Solaris 10 10/09 running on ESX4. VMware tools are installed. ifconfig vmxnet3s0 mtu <value> only works for mtu values of 1500 or less. /kernel/drv/vmxnet3s.conf gives no hints related to jumbo frames.

I've come up empty searching the net. Ideas?

Hi,

First of all. The last time I read about supporting, JF was supported only for RH5.0, SLE 10 e W2k3 Enterprise and DC.

Anyway, lets explain what you need to have JF working.

Network must support it end-to-end. That means. The Physical switch, vSwitch and guest OS must support JF.

1) you have to configure your physical switch, it depends wich switch you use.

2) Configure your vSwitch. Setting the MTU on the dvSwitch is pretty simple using vClient.

or through SC:

esxcfg-vswitch -m <MTU> <vSwitch>

3) For the virtual network adapter use, vmxnet3, Enhaced vmxnet or e1000 virtual device

4) And configure your guest. For solaris using ifconfig

One more thing: Jumbo frames support is not included in a ESXi 4.0 free edition license. (According kb)

Any futher information, take a look at: KB Article: 1003712

Have you already enabled the JF on solaris?

ifconfig vmxnet3s0 unplumb
ndd -set /dev/vmxnet3s0 instance 0
ndd -set /dev/vmxnet3s0 accept-jumbo 1
ifconfig vmxnet3s0 plumb

or after the enable did above you can use the ifconfig

ifconfig vmxnet3s0 inet 111.222.333.444 netmask 255.255.255.0 mtu 9194
