Issue reported - Heartbeat alert. Found vmware tool not installed on one domain controller.

Currently, the system is boot to normal mode but administrator cannot login to the server. The client workstation can access the services and files on this domain controller.

After installing vmware tools, this issue occurred. " "Time Difference Exists between the Client and the Server, unable to log on". This virtual machine is running windows 2000 which has all the 5 FSMO Roles on ESX 2.5. It is also running other services such as DHCP, DNS act as file server.

Do note that prior installing this vmware tool, customer have reboot the server last week and there is no issue. The execution of vmware tools was installed yesterday.

Action Taken

  • Reboot the server to Safe Mode with Networking; verify that the time is same as the any other client. From the safe mode, you can login to the server

  • If login to the normal mode, the error appear " "Time Difference Exists between the Client and the Server, unable to log on"

  • Boot the server from "Restore Active Directory Mode" and uninstall the VM tool, reboot the server and able to login but the network card driver has been uninstall.

  • After uninstall the VM tool, the network driver has been remove as well, Install only the Network card driver again from the VM tool, after reboot the problem still occur again

Hi,

Is this the only domain controller?

You should setup an external time service or source that all servers and clients sync to. e.g. 0.pool.ntp.org.

Do not sync the DC time to the esx hosts time with VMtools unless it also used the same time source.

If it is set to sync with your esx host then change it back and manually set the time correctly on the DCs console, then fix your time sources.

Regards,

Mike
