Trying to update of VMWare Tools

error message:

update of VMWare Tools for Windows 2000 or later pending...

CDS internal client error(3001) Contact VMWare Support or your system administrator

Is Ubuntu your host or guest?

If host, what is the guest OS and version?

Player version?

Have you tried downloading the Tools installers separately?  Player Menu-->File-->Player Preferences-->Download All Components Now.

Ubuntu is a host.

Guest is Windows XP Professional.

Player 4.0

downloading the Tools installers separately solve the problem.
