Hi,

I am about to attach a .vmdk file which was earlier connected to a different server. Before I attach this .vmdk file to the required server, I would like to rename the .vmdk file to reflect server name. However, when I browse the datastore and try to rename the .vmdk file, it throws an error saying 'this version of VI client do not support' . Because this .vmdk file is large in size, I do not want to download the file to my PC, rename it and then upload.

Please advise the best way to rename the .vmdk file.

I am running ESX server 3.5 and VC 2.5.

Thanks in advance.

a real easy way to do it would be to attach the HDD (.vmdk), then use sVMotion to move it to another datastore, or cold migration, that would rename it.

....or have a look at this KB article

Log on to the console and use the "mv" command. Be aware that there are more files which belong to a virtual disk. You should rename all of them and edit the .vmdk file as this contains pointers to the file holding the real data.
