VCB and NetBackup

Can anyone point me to a useful document (I already have the VMware pdf admin guides) that walks you through the deployment of VCB using netbackup. Set of netbackup would be ideal, pre / post scripts, the integration module, any special config of VCB for Netbackup etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks all.......

Also, can anyone tell me where I can get the readme file from for the integration module? I am waiting on someone else to get the software and would like to read through it before I get started.

Thanks again!

Hi,

does anyone have a short tutorial or document, how to install a backup solution with VCB (1.0.3) and NetBackup? With the main problems and for what I have to attend to?!

Please post a link or if someone can send me a document....

Thx for help.

Make sure you read and follow the install guide -->> http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vi3_vm_backup.pdf

It explains how VCB works.

The diskpart automount disable / automount is very important. The integration module includes a pretty good readme file as well.

A big thing is to understand how the bpstart_notify and bpend_notify scripts work in NBU and how the pre-freeze and post-thaw scripts work in VMware tools. From there, you can customize things.

Hi

Install VCB ---> Do Automount disable and the SAN related configuration before having the VCB presented the SAN LUN's

Its available in the VCB Configuration guide

Install Netbackup and ensure the version / service pack is updated

Install Net backup Remote Administration console and ensure you have the admincmd folder . These include various .exe required for the integration

Install VCB software ---> Copy the Netbackup integration module and set the path by running install.bat file

Go through the readme.html file under the netbackup integration folder.

You shld be set for everything.....If you find this reply satisfactory please award some points...If u need more resources I can also send you the same. Thanks

Hey limey,

did you get any valuable information that you can share? In the process of trying to integrate VCB 1.03 and NetBackup 5.1. I have ran sample scripts to test VCB and it is working, we are having some issues tying it into NB.

Thanks for any things you may have learned.

When running the bpstart_notify, there is an error when making the call to pre-command.bat

echo backup started on %1 using policy %2, bpres = %6 >> bin\BP_RES.txt

call "%VCBBASE%\netbackup\pre-command.bat" %2

echo %errorlevel% > %6

Am I missing something?

This is what I get when running the bpstart.

C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin>echo backup started on using policy , bpres = 1>>bin\BP_RES.txt

The system cannot find the path specified.

C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin>call "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework\netbackup\pre-command

The syntax of the command is incorrect. Invalid command line arguments specified.

Log from %temp%

Invalid command line arguments specified.

I know I am missing a variable/user input somewhere.

THANKS for any direction on this.

Have you completed the config.js file properly?

The config.js in the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework\config folder is configured properly, as I can run a backup job using just a VCB script. I.e.,

REM

cscript pre-command.wsf "c:\program files\vmware\vmware consolidated backup framework" "prc205tst" fullvm

THe config.js in the C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Consolidated Backup Framework\netbackup folder should be as there are only a few variables. I did add the the path for the installation directory.

( VNBU_INSTALL_PATH="C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup";) even though you should not have to as it states it defaults to the NORMAL path or pulls it from the registry.

not sure why the "winky" was put into my entry below. Smiley Happy

I guess the semi-colon was Interpreted as that?

I apparently did not have the config.js configured correctly. Pay attention to the examples. You DO need the "
" (double backslash).

BACKUPROOT="E:
mnt"; The quotations are important as well!

So much for doing a Copy + Paste to avoid any typos in the path! Smiley Happy

One thing to be careful of is if you are using NetBackup 6.5 or above, the VMware NetBackup Integration Module is not used or required. In fact, the VMware NetBackup Integration Module can prevent backups from working properly when using NetBackup 6.5 or above. The VMware NetBackup Integration Module is still used with NetBackup 6.0 or older.

There are a couple of documents that might be of help here. There is a NetBackup technote that describes configuring NetBackup 6.5.1 with VMware. It can be found here:

http://entsupport.symantec.com/docs/293350

There is also a NetBackup for VMware Best Practices guide that can be found here:

http://www.symantec.com/business/products/whitepapers.jsp?pcid=2244&pvid=2_1

HTH.
