What is the best way to backup the VMs to eliminate the risk of corruption?

Here is what I currently do. are there any flaws in my strategy?

1. Suspend all VMs
2. Use Acronis True Image home to backup all VM files to another Hard drive
3. Resume VMs

I noticed that while the VM is suspended, it's folder contains .lck files; Is this a cause for concern?

I power down the VM, then back it up simply with Winrar or Winzip. Then power back on the VM.

I'm not a fan of Resuming/Pausing...not sure what the risk is...might as well just power it down if you ask me.
