Good morning gurus/VM-masters :)

I'm still a novice to the VM world :3

The setup:

Dell PowerEdge 2900 running VMware ESX Server 3i 3.5.0 build-153875
Two hard drives setup in RAID 1
Only one datastore living in RAID1

The question:

I have an extra hard drive that I want to add. http://Cheetah 15K.6, SAS (Serial Attached SCSI)
I was wondering if it where possible to add the extra hard drive and create a new datastore to add new VMs on it?
Will ESX recognize it as additional storage?
Will it hurt/mess with the existing RAID1 configuration?
Or is it straight-forward, plug-in the HD
Thank you!

Hi,

Yes you can add the disk as a raid0 LUN and it will be available to use as a VMFS store.

SAS is safe to hot plug and scan, however the raid controller may require a Raid0 def in the firmware nvram. It will not harm the existing store if you plug it in.

Regards,

Mike

Raid 0 - a non fault tolerance disk definition, in this case a single spindle.

Many advandced raid capable controllers force you to define the disk as an availble device on the controller before the operating system can see it, in this case one disk would yield a raid 0 defined LUN on the controller.

Your controller will either accept it as presented or you need to bring the hardware down to define it. Sometimes this capability is availble over an ILOM (Integrated Light Out Manager) interface of the server allowing the definition without an outtage.
