VMware Partners Gear Up for VMworld 2012

VMware success is complemented by partner success. Because we work so closely with our partners, we can help customers turn IT possibilities into business outcomes. The VMware Partner Network also has been instrumental in making VMworld more successful than ever. Together, VMware and our partners are dedicated to making this premier virtualization and cloud-computing event better every year—and this year is no exception.

Live Video at VMworld 2012 San Francisco

VMworld will be packed with live video content.  If you're attending the conference in San Francisco, don't miss

General Sessions on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, live at the Moscone Center.  And plan to spend time in the VMworld Hangspace during conference hours to watch live streaming interviews hosted by the VMware (VMTN) Community and TheCUBE.

SMB at VMworld

VMworld is the place for SMB IT pros to get the tools and training you need to master new virtualization and cloud computing innovations that are pushing system and software delivery to the next level.  Be on the lookout for these programs that are specifically designed for you. Attend SMB specific sessions, visit the SMB pod in the Solutions Exchange to see demos, enter our SMB contest, and watch for updates from the VMware SMB social channels.

Share Your VMworld Experience

VMworld 2012 is coming to San Francisco and is set to be the biggest conference yet in the epic history of VMworld. VMworld is fast & furious -- loaded with ton of information, networking, education, experience and adventure -- and it goes by before you know it.

Get Certified at VMworld!

VMworld San Francisco 2012 is just days away. And, along with the countless sessions, networking opportunities and labs, we are offering VMware Certification exams on-site this year. Delivering exams on-site is no small task, but with the release of VCP-IaaS and the always-expanding demand in the market for VMware certified professionals, we knew it was important to make it easy for you to either upgrade your current certification or achieve your first.

Access the Official VMworld Mobile Application

Make sure you have VMworld with you while at the conference with the official VMworld 2012 mobile application. It is a show program, breakout session schedule builder and Solutions Exchange guide for attendees of the VMworld conference. The application is compatible with all smartphones.

With the mobile application, you can:

Don't Miss the Annual 5K Fun Run

Join

your fellow VMworld attendees in a special bike ride and fun run on Wednesday, August 29 at Crissy Field (just steps from the world famous Golden Gate Bridge). You will enjoy a nice 5k run/walk taking in the sights of the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz and historic Fort Point.

VMworld Europe Advance Rate Ends September 7

Don’t miss your chance to save €350 and attend

VMworld to get the tools and training you need to master the new cloud landscape, with the speed, security and control you’ve come to expect.  We are ready. The technology is here. And the partners are in place.

Best of VMworld Europe 2012 User Awards: Deadline 7 September, 2012

In conjunction with VMware, TechTarget Inc. will be hosting the third annual Best of VMworld Europe Awards. Building on the success of last two years, these awards will once again recognise the most innovative and distinguished uses of VMware virtualisation and its ecosystem of products.

VMworld 2012 Europe Schedule Builder Live

Again this year, attendees must pre-register for sessions. Without pre-registration, you will not be guaranteed a seat in any breakout sessions.

If you are registered for VMworld Europe, view

a full listing of sessions, organize your days, and log-in

to your VMworld account to sign-up for the sessions you want to attend. Most sessions will be repeated at least once and we will be adding additional sessions based on popularity, so if it is full, check back.

New Runtime Module for Node.js Applications

In the previous blog post,

Cloud Foundry Now Supports Auto-Reconfiguration for Node.js Applications, we saw that Node.js applications deployed to

CloudFoundry.com can be automatically reconfigured to connect to Cloud Foundry services. However, there may be situations where you want to opt-out of that feature to have finer control over service connections or to overcome its limitations. In those cases, your applications would be required to parse JSON-formatted environment variables to perform that same function. While this is not overly complex given that JSON is trivial to parse with JavaScript, you will be required to understand the environment variable names and their payload schema. The new cf-runtime module introduced in this blog simplifies this by providing a way to obtain application information and service connection objects. This module moves Cloud Foundry’s Node.js support forward to the match the support for

Java and

Rubyapplications.

Interesting Storage Stuff at VMworld 2012 (US)

VMware Hands On Labs Blog: Top 10 places to see and hang out during VMworld 2012

It’s been a while since I publish my Top 10 list and thought it would be good to do so now that VMworld is back in SF. I have lived in SF most of my life and tend to prefer high value low dollar neighborhood restaurants and establishments dedicated to refreshments – below is my list…

Please keep in mind that most of these places you will have to take a cab from Moscone – most are about 15 minutes away – this could also be part of the fun.

VMware Accelerate: Enterprise IT services delivery methods are changing quickly, so must the role of the CIO

Enterprise IT services are maturing rapidly, in areas of both standardization/commoditization (email, general ledger software) and inversely in areas of true innovation (cloud operating systems and software defined data center operations and management software). This rapidly changing landscape presents CIOs, and as importantly, the rest of the C-suite the opportunity to re-calibrate the portion of the IT budget consumed by creating and producing IT services to one that truly creates business advantage.

Workstation Zealot: VMware Workstation 9 – Now Available World-Wide!

The Workstation team is thrilled to introduce VMware Workstation 9.  It’s been 12 years since Workstation first launched and dramatically changed the way technical professionals worked with virtual machines.   Since then the team has worked to bring bring innovation with each new release.  We feel Workstation 9 continues this tradition.

Team Fusion: Announcing VMware Fusion 5 packed with 70+ new features and optimized for OS X Mountain Lion

With the recent availability of Mountain Lion, new Macs and the upcoming release of Windows 8, we thought it would be the perfect time to launch a new version of VMware Fusion. Today the team is extremely excited to announce VMware Fusion 5 with over 70 new features.

Here are some of the key features:

To virtualize vCenter or not, that has been an age-old question. Business Critical Applications: Think You Can’t Run Oracle on vSphere?; Listen to What Our Customers are Saying

I still hear about too many IT managers delaying the virtualization of their tier 1 Business critical databases because of the misperception  surrounding running Oracle on vSphere. My advice to these managers is stop listening to the noise  and start listing to VMware’s customers success stories because that’s all that really matters.

I echo Martin’s comments and would like to share more about VMware’s commitment to this and other open-source communities as well as to the broader interoperability needs of modern cloud computing.

VMware R&D Innovation Lounge at #VMworld!

If I needed to pick one thing that I am really excited about at VMworld this year (besides #notsupported) then it probably is the

R&D Innovation Lounge. You might wonder why, well a couple of months back I had the pleasure of attending our internal R&D innovations event and was blown away by some of the amazing ideas / research projects. Now a mini version of this will be held at VMworld…

How do you stay up-to-date on VMware product patches and updates?

A while ago I posted the news about vCenter Server Update 1a and the latest ESXi patch being released, and in the comments section a reader asked some questions about updating VMware ESXi specifically and other VMware products in general. His first question was: How do you know that a vCenter/ESXi/any VMware product patch/update is released? As a VMware admin, how do you stay up-to-date on this

Countdown to VMworld T-10 - Social Networking

It is almost here, 10 days until VMware’s biggest event of the year, the biggest virtualization event of the year.

The number of reasons to be at this event are countless,

so I decided to create a daily post counting down (in no particular order) to the event, each day with a great reason to be at VMworld - and here is number one.

Countdown to VMworld T-9 - Sessions

Have you seen the

Schedule Builder? The amount of sessions is astounding!!Unfortunately there were approximately another 700-800 sessions that did not make the cut

this year with the Call for Papers – but that is another story..

