Ubuntu does NOT have a root account/root password set by default.  Just sudo and use your own password.

Re: Ubuntu 6.10 "Edgy" Server Edition

With Ubuntu it's recommended that you use sudo and not a root account.

If you really want to use the root account, you can open a terminal windows and type the following from the command line

sudo passwd root

I've just booted this appliance and it asks for a username and password.

How do I find out the username and password to use?

Taken from the VMTN page...

"Primary account

Username: ubuntu

Password: ubuntu"

Re: Ubuntu 6.10 "Edgy" Server Edition

I just loaded the VM Player and Ubuntu 6.1 Server but it starts in a terminal mode and not in a graphical mode.

I can't "init 5" or startx or anthing without it asking me for a root password (which is NOT "ubuntu").

How do I get to see the Graphical interface for Ubuntu in this appliance?  Please let me know the root password or how to set it if it's needed as well.  Thanks.

Re: Ubuntu 6.10 "Edgy" Server Edition

Well, seeing as this is called a "Server Edition", then most likely X is NOT installed.  If you do a "Server Installation" on most Linux distros, it will not install X Windows.

Re: Ubuntu 6.10 "Edgy" Server Edition

I can't get a network connection with this VM. When I try:

sudo /sbin/ifup -a

I get:

SIOCSIFADDR: No such device

eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device

eth0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device

Bind socket to interface: No such device

Failed to bring up eth0.

On the top of the VM where the ethernet icon is, the checkmark is next to Connected, and the setting below that is "Bridged". I have another VM (built on Gentoo) in which the net works, but this Ubuntu server doesn't seem to. Any suggestions?

Re: Ubuntu 6.10 "Edgy" Server Edition

nevermind - this post here:

http://www.vmware.com/community/message.jspa?messageID=528967#528967

says to comment out the line in /etc/iftab - after I did that and rebooted the VM, eth0 works
