It looks like it's some problem when Player is started and tries to retrieve information about the host's serial ports but somehow ends up with malformed string data. (Is there anything unusual about your host hardware, particularly with regard to serial ports?)

Could you run regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\SERIALCOMM, export the tree as a .reg file, and attach that?