Almost everything and anything you can think of regarding VMware and virtualization will be covered. 437 Sessions on:

Countdown to VMworld T-8 - Hands on Labs

36 different Labs to choose from. My post from

last years labs.

The amount of VM’s created and destroyed over the week, will be more than you will probably ever create in a lifetime. And all of it sitting in the Cloud. VMware really eat their own dog food a,d have created a great experience.

Countdown to VMworld T-7 - Blogger Lounge

Being a blogger has its perks, being a vExpert has it perks as well. We have exposure – but I promise you that is not why we do it.

Most of us do not blog for a living – we all have our regular 9-5 jobs (and then some) and we write these articles on our own spare time.

Countdown to VMworld T-6 - Parties

Personally this is not really a big one for me – but I guess that for the rest of the world probably it is – that why they always go out of their way to find a star – this it is Bon Jovi – to perform during the party.

Countdown to VMworld T-5 - Solutions Exchange

The Solutions floor. 256 different vendors, some well known and some less known – but everyone has something to show – that is in some way connected to virtualizations.

Countdown to VMworld T-4 - vBrownbags/Tech Talks

There were over 1000 submissions for sessions for VMworld 2012 – but of course not all were accepted. So the idea of the Lightning Tech Talks in the community lounge. There is a packed

schedule every single day starting with a vExpert hour every single morning between 10.00 and 11.00.

New Book - The Official VCP5 Certification Guide

Trust the bestselling Official Cert Guide series from VMware Press to help you learn, prepare, and practice for VCP5 exam success. They are the only VMware authorized self-study books and are built with the objective of providing assessment, review, and practice to help ensure you are fully prepared for your certification exam.

Troubleshooting ThinPrint in VMware View

VMware OEMs a sub-set of the .Print Server Engine full-blown product. Many people think ThinPrint is a VMware owned product and/or feature, but it is not. ThinPrint is a German company that stands on its own and was founded in 1999. Their .print generic drivers can be found in a range of strategic partnerships with VMware, Citrix, Fuji Xerox, HP, Lexmark, Microsoft, Wyse, and others. ThinPrint has managed to embed their ThinPrint agent into a range of devices, from Thin Clients to Printers and the company reign almost alone in its market segment.

I was also provided with ioTurbine software, which combined with an in guest driver acts like a massive read cache and still supports vMotion. ioTurbine’s objective is to allow you to consolidate many more systems on the same server without having to have lots of RAM assigned to act as IO cache to get acceptable performance. This article will focus on the raw IO performance when the Fusion-io IODrive2 cards are used as a datastore. I will follow up with another article on ioTurbine when used with Linux when testing high performance Oracle Databases.

Rethink IT: Try your own vCloud in minutes
Today, we’re announcing that we’re introducing a new service that allows you to get your own vCloud IaaS service in minutes, called vCloud Service Evaluation. We heard from many customers that they came to vmware.com to learn more about vCloud services, but that it wasn’t easy to sign up with a credit card, kick the tires, and learn by doing. vCloud Service Evaluation will provide a quick, easy and low-cost way for you to learn about the advantages of a vCloud through hands-on testing and experimentation.
You can sign up for the beta here: http://vmware.com/go/vcloudbeta. We’ll be sending out invites to those who sign up the week of August 27th, and those of you who are going to VMworld in San Francisco can see and try the service at the cloud services pod within the VMware booth.
You’ll need a credit card to use the service. It makes the service self-funding, and we can keep things simple, avoiding complex “service quotas” and other artificial restrictions – and also offer Windows VMs. We learned that customers have widely differing requirements for tests and proofs of concept. So, instead of annoying restrictions, you pay a small amount for what you use – a 1Gb Linux VM with one vCPU is $0.04/hour – and you are free to run the VMs you need until you are done. Once you have entered your card details, you’ll get your credentials within 15 minutes. If we need to verify anything, you’ll get a call.
To keep costs down, we commissioned a VMware vCloud service provider to build and operate the service on our behalf. We’re giving you a vanilla example of how a vCloud Powered service – delivered by a VMware vCloud service provider – would work. It’s worth pointing out that vCloud service providers offer significantly more in terms of cloud functionality. vCloud Service Evaluation has all the basics like a catalog of useful VM templates, virtual networking, persistent storage, external IP addresses, firewalls, load balancers, the vCloud API etc., but you’ll get a lot more in a production vCloud service.
To find that production vCloud service, head to vcloud.vmware.com: the gateway to the world’s largest network of certified compatible public cloud services, including more than 145 vClouds in 28 countries.
To get you started quickly, vCloud Service Evaluation offers a variety of pre-built content templates (at no charge) including Wordpress, Joomla!, Sugar CRM, LAMP stack, Windows Server and a mix of web and application stacks and OSes. You can also Bring Your Own VM (BYOVM). That’s right, you can BYOVM and put it into your own private catalog for deployment. You can do that either by uploading it directly into vCloud Director, or you can run the vCloud Connector VMs into your account (they’re in the public catalog) and use that to transfer your VMs from vSphere or any other vCloud.

tc Server Best Practices with RPM Install

With

vFabric tc Server, we are building several conventions and other techniques into the software to form a core set of best practices. With this new installation method for tc Server, we are going beyond copying files. These steps implement a set of conventions designed to enhance the manageability, consistency, and security of a tc Server installation. For sysadmins, it isn’t a cure for “on the job insanity,” but it helps.

Top 5 Reasons App Teams Should Come to VMworld

VMware is excited about the upcoming VMworld 2012 in San Francisco on August 26 through 30. The VMworld team published the

Top 5 Reasons Why You Should Come to VMworld, including getting the inside information on what’s next, hands-on training, and meeting the industry luminaries that this event attracts. However, some may not glean from this list that VMworld is aimed not just at virtualization infrastructure teams, but at app teams as well. While VMware is the leader in virtualization and cloud technologies, we are also squarely focused on helping customers build apps that are optimized to run on this infrastructure, and the vFabric team’s presence at VMworld this year underscores this fact in spades.

4 Drivers behind Intel’s Cloud Foundry Choice and Why

Our goal at Intel was to let software developers get an innovative idea into production in less than a day.

One of the large aspects of meeting this goal is delivering a robust

PaaS solution. We made a decision in mid-2011 that PaaS would enable this goal, and for our wide range of data and security requirements, running it in our private cloud was paramount. In searching for a PaaS solution for our Enterprise Private cloud, we conducted a study of solutions that could be landed within an enterprise. We specifically wanted a solution that could run on an

IaaS and help address our key challenges.

5 Ways IT Benefits From The New Cloud Operating Model

It’s official. IT’s investment in the cloud is accelerating. Gartner recently reported that spending on public cloud services will reach $109 billion this year, up from $91 billion from last year’s spend. That’s an increase of over 20% in one year, and the fastest growing area of spend according to their predictions.

Cloud Foundry Now Supports Auto-Reconfiguration for Node.js Applications

Cloud Foundry has long supported

auto-reconfiguration for Spring and

Ruby applications. Now we are pleased to add auto-reconfiguration support for Node.js applications as well. Deploying Node.js applications to Cloud Foundry previously required

parsing of environmental variables and overwriting server and service connection function calls to use Cloud Foundry specific parameters. This approach was not intuitive to developers who just started to use Cloud Foundry to deploy their applications. They would need to consult the documentation and figure out what port and host they need to connect to. Moreover, if an application uses services, developers would need to configure their applications to use the proper service connection parameters.

