You are right. The vmnetcfg.exe functionality must be a menu entry on vmplayer.exe but, instead of integrating it on the menu system, someone has decided to delete it. Not a very clever move from VMware, Inc...

not clever ? - this is nuts ...

why add the new feature of creating VMs and then on the other hand remove basic usabilty features.

On Windows you can still work around the missing vmnetcfg.exe but this workarounds are not documented by VMware and they even say that they do not want to document it.

For now you best install Workstation and run it without license - this will give you a VMplayer that is usable as the missing tools will be present then.

Weird ... really weird

Actually, as it turns out, the vmnetcfg.exe is included in the installer, but won't be installed. Here's a description as how to "pull" the exe out of the archive manually.

1. Run the installer with /e option. For example:

VMware-player-3.0.0-197124.exe /e .\extract

All contents will be extracted to "extract" folder.

2. Open "network.cab" and copy vmnetcfg.exe to your installation folder,

typically "C:\Program Files\VMware\VMware Player\".

PS: Don't bother copying an older version of vmnetcfg.exe from some older version of the player / workstation if you're running Windows 7 - it'll crash. (This one runs fine).

Enjoy,

Mr. Anderson

Thanks for the useful hint.

I hope that VMware folks will add the 2 main missing items from VMware Player:

- vmnetcfg.exe

- the option to connect network interfaces to vmnet(x) without manually editing the .vmx file

Regards

Marius
