install raid controller during ESXi5 installation

Hi

Today we plan to install ESXi5 on our server.

We didn't have any problem during installation of ESX4.1 as it ask for custom drivers when it starts.

But ESXi5.0.0 does not ask for custom driver installation and we can not install raid controller driver!

I don't know how to solve it so I wanted to know is there any way to install the raid controller?

Thanks in advance.

I know I am asking too many questions but I know a little about this.

No problem, that's what the forum is made for Smiley Wink

Now After downloading the Image how should I use it?

Burn the image to a CD-ROM and run the installation from this bootable CD. Keep in mind though that the image may only be used for new installations, not for upgrades (see release notes).

Hi,

The general answer is that if your server is on the HCL then your driver will already be there.

If it's not, then there is probably no driver that will ever work under ESXi. So first question is, is the server on the HCL?

Assuming there actually is a driver that works in ESXi and isn't there by default (unlikely), you should be able to:

Install ESXi to flash

Apply the driver as a patch. Please google the various "patching ESXi 5.0" guides.

Reboot and see your RAID card

I saw this:

http://downloads.vmware.com/d/details/dt_esxi50_areca_arcmsr_1200015110622/dCV0YnRwdEBidGVkZA==

The driver is there but I don't know how to use it.

Should I do the same as you said above? Or I can do something else because the driver is on the site?

Thanks

You basically have two options. Either check whether vSphere Hypervisor ESXi 5.0 Driver Rollup 2 image contains the driver and use this image for installation or create your own customized image using VMware's Image Builder.

On the right side of the download page you can find a link to the "Release Notes" which list all the additional drivers.
