New to VMWARE: Installed Ubuntu 10.4 Can't log in with correct password

Hello Community,

I know this should be taken to the Ubuntu forums, but Ubuntu 10.4 just came out and I am eager to test drive it. I downloaded VMWare and installed away.

After creating a account, I selected the account, and typing in my password. As I type the password nothing would show up. I assume that when you type in you password nothing is displayed, not even ***** Then I think to myself maybe VMWare is not getting the input from the keyboard. Has anyone ran into this sort of problem?

The password is correct I am sure of that

Thank You

In the new VM wizard, there's a page where you pick a CD drive or ISO file to use with Easy Install. The last choice is "I will install the operating system later." Choose that one, and no guest will be installed until you do so yourself.

I just made an account to post on this..

I've had Vmware Player for a while, but only had a few Operating Systems, and I really wanted Ubuntu 10.4 too..

but whenever I try and enter my password, I cant type it, exactly what your having problems with..

Anyone know how to fix this? im gonna try reinstalling and making an account without a password..

The problem would seem to be with the easy install option. If you select the customised setup the problems don't appear.

I can confirm that your problem occurs on my setup with the easy install.

I confirm the problem being in the Easy Install option: I switched to manual install and it worked properly.

The problem seems related to the keyboard: the physical one is unrecognized and the "accessibility->On Screen Keybord" doesn't work either...

Thanks for that. It worked. Ubuntu now recognizes key press.

Another problem is that the screen for 10.4 won't become full screen. Is there a trick for this one too?

Thank you everyone.

Those methods worked out and I can now log in correctly.

 Now to test drive the new Operating System

Yeah, there is a bug in using 10.04 as a virtual computer - I think it came with the Beta version (Alfa was working fine). I get this same thing on Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit working as a host as well.

I am not sure who's bug this is, but this can be solved without a re-install and this does not happen with earlier Ubuntu versions (not with other OS's (that I have used) either).

However, that is easy to solve - the trick is:

1. You need to enable the on-screen keyboard in the login display (just look around, you will see it)

2. Then you need to reboot. It does not work immediately, but after a reboot it does. From then on you can use the on-screen keyboard for

logging in.

3. In the virtual computer itself, the regular keyboard works fine.

4. Also the next time, your on-screen keyboard is automatically activated and you can use that for login.

Just a small trick to get it running ... trying to get carriage returns working correctly on this forum is much more difficult Smiley Wink
