Quite a simple on really, Emulex or Qlogic for fibre connectivity?

Thoughts and experiences of those using either or both of these products welcome.

Chances are host server with be HP BL25p. SAN that will be conencted to is not yet decided.

Thanks

I also vote for Qlogic, but I can't offer any hard reasons why.

I'm sure there have been discussions before regarding Emulex and boot from san issues.

I also have had the best luck with QLogic.

However, a deciding factor will be your SAN vendor. We made a decision to use QLogic based upon a recommendation from EMC and HP (Our SAN vendors).

As far as I can tell, with HP storage arrays (I have just checked the EVA4/6/8000 and MSA1500 support tables), only the Qlogic boards for the blades are supported.

Qlogic. The Qlogic HBA's take up less heap space. Also - only HBA supported so far for BFS with ESX.

QLogic is by far better choice. Memory requirements on the console are less for QLogic vs. Emulex. Also I have seen issues with Emulex cards during failovers, QLogic doesn't suffer from the same issue.

Miller or Budwieser......

matter of taste, seen both, less issues with Qlogic.

Qlogic would be my choice

We started with Emulex, but our storage guys recommended QLogic. They said the QLogic cards have a few, more granular configuration options. The Qlogic cards have been flawless, so far.

We also use Qlogic as recommended by IBM when we built our ESX Servers.

I seem to remember in my course that Qlogic worked very closely with vmware whereas Emulex were not as cooperative...but it might have been the other way around too...

Well - I was a fan of Emulex after my experiences with the first generations of Qlogic cards "loosing thier brains". Older Qlogic cards would fry up but still inform the hardware that the SAN was alive. Therefore, never failover to the other path.

Currently, I find Qlogic to be better suited to Linux and ESX environments. Emulex for Windows boxes .... etc.

Yup ,as above ,horse for courses. We are an Emulex house.
We have LP1050 Emulex card throughout our entire organisation.

Just to put in to scale we have a dozen or so ESX farms with around 6-8 hosts in each.
We also use the LP1000/1050/8000 in our Wintel boxes (~1100).

So far no issues above and beyond wear'n'tear.
But again, as previously stated in other threads, there is no particular differences, people have had good/ bad experiences of both.
There is certainly no performance difference, no MTBF difference, beyond those marketing figures we all get pitched ;-)
