Windows 2003 VM's Virtual Centre listed IP Address posted: Jul 20, 2006 2:02 AM

Hi,

We've created both Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 Standard Edition Templates both with two virtual nics connected to PRoduction and Backup Virtual switches.

Virtual Nic 1 connects to the Production Switch and virtual Nic 2 to the Backup switch on both templates. Bindings have also been set so that the Production nic is the first in the list on both templates.

However Windows 200 VM's deployed from templates show the main production IP Address as the IP for the VM in Virtual Centre yet Windows 2003 VM's from Template show the the Backup interface?

Does anyone know where Virtual Centre pulls the VM IP address? We would like all the VM's to show their main Production IP Address in Virtual Centre to help support and how can we change this on the existing 2003 VM's?

Many thanks

Matt

As far as I know, the IP address shown in VirtualCenter for multihomed VMs is a crap shoot. You never know which one will be displayed. It seems to be random at best. I have several multihomed VMs and in VC, sometimes the "first" NIC IP is displayed; sometimes the "second" NIC IP is displayed. I stopped worrying about it a long time ago because I didn't think there was anything I could do about it.

Hello All,

I just discovered this "feature" in VirtualCenter as well. Currently running version 1.3. Anyone running 2.0 that can confirm that VC is still reporting only the 2nd assigned NIC?

Thanks,

Jason

Maybe I could test this sometime today or tonight.

I have the same problem with VC 1.3.

All of my VM's have two nics. One is the production NIC, the other is for backups to our Tivoli server. Sometimes the IP address for the backup NIC is displayed in VC, other times it is the production NIC. It doesn't seem to follow a pattern either.

It would be great if you could get both NIC IP addresses to show, but at the very least let us choose which one needs to be displayed.
