I wasn't able to install Vista 5472.5 in VMWare 5.0 so I was glad to see the 5.5 update. Unfortunately, it didn't help.

I see that VMWare Server build 27828 users are able to load this build of Vista. When can those of us with Workstation expect a fix?

Are you running Workstation 5.5.2? What sort of issues are you having? Vista Beta is listed as an experimental O/S for Workstation 5.5.2 and Server 1.0.1. Perhaps you could describe what problem you're experiencing so that others can possibly help you out.

Nick, it's listed as a known issue - cannot install build 5472 on the newest Workstation. My answer is (I just have the Public Beta 2 version installed) don't try to upgrade Vista yet!

Use VMware Server to install July CTP build 5472 and install the VMware Tools. You may be able to copy this VM over to workstation and run it there if needed.

Work is in progress on this issue, as noted in the release notes for WS

LOL! Well, you still *can*. Just not the latest version of Vista beta.

Actually July Vista runs even under WS5.5. You just cannot see its display without Tools installed...

I really think VMWare should have some sort of FAQ
for customers who are facing this. I have used
VMWare Workstation since version 2 for development
and testing and I really think I'm owed a product
that can run the current tbetaware.
So complain to Microsoft for continually changing the guts of their new OS while it's in beta testing! Sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this one. I don't understand how you can expect a software company (like VMware) to stay on top of another software company's (MS in this case) beta cycle on something as deeply involved as an OS and device drivers, kernel modules, etc. I believe that VMware's doing the best job they can here. If they release a product which they are Supporting, then they need to run their product through a QA cycle. This takes time! And if MS is constantly changing the underlying code in their beta software (which they have absolutely every right to do, BTW), VMware can't possibly keep up its QA cycle fast enough to release updates to their customers.

You are right, we disagree.

I understand that VMWare cannot foresee changes that
Microsoft makes and I don't expect things to work
perfectly during a beta cycle.

But I'm talking about documentation for a known
problem -- known for over a month. There is no
reason there could not be some discoverable
documentation to tell VMWare customers how to work
around it.

known for over a month by who? Not VMware
It was recently discovered and documented in the WS 5.5.2 release notes.

Actually July Vista runs even under WS5.5.
Since I cannot even install Vista 5472.5 in WS5.5 -- it hangs at the first step of setup -- I
have no idea whether or not it might run.

This is simple not true. It does not hang. You just do not see what is shown on screen, but if you'll run Vista install on real hardware side by side and everything you do on real hardware (or VMware Server) where you can see display you'll do on WS5.5 as well (where no display is shown), at the end you'll have Vista installed in both WS5.5 and on real hardware/VMware Server.
