Workstation 7.1 caches directory?

What is this new Workstation 7,1 caches directory in the VM's working directory?

What are all those files for?

When the VM is shut down and closed, can it be safely deletedfefore I zip down the directory for archiving and moving to another amchine?

If not needed, is there any way to shut off the creation of the files?

Any privacy info in those files?

Thanks in advance!

Joe

I think this caches are used for this unity-eye-candy

If I have unity enabled the first drag\n\drop action creates those directories.

AFAIK there is no global-off for Unity in the GUI so we can use

isolation.tools.unity.disable = "true"

as a workaround for now.

Hope this can be used in config.ini ... need to try this

Yeah, I'm poking around trying to see some info on the same thing too.

I'll post here if I do find any info.

Regards Peter.

Update:

good - the mentioned entry can also be used in config.ini so that we do not have to set this for every VM manually.

To reduce the amount of directories and files in the cache directory we can also use this entries

unity.enableLaunchMenu = "FALSE"

unity.showBadges = "FALSE"

unity.showBorders = "FALSE"

unity.wasCapable = "FALSE"

You can safely delete the caches directory if the VM is powered off.

The showBadges and showBorders options control visual aspects of unity windows. They have no effect on the cache directory.

Where is the file CONFIG.INI?

I searched the whole Disk C: but not albe to find it.

We used over hundreds of VPC for software tests and that leave many files

It is helpful for us not to create or auto-delete those caches files.

Thanks in advance.

You would have to create the config.ini file, and it would go in your %APPDATA%\VMware directory (alongside the preferences.ini file).

I tried this, both in the preferences and vmx and it's not working. Using Workstation v7.1.3 build-324285 on a Ubuntu 10.10 64bit Host.

Any advice?

Thanks

Bent

Hi there,

    I'm coming in on this a little late but I want to add my two cents.  I was looking for a way to dump all those caches, cause like a previous viewer, I tar up machines so that I have them all ready for the next openSuSE update..:smileysilly: I noticed that there were a lot more files being stored and looked for an answer. Thanks to continuum for the solution ... however, I need to add that IF you are using Linux as the HOST the name of the file needs to be config NOT config.ini.  After the name change it worked.  This config file gets placed in the .vmware hidden dir along with the preferences file.

Once again, Thanks,

Chuck
