It might/should work, but you'll want to test to verify ... but if you're trying to backup Linked Clones in LM, you'll need to look at alternative due to the way Linked Clones are implemented in LM. For all other VM/Templates, you can probably backup through your traditional VM backup whether that is in guest or even with VCB/Veeam type of solution.
