Getting VMWare Player 4 working

Hello Everyone,

it took me really quite a time to get the VMWare player 4 working. So I'd like to share my experience here - hope it helps others ...

1) I got an automatic update message in VMWare Player 3, clicked ok, restarted my computer after the recommended uninstallation of version 3. Then after restart a message box gave me some timeout message - and i did not find the installer anymore. So I reinstalled VMWare player 3, chose to upgrade it again - then it worked. Several restarts worth nothing ...

Easier way: Download the installer from following link. I found this link later ...

http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/4.0.0/471780/windows/core/

2) Then I tried to update my vmware tools. The automatic update constantly failed with an error message - so the question was: Where to find the updated tools? After an hour of searching i found them here:

http://softwareupdate.vmware.com/cds/vmw-desktop/player/4.0.0/471780/windows/packages/

3) Then i tried to install the tools. This was not possible on my Windows 7 x64 machine, i constantly got an error message called "...error 1625..." - possibly it has to do something with group privileges, possibly with signing installers, possibly with some weird windows updates - didn't find the right solution for it. I then went into one of my windows xp vm's, there i noticed that shared folders will only work with updated vmware tools. So: Download the file again, execute it on windows xp - and it works, the windows.iso is now unpacked into the vmware directory inside the VM. Then I got some mounting tool, mounted the .iso like a physical drive, installed the tools - and the work was done 🙂

I found the links for the software in another thread here (with older version) - so i hope the VMware guys don't have a problem when i post them here. If i had them before installing, it would have saved me some time and it would have saved the vmware servers much of useless download traffic - i downloaded many files before i found the right ones 🙂

The folders can be browsed through, so one can easily find the tools for other than the windows versions. Have fun with it 🙂
