Currently i am using Whats Up Gold to monitor servers and SNMP-Informant is the snmp agent installed on the servers.

At this time, the only 2 things i need to monitor on the vm clients is ping (up or down) and drive space.

i have been getting outage alerts because no data is returned on the drive space monitors, causing it to appear "down"

Is it possible to monitor drive space on a vm client using snmp? if so, can someone explain how?

Thanks
SDOG

I use SNMP to monitor all of my virtual machines and all of my host machines. What guest O/S's are you using? Is there any reason you can't use the SNMP agent that's included with the O/S? I use the Windows SNMP agent on my Windows VMs and net-snmp on my Linux VMs and everything works fine. The Windows SNMP agent supports drive space monitoring, as does net-snmp.

you may want to check out net-smtp + mrtg, it can provide graphing/logging of just about every system event you can think of.

cacti is also a good product, just do a google search for those products and you'll find ton's of howto's and docs explaining the process.

I use Cacti quite extensively and am very happy with it.

I don't know. It may be the What's Up Gold uses different MIBs or different monitoring than standard SNMP - I don't know anything about that product. As far as VMware goes, there's nothing special required for monitoring either the host or guest systems. As I stated before, I use SNMP on both my host and guest systems - without any special setup - and it works fine. I use the built in SNMP agent on Windows guests and the net-snmp agent on Linux hosts and guests. Aside from configuring the correct communities and allowed hosts, I don't have to do anything special.

Are you using NAT or Host only networking or do your hosts have Bridged connections?

By VM client do you mean the VMware Virtual Machines or the SNMP agent running in the VM's?

Does Event Viewer (hosts and guests) have anything to say about why SNMP is failing?

This sounds like your SNMP agent is doing something bad, or you have a problem with something on your host. Starting a simple service like SNMP should not cause everything else on the system to crash, and certainly shouldn't affect VMware's ability to run.
