Nice.

Very simple interface.

NO LOGIN REQUIRED, GOOD JOB! I don't think your appliance should have a login. Could you imagin having to login everytime you wanted to use your mircowave?

Not a huge image, but not very small either.

I've already used this at work to find out who was sucking up all the bandwidth at work.

Good job!

I gave you a three star vote.

A very good software, although I am a newbie to Linux and am learning very slowly. But I appreiate the work that has gone into making Hownetworks, its beautiful to say the least.

I need some help though, I am not able to find the IP address of the virtual machine, how can I find and change it so it talks to my host?

Help is much appreciated, I will rate this soon and give it a good 4 stars.

Is there a website for this appliance?

Thankx in advance,
Jayant

The appliance is designed to run without an IP address. This way no need
to worry about remote login and security and stuff.

However it's just a regular stripped down Ubuntu distribution. If you are comfortable with starting up a shell and using an editor, the configuration file to poke is /etc/network/interfaces. To get a root shell, use sudo -s (no password).

example:
iface eth0 inet static
<tab> address 192.168.0.111
<tab> netmask 255.255.255.0
<tab> gateway 192.168.0.1

Is this, or any appliance available for download other than bittorrent? Most corporate firewalls block BT ports..

First - great job, and congrats for the win - once I read the slashdot article, I jumped to download this, and I really like what I see.
Second - what is the keyboard layout being used? I am trying to modify a couple of things, from the shell, but my US-QWERTY does not look like having the keys in the right place?!?

Well, first, thank you.

We haven't yet released US localized version of HowNetWorks:-)

In the meanwhile, you can change your keyboard mapping with "setxkbmap us" in a terminal window. If you want to make the change permanent, you must edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and change options for the US keyboard layout.

# Option "XkbLayout" "us"
Option "XkbLayout" "fi"

to ->

Option "XkbLayout" "us"
# Option "XkbLayout" "fi"

Hi,

Nice tool.
But how can I export any text from the virtual machine to my host?
I've found a "conversation" using the "Follow TCP Stream".
Now I want to save and analyse this conversation on my host.
How can I do it?
I tried smb but smb is not provided by the vm.

Thanks for any help

I concur with your concerns about BitTorrent. Torrent is not a corporate or campus friendly technology. Using BitTorrent exclusively as a distribution mechanism is going to hamper the adoption of Virtual Appliances. An alternate distribution system would be very, very helpful.

Where are the torrents?

Sorry - I've looked all over hell's half-acre and I can't find the torrents for these appliances? Is it just because it's Friday night?

BUMP!

I can't find ANY of the torrents! A forum search for "Torrent" gave this url http://torrent.vmware.com/ but there is only 1 appliance listed.
