I've run the vmware workstation 6 beta under Vista x64 (it works) -- but any news on vmware server supporting vista x64 host (with networking & usb)

Yeah, I am having problems installing it in Vista Ultimate x64. gets right to the end and then rolls back, classic device driver signing issue it appears. I was able to get the VM player working, so I can continue to run my VMs, but it's nowhere near ideal.