New vSphere Design Training by Scott Lowe

VMware IaaS infrastructure clouds are built upon solid vSphere infrastructures. Those infrastructures are only solid if they are designed properly. Improperly designed vSphere infrastructures can result in unreliable and poorly performing cloud infrastructures (and no one wants that). Whether you are using vCloud Director today, or not, proper vSphere design is imperative.

VMware and EMC: Charting a Joint Path to End-User Computing

One of the biggest IT challenges today is the fundamental shift in the way employees work.  They’re no longer tethered to an IT-provided PC—now they want to bring in their own devices, including iPads, Android devices, iPhones and laptops.   To stay relevant, the IT department has to accommodate—even embrace—this trend.  And that means rethinking how to deliver end-user services.

vSphere Storage Appliance (VSA) & Fault Tolerant VMs

I was recently involved in some discussions about how Fault Tolerance would behave on the vSphere Storage Appliance.

The crux of the matter was what would happen if a host in the vSphere Storage Appliance (VSA) suffered a failure. Those of you who are familiar with the VSA will be aware that the VSA takes the local storage from an ESXi host and presents it as a mirrored NFS datastore. Therefore both compute and storage are on the same host. In the event of a host failure, another VSA node (ESXi host) in the cluster takes over the role of presenting the shared storage, and promotes its mirrored copy of the NFS datastore from secondary to primary.

VMworld 2012 - Networking sessions

VMworld 2012 is fast approaching and I wanted to provide you a quick update on some of the key networking sessions conducted by VMware folks. Obviously, I will be one of the presenter and would like to invite you to that session more than any other sessions !! ( just kidding )

Networking is definitely going to be one of the hot topic of discussion at VMworld 2012. This is not only due to the Nicira acquisition but also due to the amount of new networking capabilities and features we are going to announce during the course of the conference.

Storage vMotion Considerations when using dedicated VM Swapfile Datastore

I had a query recently asking if I could explain why the space usage on a dedicated VM swapfile datastore increased during a Storage vMotion operation. I did some testing in-house and noticed that  a second .vswp file is created on the dedicated VM swap datastore during a migration.

VMworld 2012: Auto Deploy , ESXi Security, and vSphere Upgrades

What do Auto Deploy, ESXi Security and vSphere Upgrades have in common?  These are the three VMworld 2012 breakout sessions I'll be presenting at this year.  I’ve been a little out of pocket the past few days working on the slides and am glad to finally have them done (well, mostly done ;).  Now I just need to find a way to resist the urge to keep tweaking things.

Cannot Change ESXi "Scratch" Location With Auto Deploy 5.0

When using Auto Deploy to provision ESXi hosts there is no requirement for a local boot disk or any kind of local storage.  When you boot a "diskless" host using Auto Deploy the host’s "scratch" location will default to /tmp/scratch (i.e. ramdisk), which is not recommended.  This basically means your log files are running in memory and will be lost each time you reboot.  The same thing happens when you boot your hosts using USB/SD – do to write sensitivity with USB/SD ESXi will not use them for scratch, even if there is plenty of available space, and when there is no other local storage scratch will go to /tmp/scratch.

I Love The Cloud Stickers

I went ahead and had some stickers made for VMworld and I wanted to give my readers the first chance to obtain some of these wicked pieces of art! These are high quality full color stickers printed on premium 70lb label stock with a high gloss UV coating applied. They’re oval in shape and are 3.5″ wide x 2″ tall, they’ll fit perfectly on your laptop or anywhere else you want to stick them.

I set restart priorities but still my VMs seem to be powered on in a different order!

On the VMware Community someone asked this question about

restart priorities. At the same time I received a question on a similar topic via email. This particular question was as follows:

I have restart priorities defined on my cluster. However even if I place my virtual machines for which this order applies on one host and test a failure they seem to come online in the wrong order…

Installing vCloud Adapter for vCenter Operations Manager

I had to go through the installation of the vCloud Adapter into vCenter Operations Manager today and although the steps are in the doc I couldn’t get it to work, I ended up following

Kendrick Coleman’s post here, although this worked I was later informed there was a much easier way to do this.

Randy Keener who works for DevOps at VMware showed me how to do it the correct (and easier) way, as I was going through this again so I thought I would take some screen shots to make things easier for anyone else who is unable to follow documentation like me !

SQLXML 4.0 SP1 10.0.1600.60 for VMware vCenter Configuration Manager

SQLXML 4.0 SP1 10.0.1600.60 vCenter Configuration Manager vCenter Configuration Manager 5.5 VCM VMware web service

A very quick posting to maybe save someone some time while trying to get this component installed and for vCenter Configuration Manager’s system checks to verify it.

One of the components required for the installation of the collector and web server for VCM is SQLXML SP1. The installation documentation from VMware states the below in relation to the requirement:

VMware Thinapp managed by Horizon Application Manger Video

A video from VMware showing the integration of VMware Thinapp 4.7.3  and VMware Horizon.

The video shows the whole process, like the prescan process > installation of a software > and then a post scan. The new screen which presents the integration checkbox where it’s possible to specify the URL of Horizon appliance, and where the presenter is building a Virtualized Internet Explorer 6. In fact, when you check the box for the application to be managed by Horizon, the standalone exe file can’t be executed. A message saying that the application is managed by Horizon is showed.

A Couple Questions on VMware vSphere 5 Image Customizations
A couple of weeks ago a service provider has some specific best practice questions regarding VMware vSphere 5 image customizations. The service provider is planning an upgrade to VMware vSphere 5.0 and is using Image Builder CLI to create a customization of the ESXi image for all supported hardware platforms (e.g. HP and Dell.) They wanted to ensure they had the smallest image possible without losing any functionality and ensuring all relevant vendor specific management functions.

5 Key Challenges with Financial Services Data
Despite a troubled world economy, the data needed to run financial services keeps getting faster, bigger, more global, and more diverse.
As a result, there are new challenges to remaining nimble – quickly harnessing data in new ways to seize business opportunity, and to holistically manage risk.
In this blog, we’ll discuss the challenges that are spurring innovation and forcing change in Financial Services Application and Data Architectures. In a related session at VMworld, (APP-CAP3080 - Big Data, Fast Data in the Cloud Ready Front Office), you’ll hear more about our work to provide high performance, cost effective solutions to address 5 key challenges to managing financial services data.

New Webinar: Operational Efficiencies for the CloudOps and DevOps Era - August 16th @ 9am PDT
Software is a competitive differentiator in every market and needs to run on fast, flexible and reliable infrastructure to meet business demands. Learn how VMware is helping define new and emerging roles in the industry – CloudOps and DevOps – by increasing the benefits of virtualization at the infrastructure level through automated provisioning and predictive monitoring. VMware is preparing our customers’ infrastructures for modern applications where your own customer expects to access your products and services anytime from anywhere on any device.

