Hi All,

We currently have 90% of our server infrastructure virtualized via vSphere (ESX4). Now we are looking to start virtualizing some of our desktop environments with Thin Clients. Server virtualization I understand, however Thin Client's and desktop VM's I know nothing about. Can someone point me in the right direction on where to start? I know HP & Sun both have Thin Clients for cheap, however I don't quite understand how they would interface with vSphere.

Basically I am just wanting a little guidence on where to begin. I know VMWare makes a product called View, but I don't quite understand what it does.

In the end what I am wanting is to have "dumb" terminals that will boot directly into guest OS's and have a majority of all the processing done at the server level.

Any help would be excellent.

yes, at a high level. I would suggest a low cost thin client such as a WYSE V10L

Hello,

Yes you can do this without View. View is integrated into ESX in a very useful way. It makes management a little easier but there are lots of VDI type products out there. Depending on your needs you can pick one. FOr a small number of people you may not need VIew but static VMs using RDP to access them. At the minimal that is what VDI gives you. You also may want to use something more robust that gives you pools of VMs that can be used with remote profiles to grant any user access to any VM and load up their specific profile as needed.

if all you need is a dumb terminal type device on the front end, what do you need on the back end? How many users are we talking about. How much space per user, etc. These are the tough questions to ask.

Hello,

Dump terminals would most likely not work as they often do not boot into RDP. Something like an N-Computing LS230 would work if you had their endpoint/broker as well as they use their own software to get to the 10 VMs.

if it was me, I would go that route or just cheap laptops w/no cd, etc.
