Hi everyone, well it is TAM Day 2011 in Brisbane this week. I am really excited about this event and look forward to it every year. It is such a good opportunity for me and my fellow VMware colleagues to spend the day with our most valued TAM customers.

In 2 weeks time we will also have the VMware User Group Summit in a number of cities including Brisbane which I will be attending and really looking forward to.

I have spent quite a bit of my time in the past week on VMware vCenter Operations Manager Enterprise, assisting my customers with a proof of concept for this. I am really excited about this solution and what it will bring to the data center and watching this technology in anticipation of a new release next year.

I will be doing a blog posting on the APJ TAM Blog site on vCenter Operations and operations in general in the near future, this week my blog posting is on my thoughts on Disaster Recovery.

This week’s featured article is on VMware Horizon App Manager, take a read this is an amazing solution.

Take care until next time everyone and enjoy the newsletter.

VMware End User Computing: VMware Horizon Application Manager Now With Windows App Management!

VMware Blogs 16/11/11 11:00 PM

By Ben Goodman, lead evangelist, VMware Horizon, VMware

One of VMware’s primary goals for VMware Horizon Application Manager is to provide users the best possible quality of experience when running all their applications regardless of device, operating system or network. As part of our journey to provide this, we are taking our application management capacity to a new territory,  Microsoft Windows applications.

Today we are excited to announce that we have integrated VMware Horizon Application Manager with VMware ThinApp (more information on this can be found on the ThinApp blog) to provide the most comprehensive solution for managing virtualized applications on Windows.

Fast, Easy and Secure Windows applications
Mobile “app stores” are a favorite of end users because of their ease of use. Users browse an app catalog to find the apps they desire and with a single click, download, entitle and install the app to their device. Later, a few clicks can cleanly remove the app from the device.

VMware Horizon Application Manager and ThinApp work together to bring the same type of user experience to the Windows Platform. Horizon Application Manager provides users with an administrator configured, single application catalog combining the SaaS and Windows apps they need. A single click can allow apps of a both types to be available within the Horizon Workspace instantly.

How does it work?
The first step was to extend the capabilities of Horizon Application Manager. Horizon utilizes an on-premise connector, which integrates with Active Directory. This allows Horizon Application Manager to leverage your existing logins and credentials. This Connector now has a service that will query ThinApp repositories. The connector will read ThinApp metadata into Horizon Application Manager, making these apps available as part of an organization’s Horizon application catalog alongside existing SaaS app.

Next, we added a Horizon agent to Windows. Horizon Application Manager aims to provide a native device experience to end users in addition to the option of leveraging the horizon browser-based workspace. Windows will be the first platform to receive a native operating system experience through Horizon. Now, via our windows agent, Horizon Application Manager can display icons for either ThinApp based applications or for web based SaaS applications on the desktop or the “Start Bar”. Providing end-user the experience they have come to expect when interacting with Windows applications. A double click of any of the icons will launch the appropriate application through Horizon Application Manager.

Apps are entitled in real-time to a user within Horizon Application Manager via Active Directory groups or attributes and show up in the appropriate location on the Windows desktop.  Removing an application entitlement for a user in Horizon Application Manager will result in them losing their icon and the ability to launch the application immediately. This eliminates time the consuming discovery process and provides assurance to IT management.

By integrating VMware ThinApp and  VMware Horizon Application Manager our customers get unique capabilities. Administrators can now configure associated application licensing and cost within Horizon, creating a centralized place to track application usage and expense. Administrator can monitor usage of windows applications and not only understand who is entitled to an application, but monitor ongoing usage of those applications.

The solution
VMware Horizon Application Manager is your turnkey application-management solution providing cloud-identity control, to secure and  manage access to all your applications regardless of the platform. By adding virtualized Windows application support via VMware ThinApp, Horizon has taken a significant step to achieve this.

The result is a simple, fast and secure way for end users to access all their applications. Learn more or request a trial by going to:http://www.horizonmanager.com/

vCO Team: Unattended deployment of vCenter Orchestrator Appliance

The vCO appliance makes it very easy to deploy vCenter Orchestrator in minutes. My colleague William Lam went a bit further with providing a script that let you pre-define a lot of the configuration settings.

The script leverage the OVF format to set a number of parameters such as the appliance network settings, placement on the virtual infrastucture datastores and network.