2 Ways Fast/Big Data Impacts the IT Org Structure
Though my background includes time as both a developer, architect, and CTO, much of my time today is spent discussing applications with senior IT executives. I manage an application development division of a national VAR and focus on the vFabric stack from top to bottom. One of the challenges I face is trying to provide application-centric consulting services to operations/infrastructure teams who (a) don't really own the decision of app software infrastructure and/or (b) don't understand it and, (c) worse in some cases, don't care. Recently, I've come to love my job for two primary reasons:

The Spring Insight RabbitMQ Plugin
Spring Insight is currently bundled with SpringSource Tool Suite or vFabric tc Server.
Download STS
Download tc Server Developer Edition
RabbitMQ, vFabric’s message delivery bus, is widely used across n-tiered applications that require a reliable and fast queuing system. Message queues are a useful strategy in modern applications, helping to decouple application components so they can work asynchronously, while the message bus directs transactions between application components or external services. A new RabbitMQ client plugin for Spring Insight helps monitor your application’s behavior when communicating with RabbitMQ servers, and can help you analyze latencies and errors within your application that might not become immediately visible as no end-user interaction is made.

Middleware virtualization has three key trends that we are observing with our customer base: 1) Consolidation, 2) Elasticity and Flexibility, and 3) Performance.  In this blog, we examine each one of these trends briefly and invite you to come along for technical deep dive at this year’s VMworld session APP-CAP1426 - The Benefits of Virtualization for Middleware to be presented in both San Francisco and Barcelona.

Deploying vert.x Applications to Cloud Foundry
Developers can now use vert.x, a framework for highly scalable web applications, withCloudFoundry.com. Cloud Foundry has been a leader in providing an open Platform as a Service (PaaS), which allows for polyglot programming with a choice of multiple languages and frameworks. With recent releases of standalone application feature and Java 7 on CloudFoundry.com, developers now have a perfect environment to create vert.x applications, which can be written in any language that can run on the Java Virtual Machine (JVM), and deploy them to run on the JVM at CloudFoundry.com.

At that time, few details were available except that this was a more advanced certification than the VCP5, as the VCP5-IaaS required a VCP5.

VMware Provider Guide: Securing Hybrid Clouds with vShield Edge VPNs (Part 1)
The ability to securely interconnect physical and virtual datacenters with virtual private networks (VPNs) is one of the most important tools for customers and service providers alike. VPNs allow customers to securely connect their own physical, virtual, and cloud environments to virtual datacenters hosted by service providers, thereby eliminating the need to worry about loss or corruption while transferring data and enabling truly secure hybrid clouds.

VMware Provider Guide: Securing Hybrid Clouds with vShield Edge VPNs (Part 2)
In Part 1 of this series, we gave a brief introduction into VMware’s vShield Edge and how vShield Edge can help providers of vCloud Powered services securely interconnect customers’ enterprise datacenters with virtual datacenters in the cloud.  In this post we will delve into the logistics of establishing single or multi-site VPNs.

Government agencies get a ‘View’ into anywhere, anytime access
The government is not immune to the friction between demand for choices in devices and  requirement for security and control.  The variety of non-traditional devices is pushing the boundaries of the traditional four walls.
The once futuristic concept of teleworking and mobility is today’s reality. Given these challenges and opportunities organizations must imagine how the future can and will look.

Deploy ThinApp and AppLink packages together
There is no mechanism to deploy ThinApp packages together. When a ThinApp package is  dependent on another ThinApp (Applink), they have to be deployed separately, followed by adding the Applink path in the ThinApp package.ini (OptionalApplinks or RequiredApplinks). Further, it requires rebuild of the ThinApp to pick up the Applink path.

ReadOnlyData or readonlydata?
Should you use ReadOnlyData or readonlydata? With ThinApp version 4.7.2 it doesn’t matter! Many package.ini parameters have been case sensitive in ThinApp version 4.7.1 and older. With version 4.7.2 all parameters in package.ini are case insensitive.

VMFS Heap Considerations
By default, an ESXi host has 80MB of VMFS heap at its disposal. This is defined in the advanced setting VMFS3.MaxHeapSizeMB. The main consumer of VMFS heap are the pointer blocks which are used to address file blocks in very large files/VMDKs on a VMFS filesystem. Therefore, the larger your VMDKs, the more VMFS heap you can consume. This is more true on VMFS-5, where double-indirect pointers exist to allow the unified 1MB file block size back a 2TB VMDK.

Office of the CTO Blogs: Why VDI is more Secure than Physical Desktops
There has been some interesting conversations recently at both BriForum and in the blogosphere about VDI and Security, the premise being that VDI is not more secure than other ways of running Microsoft Windows. I want to address that comment head on and unequivocally state that VDI has quite a few security benefits. Now, let me state up front that VDI does not make the Windows OS more secure, nor is it a panacea for every possible security threat in today’s world of interconnected systems. However, it is well known that security is best addressed with multiple layers of protection with multiple defenses and VDI is one such technology. In particular it improves security by enabling better isolation and controls over the environment in which the Windows system exists. The View VDI environment running centrally in the data center on vSphere, in concert with technologies like vShield, has significant security benefits over physical endpoints, particularly mobile laptops running natively. These benefits accrue even when both are “well-managed”.

Please join meon Thursday, August 16th at 8:00am PT as I talk about the Journey to full IT as a Service (ITaaS).Most people think that ITaaS stops at Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS), the reality of this is that simply providing a end-user portal for rapid provisioning really doesn’t help us solve the problems of legacy applications and frameworks.Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is not the end of the Journey to Your Cloud. Although IT Automation and Orchestration is critical to a successful ITaaS deployment, you need to modernize applications to make your business truly cloud ready. Application mobility is essential for business agility, simply virtualizing your J2EE stack or legacy applications isn’t enough. Join me to learn to modernize your applications for mobility and for the influx of Big Data.

Managing and Optimizing VMware vSphere® Deployments – new book
The Complete Guide to Planning, Deploying, and Operating High-Performance VMware vSphere 5 Virtual Infrastructure
New book by Sean Croockston (VCAP-DCA, VCAP-DCD) and Harley Stagner (VCDX 3 and VCDX 4) was released by VMware Press. The book is a guide to vSphere deployment and optimization.
In chapter 6 for example you’ll be able to see a Full case study, which explores the design from its inception to the implementation. You then explore the reasons for the design decisions along the way.

EMC – Using naviseccli to locate unused LUNs
I know I carry on like a bit of a pork chop when it comes to naviseccli – but I think some of the adulation is worth it. We’ve been trying to “reclaim storage” for a little while now (that’s code for not being allowed to spend money on additional capacity), and I’ve been looking for unused LUNs that may have been decommissioned and not unbound. To do this with naviseccli, use the getunusedluns command.

Zero Client Touch-Enabled Display Demo [Video]
Last week I blogged about my experiences using a GVISION 19?, a touch-enabled PCoIP Zero-Client LCD Display (Zero Client Touch-Enabled Display). Later on the week VMware SE Desktop Specialist, Bernie Cyplik, shared with me a video where he demonstrate how the touch enabled display could be used in a healthcare environment.

Deploying an Isolated Update Manager Download Service Architecture

During a recent customer engagement for a Virtual Infrastructure build out I was tasked with deploying an Isolated/Air Gap Update Manager Download Service architecture. If you do not know what an isolated Update Manager Download Service is then read this article first before carrying on. I came across a few hurdles during this deployment and so i waned to create a quick reference of what I followed for my future reference and to hopefully help anyone who gets the problems I was getting during the setup

AutoLab 1.0 released
Hi everyone, it’s Alastair again with more AutoLab news.  Today we have released version 1.0 of the AutoLab which is a huge leap.  As you may have seen on my Demitasse blog the AutoLab has a sponsor, Veeam are helping make the AutoLab better.  In AutoLab 1.0 we not only have the complete vSphere lab in a box but now also the ability to add Veeam Backup and Replication and Veeam ONE into the lab. This allows evaluation testing and training on these products without deploying onto your production vSphere.

