Hi,

I am using vCenter Converter Standalone Client version 4.0.1 build-161434 to try and create a VM of my running Windows Vista SP2 64-bit system, but every time I try it fails at 95%during the reconfiguration phase. The following screenshot shows the status and log highlights:

I have tried with a target disk that is both FAT32 and NTFS and as a single VMDK or 2GB split files. I have turned off UAC and disabled Norton Anti-Virus. But none of this has made a difference and I always get exactly the same error at exactly the same point.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

the imaging part of the job seems to be ok - so first of all try to start the VM. If it is coming from a machine with Intel-chipset maybe it already boots.

If not - configure it again - no need to image it a second time.

Thanks. After changing the BIOS on my computer to allow the use of VT (Virtual Technology) and working out that VMware Player needs to run as Administrator on Windows Vista I was able to get the VM to begin to power up, however it doesn't get very far and then stops with the following error:

Unfortunately my computer did not come with the Windows Vista CD as it has a Recovery Partition, so if anyone has any ideas on how to workaround this I'd be grateful.

If I try to use Converter to Configure the machine, I get the message "Reconfiguration is not supported for the selected source".

I ran the Recovery Disc and chose the "Startup Repair" option and this ran but reported it was unable to fix the problem:

While I had the Recovery Disc running I used the "Command Prompt" option to see if the "\Windows\System32\winload.exe" file actually existed, and to my surprise the whole "Windows" directory was missing along with a couple of others:

The following is the same from the live system, and I've highlighted the missing directories:

So my conclusion is, the P2V process for some reason failed to copy all of the directories and that this VM will never run.

The only thing I can think of trying next would be to do a backup of my live system and then use this via the Recovery Disc Restore option to restore the files back onto the C:\ drive.

If anyone has any other ideas I'd love to hear them.

OK so I have resolved all of my problems and have successfully created a virtual machine from my physical machine and have it running.

The first hurdle I overcame was with the issues above by getting the conversion to actually complete at 100% without any errors. The reason this was failing was because I was telling the conversion process to create a virtual disk of 250GB and not leaving it to be the default which is the same size as the original. I was doing this because I know I don't have enough room for the virtual disk to grow beyond 250GB.


I think this is probably a bug.


Once I got this working though, I then encountered a Blue Screen on booting with the stop error 0x0000007B, for which there appear to be many articles on how to resolve but none seemed to work. As they all pointed to the issue related to the SCSI disk driver being used, I decide to re-create my image and purposefully select to use the SCSI driver for the disk rather than leave it as the default which is to be the same as the host. My host's default is IDE. After doing this, everything worked.


So in summary to get a working Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit virtual machine from the physical machine, this is what I recommend doing:


1) Turn off UAC


2) Disable Anti-Virus and any other system tray applications


3) Run converter and make sure you:


a) Do not change the default size of your disk partitions
b) Purposefully select to use SCSI as the disk driver

Hopefully by doing this you will get a success.
