secure Segmentation of Tier 1 Applications in the DMZ
VMware vShield App (vShield App) is a centrally managed, stateful, distributed virtual firewall. It protects virtual machines by placing a stateful firewall filter on every virtual network adaptor. vShield App enables simple-to-use, non-disruptive implementation of network security in VMware vSphere environments. This document focuses on the use of vShield App to secure applications in the DMZ.

VMware Switch – What is it?
Horizon Mobile running on Android Mobile Phone.
Well not exacly, because the Horizon Mobile Manager runs as a VM in the datacanter and the VMware Switch is installed on the Android phone. VMware Switch is part of the infrastructure – the client, which enables you to use the phone as a platform to run enterprise applications.
To control the groups, users and data and access to internal company’s applications, you’ll be using the Horizon Mobile Manager. The Horizon Mobile has been already demoed the first time last year at VMworld 2011 where VMware has partnered with phone maker LG.

Why use storage for VDI?
The storage technologies and vendors available on the market today have definitely evolved from simple spindle RAID groups and one tier caching mechanism available from 5 years ago. The options are so many that it’s not only difficult to understand and grasp all different technologies, but almost impossible to compare them side-by-side.

VMware View fully virtualized GPU NVIDIA VGX [VIDEO]
The team at the Dell Solution Center recorded this video that demonstrate the power of the NVIDIA VGX virtualized GPU for VDI environment. In this video the display protocol in use is PCoIP.
NVIDIA VGX uniquely addresses the user experience issues of traditional VDI by adding a fully virtualized GPU board into each of your VDI hosts. This now enables up to one hundred users to share a VGX board with GPU-accelerated VDI (GPU-VDI). The result is high responsive windows, multimedia playback, and the ability to execute enterprise applications such as AutoCAD and Photoshop without performance issues. The technology literally convert any average desktop or thin-client into a graphical performance workstation.