You can find out more about it here.

VMware vCloud Blog: Getting Started with the vShield API

In order to best explain how to get started using the vShield API, I'm going to introduce a hypothetical example of an implementation using “Alice,” a Network and Security System Administrator at the company, “Rainpole Systems.” This is the first in a five-part blog series on using the vShield API.

VMware vCloud Blog: Automation tools with vShield App for scalability through REST APIs: Part 1

In my last blog, I introduced a hypothetical situation using a Network and Security System Administrator at the company, “Example Systems,” in order to best describe how to get started with the vShield API. Their company intends to use vShield REST API to rapidly provision security and turn CodeNebulous' Tier-1 Application into a business offering to multiple organizations. The Network and Security System Administrator has already learned some basic principles about REST and the vShield API and is now ready to use Automation tools with vShield App for scalability through REST APIs.

VMware Alliances Team: The Dell Management Plug-in for VMware vCenter Server – Enabling a Single-Pane-of-Glass Management Interface

In this edition, we are blogging about another great duo: Dell Server Management and VMware vCenterTM  Server.

In December of 2010, Dell introduced our virtual appliance, called the Dell Management Plug-in for VMware vCenter (DMPVV), which bridged the physical and virtual gap by integrating key physical server management capabilities into vCenter Server. DMPVV delivers a “single-pane-of-glass” management interface for both virtual machines and Dell servers within vCenter Server that frees Dell and VMware customers from having to switch back and forth between multiple consoles to accomplish server element management. Our latest edition: 1.0.1 Update 1 shipped in September of 2011 and adds support for vSphere 5.

VMware Networking Blog: VDS Best Practices - Design Considerations

After a long break I am back again on this forum. Over the last couple of months I was busy interacting with various customers as part of the VMworld US and Europe conferences and trying to understand how customers are deploying distributed switch in their environment. I have also spent lot of time internally talking to VMware R&D engineers as well as Field experts (SEs and PSOs) on what guidance we would like to provide to our customers regarding the deployment of vSphere Distributed Switch (VDS). After all these discussions, I have come up with some guidelines or best practices that customers have to consider while deploying VDS. These guidelines or best practices are discussed with reference to a sample example deployment. It is important to note that the suggestions/guidelines discussed here are based on the assumptions of the example deployment. Every customer environment is different as well as customer needs are different, and customers have to take that into account while designing the virtual network infrastructure using VDS. VDS is a flexible platform that can support different requirements from different customers.

ESXi Chronicles: Tracking VM Tools and Virtual Hardware Versions

I was recently looking for a quick way to verify that all my VMs have been updated with the latest versions of tools and virtual hardware.  I was thinking I would need to use a PowerCLI or vCLI script to do this, but was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that I can easily get this info from the vSphere client.

Repeated characters when typing in your VMs remote console?

Today I was working on a couple of test scenarios in a remote lab. For some reason the latency was a lot higher than normal and I was very difficult to type anything in the Remote Console through the vCenter Client. Every single character I tried popped up 2 or 3 times… which makes it very difficult to type a password as you can imagine. I knew I read a KB article about this exact problem a long time ago. Considering it is KB 196 I probably wasn’t the first to bump in to this. The solution is fairly simple:

I was playing around with vShield App and I locked out my vCenter VM which happened to be hosted on the cluster which was protected by vShield App. Yes I know that it is not recommended, but I have a limited amount of compute resources in my lab and I can’t spare a full server just for vCenter so I figured I would try it anyway and by breaking stuff I learn a lot more.

Yesterday I showed how to recover from a vShield App crash. Now bare in mind that this scenario is very rare. Today I decided to lock down my environment to the level where it was impossible to login to vCenter Server or vShield Manager. I added L2 and L3 “Any – Any” block rules to the Datacenter which hosts vCenter and vShield Manager. I needed to get access back to my vCenter host so I started digging and this is how I managed to get it back… it was a lot easier then expected:

Whilst testing a Thinapp today I noticed that every time I ran the Thinapp a file related to that software package was being created in the Thinapp bin directory. This isn't something that I want to happen. The file created was named the same as the ComputerName of the vm it was being excecuted on. So as you can imagine, if you have desktop estate of 10,000 desks, it could get quite missy.
