p2pi2v.org.uk copies ntfs & ext3 'data' fine it even 'converts' IDE 2 SCSI data but I keep getting os missing (nt) or kernel panics (gnu/linux)

we're going to have to buy VMware P2V for WINDxx IDE2SCSI but I'd like to make gnu/linux work

so far i've tried reinstalling grub and/or mkinitrd and/or editing /etc/fstab but without success

That would be brill - a single "universal-ultimate-p2pi2v" tool for WindXX and GNU/Linux !

I'm pretty sure that GNU/Linux P2V can be done since everyone just keeps saying "it's easy", "it works" or they tweak it "manually" without saying exactly what it is you have to do !

Great work on the doc for a great tool!

May I make a couple of suggestions that might be included for the next iteration of the doc?

1) Merge the long and short guide.
In my opinion, the 2 docs are sufficiently similar and yet different enough to encourage people to download both and then compare them to see the differences. I think it would be better to have one doc with say steps 1-10, stating that (say) steps 3, 7 and 8 can be skipped for a quicker install.

2) Add a header/footer which includes the doc's filename and also 'page x of y'.

I hope these don't come across as too pedantic.
Hal

I've tried to build the Ultimate-P2V on 3 different systems using 4 XP CDs and they all produced the following errors. I followed the directions to a 't' and it doesn't build. I've made sure there are no spaces in the filepath.

Below are the errors from the log. I can include the entire log if I need to.

I made blank files of the names listed below but the disk wouldn't boot so I guess they're important. What should I do?

*NOTE* - I used the local install of Windows for this example because I don't have an XP CD at work. But the errors were the same, I am sure of it.

Which is it? Did you use XP CDs, or did you point to the installed OS folder? You MUST point the PEBuilder to the XP (or 2003) setup CD.

Sorry.... I did both actually. Over the weekend, on each of the three systems, I used my 4 XP CDs and the computer's installed OS folder. They all produced the same result (15 times).

I didn't save any of the logs from my weekend experiences. So for this post, I just used the installed OS folder to generate the names of the files that were listed in the error logs.

Thanks!

Is there not anyone out there with this thing already completed and available as a .iso download? Not that I'm lazy, but more along the lines of having more work than hours in the day, and if there was a successful image it would certainly make things easier.

I was able to snag a copy of Windows Server 2003 from work and I'm still getting the errors! I followed the Short Instructions on the rtfm-ed.co.uk website exactly but I get these file errors. I'm removing components (vmxnet-w2k, my e100 drivers, etc) one by one and trying to build again and I'll report back if I can get it to work.

I would love an .iso with the VMware drivers and Intel e100 drivers. Anyone feel generous?

Edit: The removing of components didn't work. I'm trying this method on a vanilla Windows 2003 install in a virtual machine... sigh... will update later...

Edit 2: *The problem is the custom pebuilder.inf referenced in the Short P2V guide.* I followed the guide and inserted the drivers and plugins one step at a time. My final step was adding http://www.rtfm-ed.co.uk/downloads/pebuilder.inf and that's when it failed on the 10 files. I don't know how to fix it but I've isolated the step that caused the problem at least.

Given the files I listed above, can anyone help? Can I use the iso generated with the default pebuilder.inf?

If you are using a newer version of PEBuilder than the one referenced in the guide, then do NOT replace the pebuilder.inf with the one from the web page! There is only one line in the inf file you need to change - the one to remove the wallpaper.

William - making the iso available would violate Microsoft's licensing, as it is built with either a WinXP or a Win2003 install disc, and includes MS files. You must provide your own, and build it yourself. This has been discussed before.

I know about the licensing thing... I was getting pretty frustrated though so I didn't care, lol.

I'm sorry for not reading so closely about the inf file. I was working on completing the steps but didn't catch that part.

I got an ISO generated using Win2003 following all the steps except the inf. Works great! My goal is to move my Windows installation off my laptop and onto my work desktop so I can put Linux on my laptop. I'll also make a ghost image in case I want/need to revert back to XP.

Thanks for all of the support, I appreciate it!

I think this came up before....

Newer versions of BartPE have updates made in the inf file so if you download a recent version of BartPE you need to read the inf file that comes with it and copy the recent changes (which have dates in the comments) back into the inf supplied by the Ultimate-P2V download.

See my post in here: Errors building Ultimate P2V CD - Anyone seen this? - as you can tell, I copied across the appropriate updates and it works fine.

....or you can use the version of BartPE recommended in the UltimateP2V doc.