Technical Whitepaper - Secure Segmentation of Tier 1 Applications in the DMZ
VMware vShield App (vShield App) is a centrally managed, stateful, distributed virtual firewall. It protects virtual machines by placing a stateful firewall filter on every virtual network adaptor. vShield App enables simple-to-use, non-disruptive implementation of network security in VMware vSphere environments. This document focuses on the use of vShield App to secure applications in the DMZ.

VMware Switch – What is it?
Horizon Mobile running on Android Mobile Phone.
Well not exacly, because the Horizon Mobile Manager runs as a VM in the datacanter and the VMware Switch is installed on the Android phone. VMware Switch is part of the infrastructure – the client, which enables you to use the phone as a platform to run enterprise applications.
To control the groups, users and data and access to internal company’s applications, you’ll be using the Horizon Mobile Manager. The Horizon Mobile has been already demoed the first time last year at VMworld 2011 where VMware has partnered with phone maker LG.

Why use storage for VDI?
The storage technologies and vendors available on the market today have definitely evolved from simple spindle RAID groups and one tier caching mechanism available from 5 years ago. The options are so many that it’s not only difficult to understand and grasp all different technologies, but almost impossible to compare them side-by-side.

VMware View fully virtualized GPU NVIDIA VGX [VIDEO]
The team at the Dell Solution Center recorded this video that demonstrate the power of the NVIDIA VGX virtualized GPU for VDI environment. In this video the display protocol in use is PCoIP.
NVIDIA VGX uniquely addresses the user experience issues of traditional VDI by adding a fully virtualized GPU board into each of your VDI hosts. This now enables up to one hundred users to share a VGX board with GPU-accelerated VDI (GPU-VDI). The result is high responsive windows, multimedia playback, and the ability to execute enterprise applications such as AutoCAD and Photoshop without performance issues. The technology literally convert any average desktop or thin-client into a graphical performance workstation.

Hello again everyone and welcome to my seventh post in our series The Support Outsider, a look into VMware from the point of view of an outsider (that's me), Intern Moses Masih.
This week I will use this idea to tell you about how I was able to start development in Drupal by simply downloading a pre-built virtual machine which was already fully configured and ready to develop.

Private VLAN (PVLAN) on vNetwork Distributed Switch - Concept Overview
This SlideRocket Presentation by our own Manish Patel provides a concept overview of Private VLANs. The Presentation defines what a PVLAN is and provides a diagram of how the Secondary PVLANs communicate. This presentation is also embedded in the Knowledge Base article Private VLAN (PVLAN) on vNetwork Distributed Switch - Concept Overview (1010691), which I recommend reading for the full text and definitions.

How to Purchase VMware Products
Hello again everyone and welcome to my series The Support Outsider, a look into VMware from the point of view of an outsider (me), Intern Moses Masih.

When monitoring Twitter I have often come across people asking questions about how they might buy a VMware product that they had downloaded to try out, and decided after kicking the tires, to purchase.

From the editors Virtual Desk
Hi everyone, hope you have all had a good week and enjoying the biggest sporting event in the world. I have had quite a busy week and have spent time looking at some VMware solutions for my customers that I have not had the chance to use in the past.

The first of these is Application Discovery Manager (ADM), I am still learning about this solution but suffice to say that it is one amazingly powerful solution to map out your application’s and all of their connections. Once you start to use this technology it is amazing what you find out about your environment. ADM is able to map connections to all of your systems and is particularly useful in a heterogenous environment with both virtual and physical servers still in play.

Continuing on this theme I have also started to work with VMware Infrastructure navigator (VIN). This solution is much easier to install and have up and running very quickly. It is targeted at your virtualised environment and can quickly start to map connections between all of your applications. One really useful feature is that if you are running SRM then it can discover the SRM resources and alert you to any potential issues should you require to fail over to your DR site but may have dependencies that are not part of the DR plan, quickly ensuring that your DR plan will actually work as required.

A busy week to say the least and I will be continuing with both of these solutions for the next few weeks and start to understand their role in the management and compliance stack for my customers.

Have a great week.

Best Wishes

Who Moved My App? VMware’s “Cheese-Aware” Application Management

Learn more about vFabric Application Performance Manager:

Did you ever read the book “

Who moved my cheese?” It was a 5-year New York Times Bestseller by Dr. Spencer Johnson.

The book speaks of how people react to change and offers several approaches to coping with change. The author, very eloquently, identifies the challenges of reacting and adapting to various changes in our lives.

In the book, Dr. Johnson helps us to understand that as we mature, we come to realize that change is constant: people change, schedules change, jobs change, friends change, and more. We are, for the most part, able to intellectually and emotionally cope and continue moving forward.

VMware on How Big Data Meets Fast Data in the Cloud

Big Data allows you to find opportunities you didn’t know you had.

Fast Data allows you to respond to opportunities before they’re gone.

The combination of Big Data and Fast Data working together may enable new business models you never could have achieved before.

To elaborate, the idea here is to analyze the historical "Big Data" and look for trends or patterns that have lead to good results in the past. Then you try to model those patterns in such a way that you can detect them as they are unfolding in real-time based on incoming Fast Data. If we could analyze large amounts historical as well as recent data quickly enough, we have an opportunity to influence the behaviors of the actors real-time, and have a better chance to steer them toward the patterns that produce results.

VMware Provider Guide: Help Customers Move Workloads to the Cloud (Part 1)

Enterprises small and large deploy public clouds with the goal of minimizing costs by decreasing IT infrastructure and increasing usage of a private cloud. However, some offerings in the market make it expensive and time-consuming for customers to make this transition to the cloud. At VMware, our vCloud Powered public clouds offer smoother workload transition with an easy-to-use approach and tools that customers are already familiar with.

VMware Provider Guide: Help Customers Move Workloads to the Cloud (Part 2)

In

Part 1 of this series, we walked through accessing the vCloud Connector user interface via the vSphere client. In Part 2, we’ll break down how to access the interface over the Internet using a standard Web browser.

Microsoft Lync 2010 with VMware View 5.0

There has been a lot of buzz and excitement last week around VMware’s announcement and plans to support Microsoft Lync 2013 (

http://blogs.vmware.com/euc/2012/07/microsoft-lync-2013-support-with-vmware-view-desktops.html).  With Microsoft Lync 2013 and VMware View, customers will have full access to Unified Communications and Collaboration capabilities, and Office 15 integration.

VMware View Client with Local Mode: Curious about how it works?

Do your virtual desktop users need to disconnect from the network, travel with their laptops, and use their virtual desktops offline? Or do you have a bring-your-own-computer (BYOC) program and want to install a corporate virtual desktop on users’ computers? VMware View Client with Local Mode is the answer for these user scenarios.

This blog post is about the clever workings of VMware View Client with Local Mode. This kind of information fascinates me, and if it fascinates you, read on.

Advanced VMkernel Settings for Disk Storage

As regular readers will know by now, many of these blog posts are a result of internal discussions held between myself and other VMware folks (or indeed storage partners). This one is no different. I was recently involved in a discussion about how VMs did sequential I/O, which led me to point out a number of VMkernel parameters related to performance vs fairness for VM I/O. In fact, I have seen other postings about these parameters, but I realised that I never did post anything myself.

