It is noteworthy that one can set up VNC for the clients via:
http://kb.vmware.com/vmtnkb/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1246&sliceId=SAL_Public
the above article. Only GSX is mentioned, but it works on ESX as well.
This at least gives you a console for the clients.

Still, this is no replacement for a fully fledged, native Centre Server and Client.

I know vmware's target market for ESX is large corporations deploying dozens/hundreds of boxes so that all the expensive virtualcenter functionality can be licensed/etc and to be fair linux vs windows doesn't matter much in that environment.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if there were also *lots* of small businesses with server infrastructure that is near 100% linux and limited to a single cab or half cab in data/colocation centers. I have several clients in this situation, and it simply makes little sense to require me or my clients to install a small farm of windows boxes just to manage 1-4 ESX systems (dell 2900 or 2950's) per client.

So, yes, please make the linux client or a fully functional web interface available.

I'll add my two cents to this as well that cross-platform VI clients would be great.

The situation is perhaps worse for me than others. I use a mac on my desktop. With ESX 2 I ran virtual PC on my mac and the remote console application and it was slow but good enough.

With VI 3 written in .NET the performance is completely horrible in Virtual PC.

I've tried to work around by running VI 3 on our citrix server. This works, but I can't get out of a virtual console on a linux virtual machine, because citrix does not pass control-alt through to the application. Anyone know of a workaround?

VMware support's first answer told me to modify /etc/inittab to change my system's control-alt-delete behavior. Nice.

Classic EMC. When I heard they bought WMWare you just knew something like this was going to happen.

Can anyone recommend other virtualization products?

Is cool to see a lot of support for a Linux Client, posted above my support but will do so again, would be a good thing for a lot of shops including mine.

I wonder if the yet-to-be-released (vaporware, announced in aug) Macintosh OS X VMWare product will include VI3 client ...

Since it will be a Workstation-type product, I seriously doubt it...

Hardly vaporware since (a)They've had one running in their labs for quite some time now; (b)There's at least one VMworld session about the Mac product. :-)

In reading this thread, that was my first thought. Guess it's time to experiment and see what does / doesn't work if I try installing the VC client in Wine. Fun, fun, fun! :-)

Maybe that's the only solution as VMware seems not to start any positive action.
We are actually testing XEN, something we had not even thought a year ago.

Most battles are lost due to our errors.

Yes, absolutely... the lack of a Linux client is a huge step back compared to v2, and may be the biggest reason for a switch to another virtualization solution.
What was VMware thinking killing off a Linux client?

Plus this new client, may have a couple of small improvements, but overall it is bloated, clunky, and dependant on .Net... why? why??
