Is anyone using an Hitachi AMS in the VMware environment? Just wondering what your experiences have been with the unit -- performance, reliability, service.

Thanks!

if it is using HBAs and FC it should be OK

if you are going to use iSCSI (with HNAS, wich is a Bluearc), then you should carefully evaluate your design

I once worked with an AMS 1000, with iSCSI, so I know what the facts are about it, the box seems to be OK, but the access (iSCSI) not ready to go

you should not have any problems with it

just validate that all components are on the hardware compatibility list

The AMS2300 (and similar) are a vastly different design than the AMS1000 you worked with.....

I've heard very good thigns about this array.

We are using AMS2100 units (essentially the same but lower spec) with FC, at prod and DR sites with TrueCopy replication. I am happy with the product and the performance - there were a few gotchas with Host Group configuration for VMware, but HDS were able to provide documents "AMS 2000 VMware Best Practise" and "AMS 2000 Host Installation Guide for VMware". I'm probably not supposed to distribute these so I won't attach here, but ask your HDS representative if you can't find them on the web.

Hitachi Data Systems recommends creating host groups per HBA port (that is, per WWPN).

Host Group Config: One host group per HBA (HBA port)
Advantages: Allows boot from SAN. Better flexibility. Changes to the host group affect only one host. Better troubleshooting possibilities and log analysis.
Disadvantages: More host groups to be created and maintained.

Host Group Config: One host group per ESX hosts or VMware cluster
Advantages: Fewer host groups to be created and maintained.
Disadvantages: Does not allow ESX hosts to boot from SAN.Less flexibility (for example, an additional LU cannot be presented to only one ESX host). Changes to the host group might affect all hosts.

We purchased new units recently and all the firmware was up to date. The only downtime was licence installation (there are 3 licences which require reboots when installed).

We have a good relationship with the local service guys, emails are always quickly answered and onsite support is prompt. The Department I indirectly work for has a fair bit of HDS kit so there is an existing enterprise support agreement - can't comment on what the standard support would be like if, for example, a single AMS unit was the only infrastructure purchased from them.
