Hi,
I need to run Windows Server 2008 R2 64-Bit on a Windows Server 2003 32-Bit host with VMware Server 2.0.1 (Build 156745). The VM is up-to-date (i.e. Windows Updates) and VMware Tools are installed. Every once in a while the VM freezes and I can't reset or power down it. I need to kill the Windows process of that machine to stop it. A Windows Server 2008 32-Bit "R1" (the version before R2) runs fine on that host.
What can I do? Thanks.
Welcome to the forums!
How much cores do the host have and how much vCPU's are assigned to the guest?
Was the guest created from scratch or was it migrated?

The host has two cores (CPU is an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750), one vCPU is assigned to the guest.
The VM was created from scratch on that host.
I am experiencing the same problem with a host with one double-core CPU and one vCPU assigned to the guest. The guest 2008 Server R2 x64 was installed from scratch.
Are the VMware Tools installed in the guest?

This happened with my guest with and without vmware tools installed. I talked to one person that said he encountered a similar problem with 2008 x64 R2 and real metal it was supposed to be compatible with. He blamed incompatibilities with I/O (disk) drivers.
I am having the same problem. Win2008R2 x64 guest with tools installed on Win7 x64 host running VMWare Server 2.0.2. The hardware for the guest is configured as Win7 (same Windows Version - 6.1). Happy to know I'm not the only one ![]()
Hi,
found the same Problem here. Here It is easy to reproduce!
I use VMware Server 2.0.2 running on a Quad Core Windows 2003 Server x86 with PAE 16GB Main Mem.
Guest is a Windows 2008 R2x64 Server with VMware Tools installed. # of vCPUs doesn't matter ...
Just start the Guest System, log in , start Taskmanager , go to Performamce Tab and resize the TM Window to the bottom of the screen - voila - it freezes!
hope someone find a solution to this problem ....
regards
Chris
I've installed exchange 2010 server on windows 2008 R2 with vm tools. and now vm freezes with no reasons during i tuning exchange console untill i reset it. i'm tried to resize "performance tab" and.... it's freezed too!
I am having the same problem, host machine is 2008 x64 R2 with VM Server 2.0.2. I think this is a bigger issue? I will try in install ESXi 4 on my server and see if that helps. Has anyone contacted VMware support about this issue?
I found that if on the VM 2008 R2 64bit server you turn off all power saving features, might what to do this on the host server as well, that it does not freeze as often. The R2 VM still freezes after awhile, maybe a day or two.
Hope this helps?
Yeah, me too! Glad I'm not organically clueless.
I'm running Windows 7 x64 on AMD Athlon QuadCore 9850 with 12 GB RAM (on Host) and multiple hard drives (to distribute system i/o) and my Guest OS is Windows Server 2008 R2 (which is x64 only) and I routinely have Guest lockups. The VMWare menu bar at the top of each Guest/VM allows me to select Power off and Exit and that's how I am able to reboot the Guests. All Guest VMs were created from scratch using the 'free' .iso download from Microsoft's web site.
And when things do work they are pretty sluggish. I have VMWareTools installed on every VM.
I guess I should add this:
I have 4 VMs, all 4 have a single vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB of disk space, a bridged network adapter and other setup defaults. All 4 can be loaded simultaneously, but clicking in menus or installing roles or features or adjusting window divisions randomly cause lockups. Some activities very reliably cause lockups.
I'm not doing any "real" work -- I'm just preparing for a M$ cert exam in Svr 2008. Things are going slowly.....

I found that if I RDP into the VM instead of using VMWare to operate the console, it never freezes on me. I hope VMWare is monitoring these.
Hi folks!
As mentioned here http://www.marktastic.com/2010/01/windows-server-2008-r2-random-lockups-on-vmware-esx/comment-page-1/#comment-7889
this is well known bug. After I’ve disabled SVGA driver on my VMs everything goes well now.
VMware fixed this begavior in vSphere Update 1 http://www.vmware.:com/support/vsphere4/doc/vsp_esx40_u1_rel_notes.html
Virtual machines sometimes fail with a blue screen when hardware acceleration is enabled fully
Virtual machine fails displaying a blue screen when you run certain applications with the hardware acceleration enabled fully in Windows guest operating system.
This is an issue with the SVGA driver, which is resolved in this release.
Probably a 'dumb' question, kinda new here, but does the vSphere update help with VMWare Server 2.0.2?