NetApp and IBM both vMSC certified...

More and more storage vendors are certifying their stretched cluster solutions. Recently NetApp and IBM have both been added to the VMware HCL. Below you can find the links to the KB article which describe the supported configuration and the tested scenarios.

Implementing vSphere Metro Storage Cluster using IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller

vSphere 5.0 support with NetApp MetroCluster

Implementing vSphere Metro Storage Cluster (vMSC) using EMC VPLEX

Implementing vSphere Metro Storage Cluster using HP LeftHand Multi-Site

Those at the point of deploying a stretched cluster I would highly recommend reading these KB articles. Get as familiar as you can with the failure scenarios described, test them over and over again. This is key for operating a stretched cluster and will also give you a deep understanding of how your environment responds to failures.

VMware Employee DR Sessions at VMworld

As we're approaching VMworld I thought I'd write a quick post about the disaster recovery sessions being delivered by the VMware team this year.

Keep in mind, these are just the sessions being delivered by VMware staff, and just the DR sessions.  There is a lot more out there under the business continuity umbrella, including great sessions by our customers and partners, and exploring various topics such as data protection and high availability.

Upgrading to vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1a can fail when using an Oracle database

if your planning to upgrade to vCenter Server 5.0 Update 1a and use Oracle as the backend database you may want to check out the following KB before you proceed.

http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=2032277

There is a known issue that will show error: PLS-00905 STATS-ROLLUP2_PROC as invalid and prevent the upgrade from completing leaving you in an unusable state. Full resolution and recovery steps are described in the KB article

VMTN Blog: Why did you choose VMware?

We need your help. We're looking for a few people to share their stories with us. But we ask for people to share their stories all the time -- heck, we even have a

customer reference program to help you share your experiences. How is this different?

For one, we don't need a lot from you right now. We're not looking for a long commitment or permission from your management to do a

formal case study. We're actually just looking for you to jot down a few words.

vSphere PowerCLI Blog: Waiting for OS customization to complete

Provisioning of new virtual machines often includes Operating System (OS) customization.

A typical provisioning workflow could look like this:

1.  Clone a virtual machine from a template and specify a customization specification

2.  Start the VM. This triggers the customization process

3.  Wait for the customization to complete

4.   Perform additional setup steps

VMware Go Blog: The Importance of Patching Third-Party Applications

Almost every organization has a methodology in place for patching Microsoft applications.  And as every savvy IT security professional knows, patches close vulnerabilities, which is critical to keeping data and business processes safe.  It’s the same old security story: lock one door and the thief will find another – and now we’ve got the whole vulnerability/patch war extending beyond Microsoft to applications from other vendors like Adobe and Apple.

vSphere PowerCLI Blog: VMware and Cisco UCS Integration

One of the main areas of PowerShell that always impresses me is the integration of applications which were not designed to work together, it is often an overlooked and yet very powerful feature which enables products from the same company and even products from multiple companies to be glued together by Power

Shell and integrate data and automation actions to perform some fantastic integration.

vCenter Orchestrator Blog: It's Raining vCenter Orchestrator Plug-ins!

With

VMworld 2012 preparations and other ongoing work, this blog announcement was WAY overdue.  But as the saying goes... "better late than never!"

In response to many customer requests, we are glad to announce the availability of two new vCenter Orchestrator (vCO) plug-ins and several updates to existing ones:

1. The NEW

vCenter Configuration Manager workflow package allows organizations to automate compliance and patching operations around VM templates and guest operating systems.  A must-have... unless you have the time or enjoy doing this manually, one template at a time... ;-)

2.  The NEW

vCenter Chargeback Manager plug-in helps automate the on-boarding of new cloud customers and configuration of chargeback reports.  Try it today!

Workstation Zealot: We heard you. Quickly Download VMware Player.

We’ve received feedback that it’s too difficult and time consuming to download VMware Player.  No longer.  We’ve dramatically simplified the process.

1) go to

www.vmware.com/go/downloadplayer

2)  click the “download” button for the version of player you would like.

Office of the CTO Blogs: The Post-BlackBerry Era

In June 2010 Steve Jobs famously declared that the Post-PC era is upon us. Whether or not you agree with that statement, you will no doubt agree that smartphones and tablets have completely revolutionized how we use mobile devices. One of the profound changes in this paradigm shift is the impact on RIM – so in this note, I make the case that we are in the Post-BlackBerry era and discuss what that means to IT professionals.

Before I talk about the Post-BlackBerry era, it is important to understand how things were in the BlackBerry era, which I call the Pre-iPhone era.

VCP5-Infrastructure as a Service - Mock Exam

The VMware Certified Professional 5 – Infrastructure as a Service (VCP5-IaaS)

validates your ability to install, configure and administer a Cloud environment using vCloud Director and related components. Achieving this certification demonstrates your understanding of basic cloud concepts including public/private/hybrid clouds, multi-tenancy and cloud security, as well as your skills in using vCloud Director to create and manage vApps, service catalogs, and organization/provider VDCs, as well as administering cloud enabled networking and storage.

DaaS Scalability and Elasticity

Giving continuity to my recent Desktop-as-a-Service series it’s time to tackle those components that make a true DaaS solution be able to dynamically provision and de-provision resources on-demand, near real-time, without users having to engineer for peak loads.

This article is built on top of my previous DaaS articles:

VMware View Recompose and MAC Address

This week I answered to this question to someone on Twitter and then I saw it again at VMware internal forums.

-  How to persist MAC Address during recompose operations?

VMware Fling Boomerang Now supports PCoIP via VMware View

VMware Boomerang is a radically simple client application that allows you to use multiple vSphere servers simultaneously. Simply select “Add a Server…” to connect and login to an ESX server, vCenter server, or View Connection Server and you will be presented with a list of all available virtual machines.

Zero Client Touch-Enabled Display

For couple months I had a GVISION 19″ TFT LCD Display on my work desk. No, it was not my primary display, but it was nice to test it. This display is a Touch Enabled device that runs PCoIP natively using the Teradici chipset and connect directly to VMware View just like other PCoIP zero client displays. The difference is that this one is touch screen.

EMC – CX4 FAST Cache cosmetic issues and using /debug

I noticed that one of our CX4s was exhibiting some odd behaviour the other day. When looking at the System Information window, I noticed that FAST Cache seemed broken. Here’s a picture of it.

SRM and SwapFiles

A while ago I had Skype chat with

Greg Mulholland – he’s based in Melbourne, Australia where  he is a Senior Infrastructure Consultant specializing in VMware and Storage (NetApp primarily). Occasionally, I am approached on Twitter, LinkedIn and email to answer questions and queries – and so long as I have the time I will sometimes jump on Skype to discuss it personally.

Building VMware End-User Computing Solutions with VMware View Book

Phew. I know it’s a long title. But I wanted to shoehorn the word “end-user computing” and Barry wanted “VMware View” in the title – so this is the mash-up we can up with.

It’s our joint pleasure to finally make available the end-user computing book that myself, and fellow vExpert, Barry Coombs – have been work in on for sometime. We never thought when we embarked on the project that it would take this length of time. That was partly caused by us both having other projects on the table, and the review process colliding with the release of VMware View 5.1 and ThinApp 4.7.2. It was also delayed by my sojourns into other complementary technologies such as vShield, Teradici APEX, ThinApp Factory and Horizon Application Manager.

