You should be able to use the Launcher (Applications > Launch) or click on the applications menu. If you have no windows in Unity mode, clicking on the Launch menu brings up the launcher. You should be able to use the drop down in the search field (click the magnifying glass) to select the correct vm. This should make sure the applications menu and the launcher are targetting the correct VM.

You should be able to choose Shutdown in the Virtual Machine menu. The power operations are located there.

I can (probably) learn to live without the "Start" bar in Unity, but only if you give me access to the Window-key shortcuts. I use the "Start" bar for things like firing up a command prompt, using Run... to start regedit or taskmgr, opening a new explorer window, getting to control panels, etc. I can do all of those things with shortcuts, but only if the Window-key works!

I do feel like the start menu access should be made easier.

The Launcher is weired to use because it puts everything on one level. And if there's only one VM running shouldn't it be selecting the only VM by default?

The applications menu is easier and more intuitive to use when compare to Launcher, but the arrangement of the menu items seem to be random, and not following any particular order. It should be made to be listed alphabetically.

Also the current start menu options are only available when either Fusion or the Luncher windows are in focus. VMware should put an icon on the Apple menu bar that acts as a 'start' button so the star menu is accessible regardless of the window focus. And if multiple VMs are presented then the 1st level of the menu bar can be a list of VMs, then the regular windows menu starts at the 2nd level. Graphical application icons would be a nice plus too.

This sounds great!

RC is somewhat an improvement but I would love to get access to the whole start bar in Unity. I access frequently system tray items or bring up minimized windows rapidly. This would be a great improvement (for me anyway!)

We were given instructions on how to keep the task bar visible in unity. Look at the Sticky that announcing RC1. Here is what you need to do:

A new hidden option to always show the Windows task bar in Unity. To
enable the task bar always:
1) In the Windows guest, go to: C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Application Data\VMware\VMware Tools. NOTE: The Application Data
folder won’t be visible unless Windows is set to display hidden files and
folders in Windows Explorer.
2) Open tools.conf in Notepad.
3) Add the following line unity.showTaskbar = "true" and save and close
the tools.conf file. Restart your Windows guest.
4) Next time you enter into the Unity view, VMware Fusion will show the
Windows task bar.

I agree. I'd like to see at least some way (via icon/button/hotkey etc.) to easily get at the Start menu.

I've tried to use the applications/launcher gizmo, but I just can't get used to it. I end up not finding the app I'm looking for, and switch out of unity.

Edit:
I'll try the workaround and see what happens.

I just tried it, and it works. if you have the standard quick launch items on the taskbar, click the "Show Desktop" link. It will show your Windows desktop (and any files/folders/shortcuts) underneath the Mac menu/dock.
