Hi Mike,
Have you tried /etc/init.d/vmware-webAccess stop ?
If that doesn't work you could disable CIMHttpServer and CIMHttpsServer services in the firewall, not sure whether this would affect the VI client though, haven't tried it.
And yes, you're right, the web access is a bit on the slow side....but then it's running on Tomcat, so what did you expect?