Multicore your vCPUs

Hello again everyone and welcome to my sixth post in our series The Support Outsider, a look into VMware from the point of view of an outsider (that's me), Intern Moses Masih

.

This week was busier than usual but I did come across a cool feature which you can try for your virtual machines. I want to talk about turning single core virtual machines into multicore machines in vSphere and Workstation.

While working on a new video that deals with setting cores in a virtual machine: Setting the number of cores per CPU in a virtual machine (1010184)

so that its operating system can recognise the machine as having multi-core CPUs, I found that this process can be used in vSphere and Workstation 8. I tried it and set my single core virtual machines to 4-core machines and also came across some useful details that I will talk about.

Purple Diagnostics Screen Articles

One thing you'll never see mentioned in a VMware Knowedgebase article is the term PSOD. Those ominous letters harken back to the blue screen crashes we all have seen on Windows based computers. In VMware, our dump screens have a magenta (purple) background, and so the lingo goes:

BSOD = Blue Screen Of Death

PSOD = Purple Screen Of Death

We really hate the negative connotations that these short-forms impart and much prefer to refer to these as purple diagnostics screens, because they do contain a great deal of information you can use to help diagnose the problem you have encountered. Here's what one looks like:

Hi everyone, I hope you are enjoying the new look newsletter. I have been hard at work trying to separate everything into distinct sections with a table of contents to try and make it really easy to find the section you are after. Please let me know if this is working for you, I have received feedback and constantly try and implement anything that will make the newsletter better for you.

Last week I attended my local VMware Solution Symposium and had the opportunity to see the enthusiasm and passion for the amazing company that I work for. it was so cool to see hundreds of delegates who had taken the day to come and spend time with us to see what is happening in the world of VMware and virtualization. Thank you to all who attended.

It is Olympics week, possibly the greatest sporting event on earth and I am really looking forward to some of the events. The opening ceremony looked amazing and I expect the rest of the games to be just as awesome.

Have a great week.

Installing Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) as a virtual machine in VMware Fusion 4
With the availability of Apple's latest addition to the Mac OS X family - Mountain Lion (watch the videohere) - which was announced earlier this week, we have started working on some new video tutorials specifically focusing on Mac OS X 10.8 in respect to our VMware Fusion product.
It will take us a few weeks to get these tutorials done and dusted. So, while you are waiting, here is a tutorial which demonstrates how to install Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) as a virtual machine in VMware Fusion 4. This video is based on the VMware Knowledge Base article Installing Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) as a virtual machine in Fusion 4 (2005334).

vFabric Web Server Improves Manageability with mod_bmx and More
Released in May as part of the VMware vFabric Suite 5.1, the latest version of VMware vFabric Web Server, VMware’s commercial web server (based on the popular Apache HTTP Server project), includes a number of improvements in the areas of manageability and security.  July heralds an incremental update version 5.1.1, with enhancements to security, mod_ssl and other components.

The engineering story behind vFabric Application Director: Enabling any app anywhere
Recently, VMware announced vFabric Application Director product to help deploy applications on public and private clouds. I have had the privilege of leading the engineering team that delivered this product, and am proud that we were able to build a tool that is truly open to the cloud, including all the application types and deployment locations that companies will want to service. Application Director meets not only current workload requirements that run within VMs, but is also open to enable future application stacks like Django, Ruby on Rails, NodeJS as well as noSQL and SQL databases. Likewise, it is open to deploy a variety of apps on variety of platforms—both public and private, including popular locations such as amazon and openstack. Most developers will recognize that building a product that is so flexible is not a trivial matter. However, we felt that not locking users into a single app stack or cloud environments was critical in order to not hinder application development. Giving developers the freedom of choice for application stacks while helping them keep their applications abstracted enough to land into the right production ready environments has been our guiding principal.

Another VMware Cloud – Publishers Clearing House Runs Its Hybrid Cloud on VMware
According to Darwin Bravo, Senior Manager of Online Infrastructure and Operations at Publishers Clearing House, “Partnering with Hosting.com has allowed us to take our VMware virtualization strategy to the next level, helping us to cut costs and enabling a hybrid cloud platform.”
Publishers Clearing House (PCH), headquartered in Port Washington, NY is a multi-channel direct marketer of value-based merchandise, magazines and promotional offers, as well as a leading provider of digital “Play & Win” entertainment. With an online network of more than 10 million unique monthly visitors, IT agility is essential in order to address extreme fluctuations in website traffic and ensure customer satisfaction.

vCloud Basics for IT Admins: Key Features
In my experience with speaking at conferences and creating video software training courses, one of the primary obstacles I must overcome when discussing VMware’s cloud computing solutions is assisting VMware Admins in understanding what “vCloud “ is.
Some people think vCloud is a third party public cloud solution. Some people think it creates private clouds. Some people think vSphere is vCloud. Because confusion is common, I thought I would write a short post explaining what vCloud is and key features VMware admins should be aware of when getting started with vCloud.

The Mid-Market Opportunity for Providers of VMware vCloud Powered Services
Attention VMware Service Providers – do you sell to mid-market customers? The SMB and mid-market is growing, with virtualization as a top initiative and cloud adoption trailing close behind.
Selling to the mid-market is a great opportunity for providers of vCloud Powered services, because Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) can be presented as an extension of customers’ existing VMware virtualization environments, or as a solution in place of on-site hardware. VMware Service Providers can leverage VMware virtualization leadership to sell cloud services based on a proven, compatible platform.

Microsoft Lync 2013 Support with VMware View Desktops
As VDI solutions such as VMware View gain market adoption and the technology evolves, continuing to offer end-users a PC like experience is important to sustain the upward growth trajectory. Automatically Securing Virtual Machines Using a vCenter Alarm
In a previous blog post, we demonstrated how you can easily automate the hardening of your Virtual Machines by using a PowerCLI or vSphere SDK for Perl script and apply the latest vSphere 5.0 Security Hardening Guide recommendations for your Virtual Machines. Now, this is great for securing your existing Virtual Machines, but what about new Virtual Machines that are created? Wouldn’t it be neat to have your Virtual Machines automatically secured after they have been created?

Path failure and related SATP/PSP behaviour
This question came up in a recent conversation about what happens in the Pluggable Storage Architecture (PSA) when there is a path failure. It basically describes the roles played by both the Storage Array Type Plugin (SATP) and the Path Selection Policy (PSP) when a path fails, resulting in I/O failing. When a virtual machine issues an I/O request to a storage device managed by the NMP (Native Multipath Plugin), the following steps take place:

Automatically Securing Virtual Machines Using vCenter Orchestrator
Here is another alternative to my previous blog post, which provides an automated way of hardening newly created Virtual Machines by leveraging an SNMP trap sent from vCenter Server to vCenter Orchestrator to execute a “Secure VM” workflow.

vSphere HA isolation response... which to use when?
A while back I wrote this article about a split brain scenario with vSphere HA. Although we have multiple techniques to mitigate these scenarios it is always better to prevent. I had already blogged about this before but I figured it wouldn't hurt to get this out again and elaborate on it a bit more.
First some basics...
What is an "Isolation Response"?

Enabling Password Free SSH Access on ESXi 5.0
I came across this question today:  “How do I setup password free SSH access to my ESXi hosts”.   A quick Google search turned up a lot of good info on this topic, but I didn’t find anything on the vSphere blog so I wanted to chime with a quick post, and hopefully add to what’s already out there.

