Is there a plan to allow the use of more than 2 CPU's in ESX server for a virtual machine. I am looking at virtualising an ERP system onto some high end HP servers and I require them to run with more than 2 CPUs, how soon can we expect to see this capability ?

Hey there,

You ask all sorts of loaded questions, Big Al :)

This is another one of those that I can't answer speficically, but that I can be sufficiently vague about.

ESX Server (with the virtual SMP add-on) is capable of supporting up to TWO virtual CPU's.

Being able to support more virtual CPU's (such as 4, 8, or even 16) is a major feature enhancement. We are working on this feature right now.

Where there is a business case to do so, usually VMware is acting.

Unfortunately, I cannot share with you any timeline in which we are going to release this support, as even I am not positive.

I'll share more with you on this feature request as I am able to reveal more information.

This would be a welcome enhancement in our environment as well.

We don't usually use more that 4-way boxes for any of our servers and even those are usually underutilized. If there was at least a 4-way CPU version of ESX, that would take care of all our environment and allow us to use VMware for our disaster recovery environment.
