NeDiVA will automatically discover your Cisco network devices and gather a plethora of useful information about your network.

This was great right out of the box, but once I installed VMWare-tools, installed SSH and stopped gdm (big performance hit) it was even better. Great app at a great price (free)!

Jsa13,

Thanks for the review! I had to make some tough decisions about what to include with Nediva.

1. VMware tools - I have tested these and they are a great addition. However, I have discovered that networking would break when the Linux kernel was upgraded. Since this is a network-based application, I felt that it was more important to have stable networking. That is why I decided not to install VMware tools.

2. SSH - This is a basic administration tool, but I didn't want to open the system to exploitation, since the default username and password are public information. It was easy enough to install SSH, right? (Make sure you change the default password.)

3. GUI - Yes, gdm takes resources but I wanted to make it easy to administer the box. Most users will not know the commands to change the IP, DNS, and default gateway. Plus, I wanted to showcase the beautiful Ubuntu desktop! :)

Let me know if you run into any other issues, or if I can answer any questions.

Thanks,

Tristan Rhodes

TomVDB,

I assume you are still trying to install VMware tools. Ubuntu is setup so that actions that require root must be run by using "sudo" (super-user do). So, to install vmware-tools you just need prepend the word "sudo" in front of your command. It would look like this:

sudo <COMMAND>

Sudo will ask you for a password, and you simply need to type "nediva". This will allow you to run any command as root.

Good luck!

Tristan

Hi,
Excuse the beginner question but I am having issues getting NeDiva to pickup a 2600 and 2800 series, should it be able to pick up these and report on the interfaces etc?

Thanks
Col.

Hi,

Also, does it pickup Pix firewall interface statistics? All I see is a greyed out graphic with no information. I also wanted to say thanks for building a great application that's easy to deploy and use.

Thanks,
David

Col -

NeDi may not support every Cisco device on your network. However, support for most Cisco devices can easily be added by created new device ".def" files. You can read more about this on the NeDi forums:

David,

I am glad to hear that NeDiVA is working well for you. We have realized that it would be VERY hard to go back to managing networks without NeDi!

Unfortunately, NeDi doesn't support Pix devices because they are so different from IOS. Keep an eye of future versions, where PIX support might be added.

Can anyone provide a different torrent (As the VMWare Nediva torrent isn't working) or a direct download for this appliance please.

Thanks

D.