Before VMware introduced VAAI (vSphere Storage APIs for Array Integration), migrations of Virtual Machines (and their associated disks) between datastores was done by the VMkernel Data Mover (DM).
The Data Mover aims to have a continuous queue of outstanding IO requests to achieve maximum throughput. Incoming I/O requests to the Data Mover are divided up into smaller chunks. Asynchronous I/Os are then simultaneously issued for each chunk until the DM queue depth is filled. When a request completes, the next request is issued. This could be for writing the data that was just read, or to handle the next chunk.

Admission control: "used slots" exceeds "total slots"
On the VMTN forum today someone asked how it was possible that the "used slots" exceeded the "total slots". This is what their environment showed in vCenter:

Office of the CTO Blogs: VMware and Nicira – Advancing the Software-Defined Datacenter
Today I am extremely excited to announce VMware’s acquisition of Nicira, a 5 year-old company that has pioneered software-defined networking (SDN) and is the leader in networking virtualization for heterogeneous infrastructure environments and clouds. When combined with the outstanding networking team and technologies already at VMware, I believe we have the same opportunity to do for networking what we’ve already done for servers and many other parts of the datacenter. In fact, the people, passions, ecosystem, and industry-transforming opportunity reminds me very much of the early days of VMware’s server virtualization efforts!

VMware Accelerate: When the Business Demands BYOD - How Can CIOs Say “Yes”?
The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) trend is changing the landscape of corporate IT and support model; with the proliferation of mobile devices, corporate networks are becoming more challenging to manage and more at-risk every day. Corporate IT is now forced to react and build a new end user-centric computing model because the days of a static, one-size-fits-all policy applied to company-owned assets are gone. Today, IT departments need to become more agile and adapt quickly to BYOD because it is already happening.

Office of the CTO Blogs: An Educated View of Innovation – VMware’s Academic Program
VMware has a unique offering to the academic community called the VMware Academic Program or VMAP.  We started the program in 2005 in response to a growing interest from academics to do virtualization research and instruction.   VMware’s roots in academia (we started at Stanford University) compelled us to do much more than sponsored research and education via licenses and courseware.  We now have a robust global program that spans many facets of academia.   Through this program, we continue to foster innovation in virtualization as well as broader systems areas.

Fight the FUD – Oracle Licensing and Support on VMware vSphere
I keep hearing stories from Customers and Prospects where Oracle appears to be trying to deceive them for the purposes of extorting more license money from them than they are legally required to pay. I also keep hearing stories of Oracle telling them they would not be supported if they virtualized their Oracle systems on VMware vSphere. This has gone on now for far too long and it’s time to fight back and stop the FUD!

Cool Tool - PowerShell WMI Extensions module
The PowerShell WMI Extensions module is a project that I wish I had started as soon as PowerShell 2.0 was released in 2009. It has been in development since late 2011, after I had been working on my pspx module for many months, and it is one of the most ground-breaking modules I have ever produced. The purpose of this module is simple: to auto-generate advanced functions that look and feel like cmdlets, complete with rich parameters, help documentation, examples, remoting support, security customizability support, and everything that you would expect from top-notch PowerShell commands by harvesting the rich data that is stored inside WMI, reducing as much as possible (or ideally eliminating) the need to dig through WMI documentation or to use more complicated WMI cmdlets to manage your infrastructure.

EMC – Using naviseccli to change the LUN Migration priority of a LUN
I am currently working through a metric shitload of LUN migrations on one of our CX4 arrays, with the end-goal being a replacement of 60 or so 300GB FC disks with 60 600GB FC disks. This is the sort of stuff you have to do when you’re not allowed to buy new arrays (budget notwithstanding). But enough moaning.

Understanding VXLAN and the value prop in just 4 minutes…
I already shared this video through twitter, but I love it so much I figured I would blog it as well. In this video VXLAN is explained in clear understandable language in just four minutes. We need more videos like these, fast and easy to digest!

What’s (not so) new in vSphere5 – Part6 (Deploying ESXi5)
vSphere5 introduced a brand new way to deploy the hypervisor – ESXi5 to the physical machine. There’s still the option to install to storage – be that USB/SD-Card, DAS, or boot-from-SAN – but a new feature called “Auto-Deploy” has been developed to allow the booting of the hypevisor across the network using PXE booting. This should allow for “state-less” ESX host – and make it very easy to deploy a new rack of servers or replace a dead server. It also means that the ESX host can be totally diskless with its state being delivered on demand as it boots, rather than being “stored” as configuration files on the host itself.

EMC – renaming the CX4 SP using natest.exe
We recently had to convert some old CX4-480s to 960s and rename them. For some reason we couldn’t change the names on the SPs or get them to join the Unisphere domain properly. EMC Support used a very useful tool called natest.exe to rename the SPs via a RemotelyAnywhere session. Here’s how to do it. Obviously you should use this tool with caution and only if instructed by support.

DaaS Mobility and Portability
One of the fundamental concepts behind cloud-based workloads is Mobility & Portability. Mobility & Portability have been continually discussed over the years and we finally see cloud providers offering solutions to import/export workloads from/to their clouds.

Site Recovery Manager survey… please help us out!
I just received an email from the the Site Recovery Manager Product Management team. They created a new survey, and I was hoping each of you who is using, or will be purchasing SRM soon, could take the time to complete it. These types of surveys are very useful for Product Management when it comes to setting priorities for new features and identify gaps etc. Thanks!
We are conducting a survey about VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM) to learn more about how people use our products. The survey will help us identify where we can improve the product to meet your needs and we would really appreciate getting your feedback.
The link to the survey is below, it typically takes less than 10 minutes to complete.http://www.surveymethods.com/EndUser.aspx?ECC8A4BDEDA6B9BAE7

System Center 2012 “Cloud in Your Pocket”; More Lies Ahead
Earlier this year at Microsoft Management Summit 2012, attendees were given USB flash drives loaded with copies of System Center 2012 products and the myriad dependencies needed for a chance at a successful deployment.  Brad Anderson was quick to praise this technological breakthrough, despite his apparent unfamiliarity with the nuances of a System Center 2012 private cloud deployment, and went on to give this idyllic description of the process in the keynote:

VMware Workstation 8 as a Server
Hello again everyone and welcome to my sixth post in my series, The Support Outsider - a unique look into VMware from the point of view of an outsider (that's me), Intern Moses Masih.
This week I am going to briefly talk about a very useful feature of VMware Workstation that I came across this past week.
My first introduction to Workstation came in college where one of my friends had it on his computer and I saw a few things that it offered but had never gotten my hands on the product until I started working at VMware. Installing workstation was very easy and I was easily able to understand how it works on my own from playing around with it.

Understanding the Storage Path Failover
This presentation follows along the VMware ESX/ESXi 4.x and 5.0 storage multi-pathing failover sequence, as it is logged on ESX Classic and ESXi.
For more information be sure to consult the KB articles referenced in the presentation.

Will VMware Fusion run on OSX Mountain Lion?
If you're a Mac user you probably were eager to download and install the latest iteration of Mac OSX, labelled Mountain Lion. If you're like me, you paid your $20 bucks, waited for the download to complete and the minute it did, you launched the installer without any thought to what applications you might be breaking. I'm as guilty of this behavior as the rest, and as soon as my machine rebooted, there it was staring at me on the dock -- a VMware Fusion launcher with a big overlay on top of it apparently indicating this application will no longer run.
