Simply open the .VMC file and VMware Workstation, Server, or Player will start the virtual machine for you.

When I try to "Download this appliance" I get this error:

The download you requested is unavailable. If you continue to see this message when trying to access this download, go to the "Search for a Download" area on the Download Center home page.

Could somebody please fix the link

I also get the "this file or download not available" type message.

That is true for all the Microsoft hosted VM Appliance links - 649, 650,
651 (Windows Server 2003, Exchange Server, SQL/Server VM
Appliances).

What is Microsoft's policy here - did they remove these? Is it allowable/
conforming with their license to use a VMWare Windows image?

Did you try with IE?

could download the File, but can neither convert it with Converter 3.0 nor open in VMWare Server. Did MS change the image, so it's no more usable in Vmware?

I've tried the MS appliances as well, from both Firefox and IE... No Go! it seems that MS has pulled the VMware appliances completely... Can someone from MS please confirm/elaborate?

Hi,

I'm using vmware-server 1.0.3 - linux tar.gz version - and it doesn't recognize the format.

What must I do to make it work?

Thank you.

The current VMDs for some reason don't convert using the built-in importer of Server. I haven't tried Workstation6, but the only way I've been able to use any of the current MS appliances is to start them in VirtualPC or Virtual Server, then run VMWare Converter on the "physical machine." (Using Converter 3.0.1 Starter on the non-running MS appliance doesn't work.)

Hi all,

I just install VMware server 1.0.3 in Windows XP (english).
And download the "Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition VHD" from Microsoft. As the vmware website say that it can open this Windows 2003 server with vmc file, I just do what they say.

However, when I open the vmc (WS03R2EE.vmc ), it fails to import the VM and display the error "the WS03R2EE.vmc cannot be opened".

Please help. What should I do to make it work? Thanks.

Additional info: The machine I was using to run Converter3 was having problems when I first posted that info. Converter3.0.1 did work correctly on MS Win2k3 appliances. But you must use Converter3 or Workstation6, which uses Converter3. The importer built in to Server 1.x does NOT import the VHDs correctly.

I just download the vhd from microsoft.

When I try to open/import with vmware workstation 6.0 or vmware converter 3.0.1 it says that "Unable to determine Guest Operating System".

Any suggestions?

Is it because of new vhd format with new virtual PC?

Happens sometimes. Hot clone works more often than a cold clone. Run the VHD inside of MS VPC or VS and install Converter inside of that. Then run Converter in the VM.
