Problem w/serial port in Windows 98 posted: Nov 2, 2009 7:12 PM

So I have Windows XP installed on a Dell Latitidue D610. I have VMware Workstation 7 installed with a VM setup for Windows 98. This was done in order to run some legacy software. This software connects to devices via the serial port in order to receive data and send commands. When trying to use this software however the serial report in the VM does not respond...no errors or anything.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

who is Bueller ???

hope you have onboard serial-ports and not a PCI-addon card ?

I'll take a look at that and mess with it this evening. It looks like these are settings that I can change in a "VMX-file"?

yes - but as far as I know only onboard serial ports work - you have not answered that question

It's a laptop so I'm nearly certain it's onboard and not PCI.

I think that did it. I added the "Windows-host useing a physical device com1" configuration and it now shows a serial device and the indicator turns on and off when in use. It will be tested tomorrow but I'm fairly certain that did it.
