hidden network adapters when importing from MS Virtual Machine to VMWare posted: Aug 14, 2006 9:04 AM

When I converted my MS virtual machines to VMWare, ended up with hidden network adapters that are assigned the IP address it had when it was a MS virtual machine. When I try to set the IP address of the VMWare created network adapter, I get an error telling me that the IP address is being used by hidden network adapters. The Virtual Server doesn't respond to that IP address though.

Does anyone know how do deal with this problem?

First open up a command prompt, then type in:

SET DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES=1
START DEVMGMT.MSC

This should start up the device manager. Go into View->Show hidden devices. That should show the shadowed out nic card that needs to be removed in the Network Adapters area.

Hi, Thanks for your reply. I also found this
article, and it didn't work. The command line
arguments run fine, and without error, but when I
open up the MMC,

Did you open MMC using supplied line from the same CMD shell window?
START DEVMGMT.MSC

the hidden devices still don't show
up, but when I try to assign the appropriate IP
address to the network adaptor the VMWare installed,
I get the error telling me that there are hidden
devices.

Another peculiar thing. The network device that VM
ware installed is not the same hardware that I have
in the server at all, but the hidden one, based on
the above error message, is the correct network
device.

I had to recreate my VMs becuase of a configuration file stuff-up (mine) and when powered on, all of them had the hidden adapter issue. I had to repair the vmtools install to get a new virtual nic, then use the devmgr (show hidden) to show and uninstall the old card. Some of the VMs picked up the old settings after the delete, others I had to put in the IP into the new card, reboot all and everything is ok.
I am only posting this as I had to combine two different forum solutions to get where I needed to be. Thanks guys!
