ESXi 4.0.0, 193498 does not see all the installed memory posted: Nov 7, 2009 3:12 AM

Recently we purchased the new Dell R210 (http://www.dell.com/us/en/enterprise/servers/poweredge-r210/pd.aspx?refid=poweredge-r210&cs=555&s=biz) with 4 GB of memory. On this box ESXi 4.0 was installed succesfully. Now from the vSphere client only approx 2300 MB is available for virtual machines (also visible in attachment). Does anyone have a clue what could be the issue here?

Your first picture shows the full 4GB with your VM's only using 2.3gb of that 4GB according to your first screen shot...

Hi,

I have found a reasonable answer in the following URL:

As i understand it now, the ESXi hypervisor by itself utilises 512M and after that is defining a reservation for 768M extra for the vmvisor component. It still sounds a bit strange to me that this virtualisation piece takes up to 1,2 GB of memory.

Hi,

what storage controller did you have ? I plan to get R210 with SAS 6/iR controller, but I am not sure if it will work, while I want to have RAID 1 enabled.

Hi,

My current configuration is based on the SAS 6/iR card in RAID1 configuration. This works fine. A quick advice: get yourself a lot of memory (minimal 8 GB) in the box.
