A customer is reporting issues using the IBM Notes client with View v3.1.

The desktops are configured as non-persistent, and they are reporting problems problems loging in. When the user logs in, there is data that is copied to the VM that contains the users personal info for Notes, such as their address book, and other items. Because this data is copied at log in, there is a delay, sometimes up to ten minutes, before the user is actually logged in.

Has anyone seen this behavior with Notes or any other applicaiton that relies on user profile information and might have suggestions? Thanks, -Jeff

if the names.nsf file is being copied during the login process, that could take sometime depending on the size of the file and thus your delayed login. If you can use persistant pools, that would probably fix the issue.

I haven't used notes in quite sometime, but if the names.nsf file (client file) is being redirected, it holds a lot of information beyond contacts. It holds connection information as well.

One thought would be to use webmail which will alleviate the fat client. Also, I'm not 100% sure, but I believe you can store local contacts on the Domino server as opposed to on the client.

The only thing with Outlook is that it would be pulling down the email once you logged in. The login would likely be quick but it would take a while to pull down all the email if it's going to be stored locally.

anything that utilizes a roaming profile could affect the login times. For us, with exchange, all .pst files are stored in the my documents folder, which redirects to the users home folder on a network file server. Therefore any machine they use they always have access to their information.

Take it for what it's worth since I haven't used notes in a long time, but I believe you can also edit the connection settings of the notes client, therefore redirecting the names.nsf anywhere. This will reduce your login times because the file will not have to be copied locally every time a user logs in.

My advise would be to look at a GPO that would redirect your my documents folder and see about updating the connection settings on the notes fat client.

You could try some profile management tools like RTO Virtual Profiles or RES Softwares solution.

They do some clever stuff to speed up the logon process. RTO is very simple to try out and does not have a server side component.
