Thick to Thin disk convert

I have a VM-ware ESX Host 4.0 server. in that i have a 3 Guest operating system all are windows 2008 server 64-bit standard edition's .

I want to update the Patch on this server. So, I tried to Backup the Guest Virtual machines . first step i did the provisioned disk conversion.

I have converted the THICK disk into THIN disk and i add this thin disk into the VM. After the VM has rebooted continuously its shows an blue screen error

How you have convert the disk?

A simple way (if you have vCenter) is migrate the VM between two datastore.

I converting disk by using command in the service console

VMFStool.

With vmkfstools you must also be sure to do not change the adapter type.

If you have vCenter and at least two datastores (also not shared) you can use migrade / change datastore, then choose to change the format.

If you have the Storage vMotion license you can do this operation with the VMs powered on.

Check the orignal adapter type from VM properties.

Then make the conversion with:

vmkfstools -i original.vmdk -d thin -a adapter_type newthindiskname.vmdk

PS: note that you can also use VMware Standalone Converter 4.1 to make this job.
