This appliance didn't work running inside the free VMplayer. It couldn't find my knoppix.iso and the free player doesn't allow hardware configuration to list the path. Am I doing it wrong?

Just edit the vmx file with any text editor, and change the line for the cd-rom image location to update where you have your ISO file.
