Under ESX4 for a properly/fast working Linux guest(s) do I VMware Tools installed? I'm not running X windows or doing any video at all. Its purely text based servers like web and samba. Thanks.
VMware Tools provide a lot of feature.
I suggest to install them for guest shutdown/reboot (very useful), VCB script (but for a samba server are not necessary), memory ballon driver (very important), network/disk drivers (I do not notice a big difference with Linux drivers).
My kernels are version 2.4 (Slackware 10) and are custom compilied. I was curious if anyone knows a step by step on how to install in this scenario. Do I need to patch my kernel source or something? Or just enable kernel modules?
The tools come as a tar.gz of source that it will automatically compile and install as modules into your running kernel against your existing kernel version.
