Google answered my question. In case anyone else is wondering, here is the solution.
#ifconfig eth0 up
#dhcpcd eth0

Be sure to add these lines to your /etc/rc.d/rc.local file, otherwise you will have to re-enable the ethernet interface each time you power on the VM.

Is the BackTrack appliance still available. Everytime I try to access the download it gives me a page cannot be displayed error.
