I tried to update the packages in core 6 with the package manager, but received an error message that the disk space was insufficent. My question is, how do I increase or allocate more disk space to the Fedora core 6 image under the VMWare player. My host operating system (Windows XP) has plenty of space and I would like to add another Gig to the VMWare image. How would I go about that?

TIA,

Under Player, you cannot. You need either Workstation, GSX Server, or VMware Server to use the vmware-vdiskmanager utility to expand the virtual disk. Your other option is to create and add a 2nd disk to the VM, and use that for additional storage.

Thanks for the suggestion, expanding the Virtual disk works just fine in my instance, I took it up to 10Gb, it still reports that it has only 3.9Gb. When I look at the appliance console, and check the settings it reports a 10Gb partition as it should. I found that the 3.9Gb partition still prevails when I tried to perform an update, and also on the disk analyzer. Help!!!

Hey, not sure how it was created now !! (with regards to space) as well as not sure what you have done. From what I recall the root directory probably has no room left so you need to add the allocated space to the root directory (sda1 or hda1 - just do a df -h in the terminal). Another way is to follow this guide http://www.vmware.com/support/reference/common/virtual_disks.html a little fiddly but it may help you...

Thanks for creating this appliance. It looks great and is the first Fedora I have found that has a working vmware tools.
Problem is this operating system is quite un-usable due to the fact that the disk arrives nearly full.
I just spent the last 18 hours discovering how to expand the disk size and still can't get it to work.
First step was to use vdiskmanager to increase it to 15GB. That worked fine. Then Fedora reported unused partition.
I used 'parted' to allocate the new space to partition 4 with ext3 file system.
The next step was to download 'gparted' to resize the main partition 2 (/dev/sda2) to 14GB. Can't get 'gparted' to compile in the appliance though (error: XML::Parser perl module is required for intltool)

If only the appliance could be built with growable disk at least 10 to 15Gb.
Guess the main issue here is that linux just doesn't have the nice file system tools that are available under Windows.

Hey glad you like it & I will take your points on board for next time. Have you tried the Gparted LiveCD then boot of the CD & resize from there?
