In VI3, the VirtualCenter/VI Client displays the Networks/VLAN IDs presented on a trunked network interface. In my environment, we have a large number of networks allowed and it appears to cut them off so I can't see them all or sometimes it is presented inconsistantly (different order) among matched NICs.

Does anyone know (A) how it enumerates/discovers this information and (B) how I can access it from the service console?

Mike

I've also wondered how ESX gets this information. I spoke our network guy and he said he's not aware of any "polling" that can be done to determine allowed VLANs.. but I have seen ESX pick up additional VLANs that are added to the trunked port.

From other topics here ESX is looking at the broadcast traffic on the interfaces to try and determine the subnets available on that interface. This isn't always accurate and is meant to just be a hint to what networks can be seen.

As to accessing it from the COS, I'm not sure you can. Though, you might check out some of the options on the esxcfg- scripts that handle NICs and vSwitches to see if they have options to provide that.

Those weren't the topics I'd read before about this, though one I posted similar information in. There was one topic, this one, that has some nice information in it. There is a post by a VMware employee that sums it up nicely.

what mstahl75 says is true. we just look at broadcast frames to gether the info. the vmkernel has the complete table, but I don't believe there is any way for you to access more than what the UI shows, which may be truncated. you could file a feature request SR to have that added.
