You might ask if VS is really so good, why are they
completely replacing it with another product in a
couple of years? Lame duck product now that actually
competes with a free product from VMware.

there is a huge difference between an application and a platform.
Windows Hypervisor will provide the base for the whole Windows infrastucture now lying directly on hardware for the time to come, offering a large set of API for several third party applications.
Microsoft is trying to build a new I/O model preserving compatibility with existing Virtual Server virtual machines.
They are not completely replacing existing technology. They are reengineering something born to be an application to become an extensible, foundation plaftorm.
