Hi I installed an ubuntu dapper guest
vmware tools compile fine (hgfs and vmnet) but the script does not sort X out
saying no X install found.
A guest wihout vmware tools X support is unusable.

any hints?

BTW - also the network stopped working with the vmware tools installed.

Not sure what you mean by "not sort X out"? Is X installed? Have you looked at the X config from a terminal?

Do you have any error messages?

I suggest trying to edit vmware-config-tools.pl. It looks like it should be fairly easy to point it at the correct X stuff.

Look at about the middle of the file, your error seems to be coming from line 4965. Given that you know where they live, you can "update" vmware to point at them.

Hope that helps.

"yes X is installed, but the vmware tools installer cannot detect it,
so you're left with the mouse pointer "prisoner" in the vm window. which is the most unusable thing for a guest. "

FYI, the keyboard combo of alt+ctl releases the mouse so you can move to another window or monitor. This is still a pain, just a temporary workaround.

I have modified the vmware-config-tools.pl file to support X.org 7. I haven't tested it throughfully, but appears to work as expected.

I have added the required functions for X11-7 support, meaning that the file will still work for any previous X11 versions.

As I can't attach the file, I uploaded it using www.spead-it.com . Here's the link:

http://www.spread-it.com/dl.php?id=7704121c7587ed1e3e932930b3d519e2204e2e6c

Just replace the file in /usr/bin with this one if you have the tools already installed. Then run vmware-config-tools.pl to setup the tools with the new file.

If you haven't installed VMware Tools yet, replace the file in ./vmware-tools-distrib/bin . Then, when you install VMware Tools, the modified file will be used.

I hope it works. I have tested in an Ubuntu Dapper Flight 4 installation only.

Thanks for that, but could you please post the changes instead.
I have already done som changes to vmware-config-tools.pl to make it run on fedora core 5.

I will post the changes shortly. I'll probly upload a diff file using www.spread-it.com, to avoid clutter here. Is that ok with you?

Can someone post this again or another hacked version of vmware-config-tools.pl that works with dapper drake? (xorg 7) Both the diff and the hack above have expired and are no longer accessible.
