Excellent tool for Windows admins with little to no *nix experience. I had no problem getting it running in 5 minutes. It took up little to no resources on an existing server. I saw no performance impact. I highly recommend this vmware appliance.

At minimum I would like to see info posted on how to :

1. How do you auto start the vmware player at system boot and auto point it to the DansGuardian "squid.vmx" file. - without a user logging into the server. currently if the physical server gets rebooted then you as the admin have to start the vmware player and pick the .vmx file to start.

2. integrate Active Directory authentication with DansGuardian and IE proxy settings

3. have reports show the username and/or computer name instead of IP
I’ve tried changing the following settings under DG “View\Edit Config” without success.
a) Username Identification (Proxy Auth)
b) Username Identification (Identd)
c) Reverse Client IP Lookups

3. flush the report logs of all browsing history to start reporting from scratch. I went through the DG and Squid settings with no luck hunting and pecking.

Is there a forum I can go to get this info?

You need to convert Player to run as a Service, via SrvAny or similar application in order to do this. As far as starting, all you should need is a shortcut to the vmx file - Your OS should have associated those with Player already. The easier, IMO, answer is to use the also free VMware Server, which allows you to set VMs to load as Services on system boot, etc.

I'm having trouble unzipping any of the downloads of this appliance. I've tried both with and without Webmin as well as the split version. I've tried WinRar as well as the built-in zip functionality in XP and both report a corrupt archive for all three downloads.

What am I missing? Thanks for any ideas!

Another thing is regarding the sarg, I want to have the squid-reports published without going to webmin... anyone has an idea?
and regarding Clam AV , does anyone know of a graphical way to see the AV reports? updates, virus blocking reports , etc..?

does the clamd auto update?

Dear Sir,

Your Post is very nice and i am trying to some changes according to my system like i need to run this on my physical hard disk on 250 gb and i need to make this a real high performance server but to do this i am facing so many problems is it possible that you submit a complete post that how you will install this and configure it in VM and how to we install in physical disk while we use VM ?

To Do this you can use Camtasia Studio is a number one you make your complete movie file and save in his own extension so it will be easy for all .

waiting for your early reply,

Sincere Regards,
Rockey

Hi folks,

I hope someone sees this. I am somewhat new to the vmworld and loving this technology. One of the first things I decided to play with is virtual appliances in Vmware Server. I downloaded the squid webmin version of the appliance with dansgaurdian. Very simple to setup as it is blocking the specific sites etc. The problem I am having is that in the instructions it makes mention on how to access the reporting functionality by typing your ip address which min eis https://10.0.0.99/squid-reports
Did anyone else have this issue?? I made the appliance satic via the netconfig command etc. How do I access these reports?

I get the following:

ERROR

The requested URL could not be retrieved

While trying to retrieve the URL: 10.0.0.99:443

The following error was encountered:

  • Connection to 10.0.0.99 Failed

The system returned:

+(111) Connection refused+

The remote host or network may be down. Please try the request again.

i think it's way too big.. a single purpose appliance shouldn't be bigger than 100mb, perhaps 200 if built on a general purpose os.

But does it work for you?

I am not concerned of the appliance size.

yeah it works. i had it running in my virtual DMZ but I'm missing an interface to add custom filters. but since it's too big for me i built one myself and mine is some 350mb. built in on ubuntu 6 lts. i think i'll strip it down some more to get it under 200mb. also looking for a nice webinterface for guardian.
