My manager just sent me an email on his was back from the local Windows 2003 R2 launch event. Our local MS tech specialist says "Virtual Server is now on par with ESX performance and has a lower TCO".

Seems a little optimistic to me. He has offered to come down to provide more details and lab it out.

Could get interesting since we are a user of both MS and EMC/VMware products. Took me a couple of years to sell VMware and now MS is going to try and convince Mgmt that VS is better.

I'd like to see your results, but I can't imagine this to be true.

Even if "Virtual Server is now on par with ESX performance," (which I do not believe for a second) there is still no VMotion type ability for Virtual Server. We would never have even considered virtualizing in production at my company without VMotion.

I attended a similar event where the MS guy told us that "in order to get vmotion to work you need a SAN from EMC", now there's a guy I really need to listen to..... ;-)

VMotion functionality will arrive Soon(tm) on VS as well. MS even told us at VMworld that such functionality was among the top priority things that would be included in VS.

The thing is. MS has just started it's marketing hype on VS and we all know how good they are at hyping their products and getting them out to the masses. They also have been giving away licenses for VS for free at several events that I've been to lately (and it's almost free if you want to buy it too). I guess we know our history in what has happened before when MS has given away their (not superiour at first) products.

That people even compare VS to ESX today is like comparing an Orange to a Lemon. GSX/VMware Server is more of a comparison even if it's a Mandarin Orange to a Orange Clementine.

I also remember an old issue between MS and Novell where MS defended their "NT directory services" against NDS. It took some more years until they introduced AD, but by then many had already gone down the MS route from Novell to NT DS.

I'm pretty sure MS might use their marketing department for what it's worth in this battle of virtualization as well.

Show your management the list of critical Microsoft patches that would have had to been applied over the last year on your MS VirtualCenter servers. Unless you actually cluster MSVS servers (how can that be cheaper?) that means downtime to all your VMs running (best case) or potential for problems every time you apply a MS patch. If you have worked in IT a few years you have probably seen at least one MS patch that caused as much problems as it fixed.

Even if it was true to be on par with ESX 2.x, its not even close to ESX3 and VC2.

MS sales from the begging of VirtualServer has been telling its customers that its just as good or better than ESX from day 1, they tried that at our company about a year and a half ago, or whenever VirtualServer was first introduced.

MS isn't going to have a vMotion feature, from what I recall. Their answer to vMotion is to cluster the physical VirtualServer servers using MSCS. You would have near zero downtime in event of one physical server failure, and you could manually failover to the other server for maintenance, but that isn't exactly vMotion, especially when you consider DAS/DRS in VC2.

Hi,

Today, as I see it ESX has the edge over MS VirtualServer on a number of fronts.

1) Maturity & Pedigree
2) Performance
3) Managability
4) Capability and Feature set.

As other posters have said ESX 3 and VC will raise the bar yet again.

Competition is good for us all ,as it will provoke further innovation.

Was he green all over and hops around and is in love with a pig becuase he sounds like a right muppet to me? VS is a long way from ESX and only fairly close to GSX. It might be ok for small sites, departmental apps but as a datacenter product, no.

Sounds like Kermit has joined M$.

Lets be fair give them a enough time to sort it out, say 2009, fourth quarter for a good beta?
